MT HR Interview Experience - 08.00 AM, 2.12.2013

Venue :
Technical Training Institute, HAL, Bangalore

A few things i learned from my travel to the TTI before i go on to the interview:

1. Bus number 335E from majestic goes to the main HAL gate and we can easily walk from there to HMA and TTI. Please do check the bus timings and frequency of the bus and plan your travel!

2. If you plan to take a room and refresh, i'd strongly suggest not to choose to stay anywhere closer to HAL as there are no lodges or hotels close by. Staying near majestic would be wiser as we can get buses to HAL and also be closer to the KempGowda Bus stand and the railway station.

3. If the autowalas know that we are not from bengaluru, they'd rip us off
(pretty much like our very own Chennai). So, If you really wanna travel in much more comfort than a Volvo bus, i'd suggest to take a cab if you can afford that kinda money. ( Way better than to spend on auto)

DOCUMENT VERIFICATION:

1. This process is quite a pain in the wrong place! Since ours was the first day, things started only after 9 AM and the verifying officers were also not quite sure of what they were supposed to do.
A few things that can help you have a smoother document verification process:

1. Please ensure that you have filled the check list and the annexures completely well in advance.

2. Please ensure that you have self-attested all the photocopies.

3. Please ensure that the year-wise percentage of marks have been calculated properly. If it varies from what we had given in the bio-data form when we had applied, they ask us to write a letter to confirm the corrected marks are the right marks! (Duh!)

4.Please ensure that you have your photocopies and your originals arranged in the order mentioned in the check list.

5. Please ensure that your community certificate is valid, that is, OBC certificate's validity is 6 months and the SC/ST certificates are valid for 10 years. They also take time to manually search the name of your caste in a book book of castes!

6. Please ensure that your percentage includes all subjects of all semesters of all years including languages.

7. If your University/College follows CGPA pattern, and if you have the conversion formula on the back of your mark sheets, they you are safe. Else, they ask for a letter from the university/college for the conversion. Also, please do keep a copy of the back side of the marksheet which has the conversion.

8. This one is only for MBA students. If your degree certificate or mark sheets do not indicate your specialization as HR or Marketing or HR & Marketing in case of a dual specialization, they ask for a letter from the University/College for this too. If you already have it, well and good. Else, they take an undertaking from you that you'd submit such a letter upon selection.

Overall experience of the document verification : TIRING, PAINFUL and CUMBERSOME!
They fail to understand one common thing- all college affiliated to all universities in all states in India DO NOT function or work the same way! At least, the people working in recruitment should be aware of the differences n different states.

INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE:

I was the third person to attend the interview. My interview started at 11.20 AM and ended at 11.30 AM!

* Since, there are very few HR aspirants here, i am not going to post the HR questions. I will just post the general questions and my overall experience.

1. The panel consisted of FIVE people- 4 gentlemen and a lady, all in their 50's, including the General Manager- HR! They were quite domineering and intimidating - or so i felt! From the very beginning, the interview felt more like they wanted to eliminate me somehow and not want to select me!!

2. The first question was obviously " Tell us about yourself"! I screwed up big time! I had not prepared anything as such and thought i would say things spontaneously!!

TIP : Please prepare at least a sequence of what you are going to say! And also, try to highlight your achievements and things that can impress the panel! Trust me people, i have worked in HR and interviewed people- This first question can make or break any interview!! It turned out to be a disaster for me!

3.Since i quit my job with a IT major and wanted to join a PSU, my second question was, " Why PSU? what is so great about PSUs?"
Again i screwed up or my answer was not convincing for the panel!

TIP : For guys who are currently working or who want to work only with a PSU, please do prepare a really convincing answer for this guys! Job Stability, Job security, work-life balance, job satisfaction, etc. and such fancy HR terms always do not work well with them! And it is always better to agree with the panel - whatever they say!

4. My next questions were " why did you choose engineering?", " why did you shift to HR from engineering?" and "Why HR"! I can tell you guys that they were not at all satisfied with any of my answers because all of them shook their heads in disapproval and disappointment!

5. Regarding technical, i did invite trouble myself! They asked me to name a few subjects and asked me the subjects that i was comfortable with. But i did not prepare that well and could answer their questions well.

The panel was very disappointed as i could not answer much questions. They kept looking at one another and asked the other person to ask questions, but they were all like "isse kya poonchoon bhai! yeh toh bhilkul naalayak bekaar hai"!! That is the reason the interview lasted only 10 minutes!

I was quite confident that they would ask me basic questions and would mostly ask questions about my work experience and did not prepare that well! Well, i guess i deserve to have had such a pathetic interview!

My Sincere suggestion:
1. Do not assume that questions would be from subjects or projects or work experience. Please be prepared for everything and anything.
2. Be confident and audible and never disagree with them.
3. Make the best first impression and try to drive the interview well from there!

