Information about IBM Global Services.

hi anuj,

i have read in one of ur other threads that u're from dce..me also from dce..i'm a little confused asto how u got IBM GS as well as TCS through DCE..as both r supposed to be group B companies..

chalo that's not imp..i'm also placed in IBM GS..i really would like to know where more opportunities in terms of growth r..bangalore or gurgaon..i don't want to give cat as mngmt is not my cup of tea..i want to go into software itself and i believe there r ample growth opportunities in IBM GS..so plz advice which is better..delhi or bangalore..

also is there a jump possible from IBM GS to IBM software labs somewhere down the line??

regards,
Megawhiz

Ok Lets break that into two parts

Gurgaon or Bangalore : Pls PM ajain for detailed analysis i am a non techie at IBM.I seriously doubt if you will get bangalore as your destination unless you are joining in the may 23rd batch of eltps ( IBM lingo for freshers). You will probably end up in pune doing unix CC++ stuff.

ISL?IGSi : i do not know any IGS guys joning ISL atleast from the tech side i was the only guy to do it in 2004 (did 6 mts in ISL before coming back to IGS) but i am a content developer ( Corp comm stuff) so it was a breeze.

ISL requires High intellect/excellent skills in a narrow domain and Poor commuication skills .It is a less taxing place to work.

Ps: have left IBM after 2 years in various ops/pre sales roles.

It IS possible to get to IBM_SL from IBM_AMS - both within IGSI - provided you have good tech skills and your manager is helpful. He/She can make sure you get interviewed atleast by the ISL tech folks and get a release from ur current project. If you do well, getting a transfer is a breeze.

ISL does not require poor commn skills, thats a mischievous statement to make(thats why the I guess). The point being made is that you can manage in ISL without good commn skills. That is because most projects are in-house and there is limited or no client interaction. If you are the go-getter communicative types, AMS may be a better choice for u.

Ow..come on chief,

I for one do not know any manager willing to release resources for other AMS projects unless utilization drops below 60.Its a joke to expect them to release someone who actually cleared the IBM_SL interview.

That you can is only on paper. But yes there are a few ISL people moving over to AMS of late as ISL has excess domain experts in heathcare area who are moving to AMS for better growth opportunities.

On the poor communication skills yes ,the meaning implied is that it is not essential for sucess ,only good domain/functional knowledge is a pre requisite

One guy I just abt know(hi-bye types) actually managed to go from IBM_AMS to IBM_SL. Ofcourse, he had to fight the good fight and screw everyone's happiness in the process From IBM_SL to IBM_AMS, there were atleast 4 ppl in my team who came that way. Now I have resigned and am sitting at home, but not a lot could have changed in the last two weeks. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Off to IMT, eh? Best of luck, buddy!

hi,

plz correct me if i'm wrong..what i gather from ur post is that IBM SL and IBM AMS r both a part of IBM GS and IBM GS as a separate entity doesn't exist..which means that ppl like us who've been recuited from campus in IBM GS may either land up win IBM SL or IBM AMS?? or is IBM GS completely different from the other 2..SL and AMS??

till now i used to believe that IBM is divided into 3 sub companies(i couldn't find any other word)..IBM GS - which has work similar to Infy, TCS; IBM SL - which does more sophisticated work including some R&D; and IBM AMS which i don't know a lot about..

Plz comment!!

OK,
This might give you some clarity.

Post merger there is only one IBM organisation IBM Global Services India. This includes both IBM Domestic and Export businesses.

There are 2 organisaions under this

1) IBM Domestic: This organisation deals with the domestic market essentially sales and mkg types. They are either consulting or selling hardware to indian corporates.

