Let me know of questions that I can answer.

Hi Trotamundo,

I am peruvian too and I will apply to Ivey for the fall 2009 mba session. As a matter of fact I will be visiting the school in october in order to meet Niki Healey (had a previous interview with her in Lima 2007 at the MBA tour), some teachers and be able to "live" one class day visit.

I have read you can apply for this day visit and that your expenses are remboursables, that entails air tickets, transports and accomodation up to 1200 dollars. Is this right? have you heard about it? Besides this, does Ivey focus that much as US or some canadian BS do on the GMAT Score? What do you think?

Gracias,

Lukacsdepereny

Now, this is what I call a response! Dear Demandez, thx for sharing with us your extensive and useful info. It is very comprehensive and covers most of the material found about Ivey in the web.

My interest for Ivey began in 2007. Since then Ive been building up my career and will apply for entry next year. In fact Ill be taking the GMAT in November and cross my fingers to score at least 550. I am pretty confident about other parts of my profile; with humility but confidence I know it is unique and strong and hopefully it will compensate any potential GMAT failure. Lets see how it goes.

Congratulations on your admission to the program and I look forward to exchange more posts with you and other members in the future.

Godspeed

Habla Varon, as per your request here is the relevant link. You are right, travel awards for intl. students amount CAN$1,200 and are aimed at covering travel expenses (air ticket, accomodation, etc.) There is certain criteria to be met by applicants in order to be awarded. However I find Iveys info quite clear; if you are a competitive applicant you can expect some money back into your account.

Regarding the GMAT, Ivey does consider this test as an important factor for admission. Unless other parts of your application are very strong, a low GMAT (

Thank u caxola. I have a very weird but interesting backround: studied in Chile Hotel Management 1997 - 2001 (double degree, 1st place in both, GPA 5,85/7,00); direct admission to study in Toulouse France Licence 2001-2002(12,05/20) + Maitrise 2002- 2003 (13,61/20), trilingual (spa, fre , eng (ielts ac 7) Internships in Santiago, Chile; Easter Island, Chile; Lima, Peru; La Paz, Bolivia.

I work for a French Worldwide Facilities Management company in Peru; job exp 5 years (Im 30) 2004 as Head of Catering on the biggest gold mine in Latin America (cajamarca, peru, remote site facilities 1800 residents providing catering services, 85 workers of my resp.); 2005 as Head of Operations in Patagonia and in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina) providing catering and hostelry services for an important Argentinean oil & gas company (extreme weather conditions, 40 workers); 2005 Project Consultant for catering & hostelry services for Perus biggest Oil Refinery (Lima, Peru); 2006 Lecturer, Faculty of Hotel Management in a Peruvian University; 2006 - up to date Head of Operations in Perus 5th worldwide copper supplying mine in Ancash , Peru, (in charge of catering, hostelry, leisure and maintenance services for 2,800 residents, resp for 380 workers)

Planing to apply for a scholarship into a short term program (certificate) in Asia between feb-mar 2009. Two nationalities: Peru + Hungary & Canada (Permanent Resident)
Co-owner of a small creole retaurant in a low income district in Lima Peru; volunteer of a social program providing free catering services for 1200 poor peasant families; guitar player (self learning)

I believe that for a Peruvian its a well rounded resume due to the fact that most peruvian candidates have not got that much international experience which might give me a slight advantage. That was why I was asking about the importance of the GMAT cause I havent got too much time to study, I believe that with a 580 I could be admitted. I know a spanish journalist who entered with 480 gmat in CAMBRIDGE!!!.

Best regards,

Lukacsdepereny

Earlier, I didnt realize that you were the Peruvian Guru (Vajk, if I rightly remember your name). Id been through your previous threads and you have an incredible profile. Am sure you would crack your GMAT, either. Wish you good luck.

Sure, that would be my pleasure.

We both peruvian brothers (Trotamundo & me) are planning to go to Ivey too but perhaps on defered sessions (may - sep).

Great school, great know-how, excellent Post MBA hiring rates, salary and international gained prestidge.

I believe most Canadian schools benefit from these concepts.

Best 4 u,

Lukacsdepereny

Guys, since you both are preparing for GMAT, thought I must pitch in with the following the reference archives that I created whilst preparing for my GMAT.

1. The Communique - A collection of usage related pointers

2. The Sums - A collection of arithmetic concepts for competitive examinations

You might find these useful.

Dear Demandez, thx for sharing those notes. For sure they will help in our GMAT quest. Just PMd you my contact details. Take care!

