I just ate dinner at a fancy restaurant, where it is customary to give a tip to the waiter of between 12% and 18%. If an acceptable payment for a meal including tip would be no less than $40.88, how much did the meal cost before the tip?

a )$34.64
b) $35.55
c) $36.50
d) $39.00
e) $38.28
It should be posted in 'quant' section... anyways.. the answer is B.
X + X *(12/100) = 40.88 .. solving for X --> $36.5
X + X *(18/100) = 40.88 . solving for X --> $34.644

Can someone tell me the answer alongwith the explanation. I am confused between answer choices B and C.
Thanx!
Answer seems to be C. Why you think its gonna be B, it sounds bit confusing......
Why cant the answer be either a or c since the total meal cost comes to $40.88 on both the cases.
It was said between 12 to 18.. never mentioned including., so the tip must be more than (but not equal to) 12 and less than 18 (not equal to).. so the answer must not be equal to either A or C - but should be between these two which is B.
P.S: Even I thought the answer to be 'C' initially - but then reread the question :-).
The correct form of the sentence is: A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published, reveals that Twain provided financial assistance to one of the first Black students at Yale Law School.
But this option is not present.... guyz ur views on this plz.