Verdict : We get a gut feeling after we write an exam or give an interview right! And my gut feeling right after those ten minutes says that i am TOTALLY OUT OF THE RACE! There is no way they would have given any positive marks for my pathetic performance!!! I guess i deserve to lose for my slight over-confidence and lethargy!! 😠embarrasedembarrased😟😟

End Note: It was a great journey with you all guys! But, i dont think i can travel any further in this forum! I am not in a position to type more as i just entered home from Bangalore and wanted to post this right away! I am not abel to take names now! Thanks to each and everyone who helped in some way from my preparation and everything in HAL and for all those who made the journey this far quite memorable! 👍

P.S. I am quite sure that people have been called according to the region and not based on the marks. Because almost all the people who had come for interview on 2nd were either from Bangalore or Chennai or Coimbatore! 👼

Management trainee technical (Mechanical) Interview experience 12 PM 2.12.13

Venue: HAL management academy, Bangalore

I reached that day morning and luckily I had a relative's house quite near to my venue! 😃
So everything was smooth!! I reached the management academy of HAL at around 11:30.. We were taken to a hall, where officers called our names in order to verify our documents..
My document verification was done by a lady officer.. She asked me some questions like why HAL, why not go for higher studies since you have very high marks etc.. So that was like a practice 😁
They called students in batches and we were informed that we had ample time to have lunch!! Had my lunch from the canteen and being a south indian, i found the food ok 😃
I had to wait for almost 4 hours and I was called for interview at 4:55 PM!
I had my interview with panel 4 which consisted of 5 people.. 2 of them were very seniors in their late 50s and the other three were in their early 40s.. 😃

I have to say, this was a perfect interview in every sense!! I mean this is how you should conduct an interview for the post of management trainee (technical ) While in EIL, they checked my technical knowledge alone for the entire 20 minutes, in HAL, the questions were 50-50 distributed! I cud say for sure it was 50% HR and 50% technical 😃 These ppl were interview experts who could understand our psychology really really well!! And this is one of the rarest qualities in interviewers these days!!
And the pattern they followed for the interview, was brilliant!! first 5 minutes HR, next 8-10 minutes technical and the last 5 mins HR questions again 😃 So that way those 20 mins in the room felt like I was actually talking to 5 friends 😃

Interviewer: Good evening, Nithin Pradeep 😃
Nithin: Good evening sirs!
I: Would you like us to address you by the name Nithin or Pradeep?
N: Nithin sir.. That's my name!
I: Ok Nithin. Give us a self introduction..
N: * gives self introduction*
I: We have been going through your application form and we see you've done exceptionally well in your academics with above 95% in 10th and 12th.. why only 82 in engineering?
N: Because it's not that easy to get 90% in engineering sir.. (it sounded quite odd! I mean I didnt know what else to say!! )
Interviewers looked puzzled and they had this we-already-know-that expression !!
I: Didnt you get any placement from college?
N: Yes sir, but it was an IT job. Wipro. So i didnt join..
I: Why? I know lot of mechanical engineers who join IT these days? That line separating branches, it's vanishing.. Besides, they pay good..
N: But sir, I want to work in a core engineering sector otherwise I'd feel like my entire four years have gone waste.. It's not that I dont like programming.. But this is where my passion is.. Maybe if it was a software company carrying out design work, I might have joined.. But definitely not an IT company..
They liked my reply and smiled and said 'good' 😃

I: Ok, so you want to work in a core engg sector which is why we believe you've applied for HAL. But still, let me ask you, why HAL specifically?
N: Well, HAL holds a monopoly in this aerospace sector. If i join HAL and focus my future career on this particular stream, then there's no other company that can give me half the exposure that HAL can give. Suppose I am applying for an automobile company, then options are huge.. So being a keen learner, I might get confused. But wen it comes to this sector, there's no question of that.. And above all, it'd be pride to say i am working in a company like HAL.. 😃
I: Good.. 😃 So you said 'monopoly'. Is that good or bad?

I thought for 10-15 seconds because this was a very tricky question

N: As a fresher who wants to work in a company with huge learning opportunities, this is indeed good.. 😃 I can't comment for what it could be after 5 years!
I: That's right 😃 So tell me about your project..
I explained about the project in detail. It was a heat transfer equipment with porous medium..