Hi,

I am evaluating IVEY MBA for the May 2009 intake. My profile is 730 / 5y / Project Manager + Business Development in ERP.

Post-MBA, I will be looking at Rotational leadership position in Technology / Telecommunication Industry. Ivey MBA program pretty much fits in my scheme of thing.

However, I am not really job market in Canada and especially, opportunities in the programs that I am interested in. Can someone point me towards some statics based on your research or first hand experiences?

Good to understand that you are interested in Ivey.
I have not much idea about telecom industry job prospects for Ivey grads, however, I do understand that you cannot go wrong by choosing to attend Ivey, given its quality curriculum and comprehensive alumni network. You might want to check Adventures in B-School (MBA), blogged by a fulltime Ivey MBA student who aspires to pursue a career in telecom industry, in capacity of general management.

Good luck on your applications.

Yeah Jai, Ive been admitted for the May 2009 cohort.
Fall 2009 admissions cycle has already begun. Refer to the Ivey Admissions website for exact dates.

Certainly, one cant go wrong by choosing Ivey, at least for the comprehensive success of its alumni. Refer to my post on why Ivey. However, you might want to consider the following:

1. Case Method Theres no doubt that case method along with the cross enterprise curriculum will expose you to a wide array of management problems, interpreting the eagles eye view. However, some students are better off at a lecture-based method, where you tend to learn more by listening in class and burning back home assignments. I am more of a learn by doing kind of a guy and I would strongly advocate the case method. But thats just me; choose the method that you believe is right for you.

2. Financing Canadian banks dont lend internationals that are not landed immigrants (i.e. those who dont hold the permanent resident-ship status). Indian banks offer upto 20lakhs. You would easily need another 20-25 lakhs to finance the Ivey MBA.

3. Ivey is a fast paced programme. Unlike other 2-year programs, at Ivey you will have very little time decide on post MBA careers. I understand that job fairs and interview season starts as early as 4 months into the programme. But this is the case with any top 1-year MBA programme.

Unquestionably, Ivey is a top-school. Following links might be of some help to you.

Deep, I think TOEFL waivers are considered on a case-by-case basis. I remember the text-field in online online application form where you get to send requests to waive the requirement. Try sending an email to the MBA Admissions office. Response turnarounds are reasonably quick.

Demandez,
I am interested in Ivey as well, for the May '09 cohort. Read through your wonderful posts and helpful links.
Question: Did you defer your admission from previous year to the May 2009 cohort? First deadline for May '09 appears to be Sep' 01. If you applied this year, when did you apply and when did you get the final decision?

I was planning on completing my appliaction by Sep' 01 until I came across the post by Ms.Niki Healey on Ivey Admissions blog;
I am yet to finalize my essays; I believe that I have a strong profile, but want to be completely confident with my essays before I hit the submit button. I understand that Ivey has rolling admissions, and so if I submit by Sep' 15, the AdCom would consider my app. earlier than the Nov. 6 deadline application, right?
Also, planning to be a part of the 'First Class on Road' in September.

Hello Kishore.
Yes, I have a deferred admission from previous year. Id applied to the class that starts Sep 2008. However, Ivey advised me to start in May 2009 for the following two reasons:

  1. I might find things tough to find my dream job post MBA, with just 3 years of experience. Ivey believes that an additional 10 months of experience would put me in par with the class whose average work-ex is more than 5.
  2. I indicated management consulting as my short-term career goal, post Ivey MBA. Technically, theres no difference between both the cohorts (Spring/Fall); the curriculum for both is the same. But the recruiting cycles of major consulting firms and investment banks are strategically aligned with the May cohort (most 2-year MBAs graduate in April/May). Refer to Ivey Admissions Facebook page FAQ.

As far as I understand, Iveys admissions deadlines are not strict. They review applications on a rolling basis, as and when they are received. But they do recommend candidates to apply early, to be considered for available scholarship opportunities. I think these deadlines are only meant to furnish their waitlist policies and decisions. (You may want to email the admissions office to check on this)

Agreed, its best to complete your application yearly. But dont do so if you are not completely confident. Am sure First Class on the Road will provide you better insights about the school. But since you are at New York, I would strongly urge you to visit the school, if possible. Ivey does offer class visit awards to prospective students. Refer to Richard Ivey School of Business - MBA program for details.

Class Visit Dates for 2008:
  1. Thursday, September 25, 2008
  2. Thursday, October 30, 2008
  3. Thursday, November 20, 2008
