MDI Final Calls 2005

Hi Guys,

I have been going through this thread and felt that a lot of freshers are having problems in evaluating their decision to join MDI on grounds of three aspects which are:

1. How genuine is the salary of 8.3 lacs quoted by MDI
2. Lot many people have multiple calls from institutes like MDI, SPJain, NITIE, FMS and offcourse IIMs( which you will have later)
3. How is MDI in Finance ( Faculty, Subject and Placements)

Taking each issue one by one, I think Prakash (Bingo) has already cleared most of doubts as far as salary of 8.3 lacs is concerned. To highlist one person's comment that he went through site of IIM I and figured that they had amazing placements. Dude, if you just happen to go through our placement report and that of IIM Indore, you will find they don't have any company except one i guess, which we didn't have on our campus for placement. Infact their average quoted is also almost equal to ours.

Second, I will talk about Finance at MDI, as pointed out by Mr. President that MDI is known for marketing and not that good for finance, i'll request him to come to MDI personally like he did at SPJain and then talk about it. Guys, frankly speaking our finance faculty rocks. We have around 14 core faculties in our finance and Economics department, which is a dream of most of the institutes and in this you have prof. like Sanjay Bakshi (www.sanjbak.com), Bappa, Bhusnurmath, TP Ghosh and Tarun Chaturvedi who are recognized across school and very well in the industry . so there should not be any glitch regarding finance faculty here. Second, here at MDI we have all finance course which you will get at the IIMs barring one that is on corporate restructuring but to cover that we have Behavioural Finance which is not taught at any B School in the country and at only selected B Schools abroad. So the last one left is Fiance Placements - I do agree we didn't have many I Banks coming here for recruitement but you need to discout two factors for it. First, we don't accept DIFFERNTAILS and second we are comparitively recent institute. By the time your batch passes out from this place you will see all big names here too.

Last left is about the various call which you people have. For this i will just say evaluate your options well on various grounds like:
1.Faculty
2.How institute has grown over the last 3 - 4 years
3.Industry Interaction
4.Options (Whether a insti is just good for operations, finance or its good for all so you just have all options)
5.Opportunites ( Live Projects, Student's Exchange, Good Summers and a lot softer ones)
6 Last n the least Placements (Offcourse i m kidding)

So on the basis of all these evaluate your choices and if possible go and visit the campuses if you can.

people who are coming with work Experience, don't worry you can easily switch from IT to Fincane and if you want to be in IT only then you can expect amazing laterals too. so don't worry and make your decisions well as this is one in a life decision

All the Best
Ashish

Hi Ashish,

Thanx for the info ! It's helped dispel a lotta doubts. I too went thru the IIM I site and found the avg sal to be around 8.16 lakhs or so

Hey, you were talkin abt IT laterals- cud you provide some more details on that ??? As in, a little more on the profile etc needed. As of now, I am looking towards continuing in IT and some more info on the MDI placements in IT would be very helpful.

hi all,
I have sent my DD aong with the covering letter. However I have not written my Test regd number behind the DD, but have mentioned it in the covering letter. Is there going to be any problem in this case?

Can someone help?

Thanks,

Hi All,

Can you let me the exact procedure for procuring the loan. Do I need to come to Gurgaon personally ... or is it possible that I can get it done from one of the SBI's in mumbai?
Also if I have to come .... what are the documents that are needed. Is it only the college admission offer letter, or we need some other documents (from college & elsewhere). If yes, when will the college provide those document.

Plz reply ASAP.

Thanks,

Hi Prateek....

If you want to take the Scholars' loan (and I think that's the one with the lowest interest rates and the least paperwork) Then you would have to take it from SBI Gurgaon... there are no two ways about it. If you want to take the loan from any other place you would have to take the normal educational loans which charge higher interests and involve more processing time.

but I don't think you need to really come down to Gurgaon .. at least not yet ... A friend of mine just got through SP and they have the same offer too and need to get the loan a lot faster as their last dates are that much closer .. and when she got in touch with the bank mamager of SBI Mumbai about the loan this is what he had to say :

a) You got to take this loan from the branch that sent you the letter (in our case gurgaon)
b)you can send the documents (admission letter, permanent address propf and statement of expenses) along with details about how much you are applying for and send it across

They will get back to you really fast.

At the end of all the processing when the loan gets sanctioned you do need to go there personally however to sign the contract.

I had gone down to Gurgaon to submit the 20K and paid a visit to the SBI branch and the guys there also said the excat same things together with the fact that they will finally give you a bank draft in the institute's name before the stipulated dates and then you can go deposit it whereever required.

So the sensible thing to do at the moment .. call the branch up and send them the documents. Shouln't be a problem at all.

Hope I have been of some help

Hi Jyotiraj,
Thanks a lot. This means .. that the first step I need to take ... is to call up SBI Gurgaon.
Hey you r from where?
One thing .... Now consider that one has taken the loan. Does one need to go back for the 55K DD to pay the fee.
Thanks again for your input.

You cannot get choice of room or room partner in first year... the rooms are pre-alloted even b4 u come to hostel....

You are expected to reach one day before 24th (i reached on 23rd) ... though u can reach on 24th also (half of my batch came on 23rd & rest on 24th)... dunno about abyone who came b4 that!!!

the rooms are on twin sharing basis & there is nothing like FCFS!!

Prateek

Thankx prateek...

Hi guys, Please reffer to post no.615 .

It's very urgent. And a matter of my life and death. Please Mandevians , Help!!!!!!

Please reply.