I: So we guess your favourite subject is heat transfer and thermal sciences..
N: Yes sir..
I: Well, we don't have much use with that here anyway.. So tell me your next favourite subject..
N: Strength of materials sir
I: We will proceed with that if you could tell me the application of SOM in manufacturing processes..
N: In the analysis part and in the design of fixtures, tool engineering etc.
I: Leave all that.. Come to the actual process
N: Well, then I will settle with production sir.. 😃
I *laughing* : ok, which manufacturing process do you like the most?
N: Welding,sir
I: What's the commonly used welding techniques in aerospace industry?
N: It's mainly electron beam welding..
I: Good, next?
N: TIG welding?
I: yes.. so which is the inert gas commonly used?
N: Argon, sir
I: Yes, very good.. do you know the purity level of the argon used?
N: I don't know sir.
I: It is 99% pure.. Ok, tell me which all metals/alloys you cud use in aerospace sector?
N: Nimonic alloys which are super alloys are used for the blades..
I: Don't go that deep.. tell me about the body..
N: Aluminium alloys sir..
I: Yes, good.. :)
I: which was your favourite lab session in college?
N: IC engines lab, sir..
I: There's a defect called carburising related to IC engines.. do you know wat it is?
N: Carbon deposits in the engine..
I: Yes.. So how can we remove it?
N: I don't know sir..
I: It can only be removed during overhauling.. Have you been to production engg lab?
N: Yes sir.. we had lab sessions.
I: Ok, what tool did you use for turning?
N: it was HSS sir..
I: Good, could you tell me the name of any of the latest tools used in industry?
N: Cermets, sir
I: Yes, good.. So tell me, are carburretors still used in vehicles?
N: It's used in one of the latest bikes.. But we do have other systems like Electronic control unit, Multi point fuel injection etc..
I: Cud you explain what is MPFI?
N: *explains it*
I: Can it increase fuel efficiency?
N: Yes sir, of course..
I: Nithin, what defines you?

I didnt actually get the question.. so i asked them to explain it..
N: well, I believe I am the type of person who tries to do things well ahead of schedule..
I: So you are a quick fixer.. Anything else? tell me some more positive qualities you have
N: Sir, I believe I can be a good team leader as well as a good team member. As i said, i am also a keen learner of new things which is a must as far as a fresher is concerned.
I: Tell me the qualities of a team leader
N: *explained whatever that came to my mind*
I: I dont think the qualities you mentioned defines an ideal team leader.. it better defines a team member.
N: I don't know sir.. But I believe I can be a team leader

I thought this was gonna go in loops and that I had lost it! But luckily they asked the next question.. 😃

I: Any proof to show you have been a team leader?
N: Yes sir.. We had our inter college technical fest Drishti and I was the head of committee for mechanical events and workshops
I: good.. 😃 Nithin, suppose you start working in HAL, where do you see yourself in 5 years?
N: Sir, you mean something like a long term goal?
I: Yes, precisely..
N: Well, as I said, currently my aim is to gain technical exposure from the company.. and eventually I want to reach that comfort zone where I can feel the company is more or less like a home and I am given huge responsibilities by the company which on fulfilment, I feel satisfaction..

Interviewers nodded their head
I: Ok Nithin, it was a pleasure interviewing you.. Thank you!
N: Thank you sirs 😃

MT Technical Electrical Interview on 3/12/2013

I reached there one day before for safe side. My slot is at 12 noon & i m there well before time.
wait at welcome room for 30 min to get visitor card and then step forward for document verification.
However I m the first person whose documents have to be verified but HR processing made me the last one to be interviewed....😉😉😉😉
bcoz she never heard about my university???????
by calculating acc. to their procedure i m getting more marks than i got in graduation....????
searching my caste name in their book...((expression i have never seen such caste certificate ))))
so she said u r not applicable as ur coll., degree not recognised........confussed 😠😠😠😠😠😠
Then i approach to their corporate manager and he allowed me bcoz he knows about my university..

Finally interview starts.......😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
There r 5 members in a panel.....

1.Tell me about urself....(got a chance to show my soft skills)😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
2. Then questions about my experience as i m working as an Executive engineer in Torrent Power Limited.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
3.Major components in Substation..(all knows CB,relay,Xmer.....etc)
4.From where ur firm got Xmer.....(Kotson,bhel......simple)
5. Xmer specification......(think little then reply......voltage rating,per unit impedance,vector group,no load losses,list of tests,.....etc)
6.Reason for humming noise.......(every EE knows...)
7.Purpose of Battery charger in substation?......((((i have done work in EHV substation so its just a simple questions for me...)))...

Feeling more confident.......👼👼👼👼👼👼👼👼

8.Tell me about ur academic project....? ...( well prepared as i knows from 2012 thread)
9.Which motor u used and how u controlled it and what r the other methods for controlling motor and why PMDC motor...????.....(this is the only question which can be arise from my project so it just a formality for me...?
10.Last one.....u have done Bsc. Engg what is it......( i explain as my coll. establish in 1950 and so on.....luckily one of the interviewer knows about my university and i again survive so i dont need to give undertaking for recognition of my university...)))

I think this just a formality type of interview u can excel easily if u go through ur project well and some basic concepts...and if u have an experience then nothing to worry they will ask only what have u done in ur ex..firm. My interview lasted in 25 minutes.

I m happy with my interview performance and hoping to get through this.....since this is my fourth PSU interview......So any thing can happen...fingers crossed
..
---I entered the interview room with all the formalities viz., may I come in , thank u and all...

--- Then they started asking about myself... intro, whr u r frm and all..

--- Then they asked questions related to my extra curricular activities...

--- Now stars the game...

It was like rapid fire round...

few questions of tech + HR...

aur bhi idhar udhar se puch daala ...

matlab " kuchh bhhi....."

dhatttttttttttt.............

let's see what happens....

# fingers crossed and took the shape of jalebi... :-p