The SBUs under this umbrella are
a)BCS : Business Consulting services : The management & IT consultants
b) S&D; : Esentially to sell hardware
c)SWG : Essentially to sell software
d) IGS Dom : Go to market types for domestic ousourcing engagements like Bharti etc

The Export organisaion has 5 sub units/While all these are integrated under one Mr Mats Agervi (VP Global delivery India) they report to their masters (Vertical heads ) in USA/Japan. The units are

1) AMS : Software development and maintainence
2) ISL : Software Products development
3)BTO : The IBM BPO and call Centre
4) ITS : Providing infrastructure support etc
5) IRL : Research work etc

IBM in campus comes and recruits under 2 heads

AMS : They pay 2.5 lacs and start you as an Programmer
ISL : pay close to 3 and start you as a Sw designer

both the organisations are different in nature as is the work.AMS i more demanding more quantitative and high pressure.ISl is extremely intelecctual and Qualitative and not very demanding.
On the long run growth both in salary and responsibilities are the same.

Hi Arvind,
No this year they have put in differential pay for ISL >for 2004 it was 2.5 +25K for AMS and a straight 2.75 for ISL. This year they have openly begun new slabs , they r holfding a separate interveiw in select campuses where they travel with AMS panel etc.( new initiatives under mr Harish grama)

hi harish,

i forgot to thank u on that excellent post which helped me clarify all my doubts..thanks..

BTW..my pay package is 2.5 lacs+25k for housing which makes me believe that I'm in IBM AMS!!

neways best of luck for all ur future endeavours..

Hey megawhiz,

They will ask you for the preferred destination . but then will post you where there are current requirement .Dont worry all the cities IBM is in are happeneing.
Guys!
I'm from NIT, Surat. Just got placed last week. These are some of the queries me and my friends have regarding 'our' company:
1.) When the recruitment team had come to our campus we were told our pay packet shall be somewhere on the higher side of 2.5? Any ideas, anybody? Btw what was the offer last year?
2.) I had informally spoken with one of the recruiters, and she had said IBM shall be recruiting somewhere around 600-800 freshers this year. How realistic is this figure? What was it last year? What all colleges do they cover? I hope this ain't a bulk recruiting company like CTS, TCS etc.
3.) I'm most confused about this one, please rank the office locations. Is pune all that screwy? And bangs all that cool?

Vikas

Vikas! Congrats on getting into IBM! Pls find my answers below:
1. The CTC being offered will depend on the college they visit, how past folks from there have contributed in IBM and host of other issues. This is a standard practice for most companies. However differnece won't be much. Hence all I can say is for a fresher at IBM, 2.5-2.7LPA is what is NORMALLY offered.

2. Well 600-800 is quite probable. IBM is expanding very fast. It added around 5000-6000 employess this year alone. Also there is a new Dev centre at Hyderbad coming up. Hence it is quite probable. The number of recuritments this year would definitely be larger than last year but as such no official figures would be available. IBM is brand consicious and they pick & choose the colleges they visit. Typically all top engineering & mgmt colleges in the country are visited by them.

3. I have worked both in Pune and Bangalore branch. There is no way you can RANK these dev centers c'os each one handles different set of clients. Facilities/work wise all the centers are equal, all are inside city and all follow same set of rules. But remember that Bangalore is the biggest of all centers with 5-6 branches across the city. And typically all the biggies (GM, Director etc) are at Bangalore while regional heads would be at different cities.

Praveen

Thanks Praveen!
I am a chem engg student,(and pretty good one at that). We at NIT surat have been allowed dual placements this year, just to give the more 'core' students the chance to have their peace of mind. I sat for IBM GS, the second company on campus and cleared it. (the first one, TCS didn't allow chemies). after that i've left infy, wipro, cts, kanbay, geometrics, and a few more. As of now I don't plan to sit for anyother company in zero phase. should i consider sitting for any chem companies next sem, given that i shall be givin CAT2005?

ok would want to butt in.This is simply a case of interest. A lot of IIT and REC grads are of the opinion that they r prostituting themselves joining an IT company. Nothing could be further from the truth. An It job gives you a way bigger perspective than any core companies do , you mingle with brighter professionals, build cross cultural relationships ( across the 7 seas) and learn a lot more before going in for an MBA. you r not in awe of big men you get a great life in a happening city.

I was in conversation with a prof from IIT Kanpur who told me proudly that he did not speak to any of his studens who took up an IT job.My reply : This is excactly the attitude that is keeping a bright man like you stuck in kanpur and not in the thick of action.

Further on the cat issue.Pls concentrate on your cat now that placement is not a concern.
Best of luck.