Hi guys,
I got thru MDI-HR.
I'm posting a bit late but my computer ws having sum problem.
Actually i wnt to no wat r the oppurtunities for an HR manager. Me really intereested in doing business in the future .but if i go for an MBA-HR degree, how will that help me in my business. Moreover, I'm actually intereested in Finance stream. So what shud i do? Please help.
The other option i hv is IRMA. Plz reply.

Well, IRMA is Rural Management, assuming you are not intertested in that (it sure as hell won't help you in your business), go for MDI-HR.

Now, the first year @ MDI is common for both the PGP-M and PGP-HR people, so you would be getting a healthy mix of all functional areas, finance, marketing, systems, HR etc. In the second year, you'll predominantly be doing HR related courses, but you can take up electives related to finance if you want (pl confirm this from the prospectus, I'm not very sure).

As to how HR will help you in your business, well, it'll impart you with certain people skills, and as we all know, most of business today is about dealing with people. Again, one can't quantify how much it'll help, but my view is it will.
I think some senior doing PGP-HR would be better able to answer this question.

In the end, it's your decision, your life. Do your research, and believe in your decsion before you make it. No point regretting it later.

PS: It would've been more helpful if you'd have posted your profile as well.

To add to that, since HR people take up all the courses in the first year, they have a mix of all specialisations.. What you can do is that find tht weather the HR people can go for another minor specialisation.. cause I heard that in XLRI. the PMIR people can apply for placements in other sectors as well.. maybe they let you do that at MDI-HR too

Well, I think they should be able to do a minor specialisation in some other functional area.

As far as placements go, I think he won't be too interested in that since he ultimately wants to run his own business.

But even in XLRI. even if one can appear for placements in other functional areas, won't the skill set that the person has matter? And wouldn't a finance major be preferred in an I-Bank over a PM-IR major??

hi all,

I have 2yrs work ex in IT industry..desperate to get out ...want to switch to finance...not sure if i am running away from IT challenge..and not sure what finance has in store... but i talked to some MDI guys .. and the feedback i received was that major IT companies that come are TCS,infy, wipro, patni ,IBM ,HP ...(cognizant/csc/eds do not come). Also they pay freshers about 5.5lakh (training costs..excluded..i m not challenging the 8.3 figure...:) )and for every year of work-ex approx. we can add 50-60 thousand per year more..

the profile given is usually business analysis and not project management (thank god!) .. and the in hand cash is about 35- 40k. (pls correct if wrong)

I am getting 27k in hand now..and after my next appraisal in june..i m confident of getting more than 30k in hand plus an onsite visit in the pipeline.. I think that from salary point of view MDI might not be a vlaue addition...but then on second thought i feel that pay package is not the end of the world and there is lot more value addition from a MBA than just final placement...

So I have made that draft and decided to deposit it on 28th.:)

about switching to finance..i think that my 2 yrs work ex in IT goes down the drain (common sense logic..) ...and the profile that finance companies offer are
1) retail banking
2) coporate finance
3) equity research.

I am interested in equity research..(after some cash i made in the recent IPOs!!)..and the companies that offer this profile at MDI are Deutsche bank,SBI caps,ICIC,UTI bank..I am told that these PSU banks offer about 4.5 - 5lakh to freshers..but 2yrs work ex in these companies u can switch to I-banks..which dont come to MDI.

also consulting companies dont visit MDI. I would like MDI seniors to correct me if I have got any wrong info..also do give more info on IT job profile offered in the 2005 placement.
Also any feedback on equity research job profile..

I hope i m not posting on the wrong thread.

thanks in advance.

I understand what is going through your mind at this point - and its quite understandable.

But wont it be better to first think on the following lines:
1. Do you want to do an MBA this year & whether you hold it above a lucrative onsite opp?
2. Is MDI your kind of institute - and you wouldnt regret joining it?

Finally, about specialisations & placements. Well, for specialisations - I can say that a ot of our myths and pre-conceptions are broken once we are in it - so I guess hang on till then & MDI gives you that chance; so I am pretty sure when the time comes you will be wiser & will make the best choice. With regards to placements - well this is a boom time & the placements have been good, so I wouldnt suggest making any decision keeping this year in mind - instead get a feel of what you want to do and see if MDI helps you getting there in all possible scenarios & keep some flexibility on your end also.

I guess that should help somewhat. Honestly, I followed the above approach in deciding for myself - so its NOT hot air.

Anyway - all the very best to you.

Hello sir,

I am having same profile like u.... am having 20 months of work exp as of now and i have already denied the 3 years onsite trip.... and on top of that informed my boss about my resignation on the day of my annual apprasial....
of cousrse my salary is less than urs buddy....
This all becos

1. Onsite trip is like a carrot that all IT companies use.... why u should just flush the idea out of ur mind is....
1.1 That u will definitely get after u do ur MBA... that too in the line that u want rather
than the line which u want to get out of (like me)
1.2 Just see the placement scene across board man.... @ IIM A atleast 10 ppl opted for indian jobs not only becos desh ki dharti but becos of better job profile, India is going to be hub of everything (has already began), and of course man u work for ur country... so i have already removed this onsite bug from my mind .... its upto u know....

2. Regarding consulting jobs... see dont know abt dude.... but i luv the IT industry only thing is i want to move to consulting area as compared to present delivery line... for this as of now i am planning to have a combo of IT and marketing as my specialization... so if u are talking abt this consulting... u have E&Y;, PWC, Ramco, Infy, Barcklays etc....

hope it helps...

Mohit
