I have a doubt in the idiomatic expression of the word "free".
Ex1. Is it correct to say: India is free of England or India is free from England?
Ex2: India is not yet free (of/from) parochialism
Hai everyone kindly post answers for the following:
1.A calendar stick carved centuries ago by the Winnebago tribe may provide the first evidence that the North American Indians have developed advanced full-year calendars basing them on systematic astronomical observation.
(A) that the North American Indians have developed advanced full-year calendars basing them 'Evedence That' is wrong
(B) of the North American Indians who have developed advanced full-year calendars and based them 'Evidence is not of North Americans, but of Development, Here we are talking about calendar stick'
(C) of the development of advanced full-year calendars by North American Indians, basing them 'My choice'
(D) of the North American Indians and their development of advanced full-year calendars based same as B
(E) that the North American Indians developed advanced full-year calendars based same as A
2.A 1972 agreement between Canada and the United States reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities had been allowed to dump into the Great Lakes.
(A) reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities had been allowed to dump 'My choice'. The agreement reduced the 'amount, that was allowed till 1972' Since we are talking about two past events, earlier one will have 'HAD', and since the amounts were allowed from past till 1972, 'Perfect continuous' makes sense.
(B) reduced the phosphate amount that municipalities had been dumping
The agreement did not reduce the actual amounts dumped. They just put a limit.
(C) reduces the phosphate amount municipalities have been allowed to dump
(D) reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities are allowed to dump
(E) reduces the amount of phosphates allowed for dumping by municipalities

(A) it was only the second published by an American woman

(C) the second one only published by an American woman
My choice. I am going for parallel structure here. 'the first book by' with 'the second one only published by'
(D) the second one only that an American woman published
(E) only the second published by an American woman
4.A common disability in test pilots is hearing impairment, a consequence of sitting too close to large jet engines for long periods of time.
(A) a consequence of sitting too close to large jet engines for long periods of time My choice. After the comma, we should refer to 'Hearing impairment'. So it should start with 'a consequence'. 'Consequence of' is the right idiom.
(B) a consequence from sitting for long periods of time too near to large jet engines Wrong idiom.
(C) a consequence which resulted from sitting too close to large jet engines for long periods of time 'which resulted' redundant.
(D) damaged from sitting too near to large jet engines for long periods of time

lavya2 SaysI am new for GMAT SC, I am screwed big time, almost every second Q is attempt goes wrong.... any serious tips..... prb is, i want to score 750+ ..... plz give some tips. I am going thru OG 11... start Q were right .... then it started falling down.
The problem that we make when we start off is that we tend to select the answers that we "think" are right. We select the answers which sound similar to the english that we hear around us. First try to resist that tendency.
Second, every question follows a set pattern. There are around 7 rules that you can look out for. Eg. Parallelism, Incorrect modifiers, idioms etc.. Learn to look for them. Say for eg, the sentence has numerous commas (,) in it, then there is a good chance that they are testing Parallelism (This is just as a guide when u are starting off.. U shud get the hang of this with practice).
Third, re-read the statement atleast twice. The trickiest ones are the ones where the entire statement is underlined. Also, read the answe choices carefully.. Even if u arent able to determine what the error is from the question, the answer choices will give u good hints..
Hope this helps!

Hi friends,
I am having big confusion with comparisons.
For example I am confused between, when to use 'than do those" and when to use "than those". I have got random usages from google.
than do those
1. Institutionalized elderly women have lower food intake than do those living more independently
2. College graduates say they have a little less weight to lose than do those with less education.
3. Elderly men and women with middle school or higher education have significantly lower prevalence of asthma than do those with less or no education.
than those
1. Singapore children get less sleep than those in Western countries.
2. Black immigrants from Africa arrive healthier than those from Europe
3. Newcomers to New Jersey Earn More Than Those Whove Left,
Even after listing these sentences, i am not able to recognise the pattern.
can somebody help?

We are asked to explain the reason behind (due to the fact of painting) the increase in no.of accidents ..
The answer should be E because it is the only one tht shows a relation to the painitng of roads to accidents. The choice D doesnt say anything abt the new paintings increasing the accidents.

One Automobile manufacturer.....
You got the answer almost correct there. The reason why 'it' should not be present in the sentence is because 'it' doesnt refer to anything there. Further you are conjuncting two phrases with an 'and' and they need to be parallel in structure just like 'and would represent' should be parallel to 'that would amount' is.
ashishjha100 SaysPls help:huh:
The agreement, the first to....
First, remove all the unnecessary portions of the sentence.. You essentially have,
'The agreement, ....., is a formal protocol by which 38....'
Now try to think of another sentence where you would use the word agreement and use it in the same format and see which sounds better..
Eg: I am under an agreement with my company to do this. (or)
I am by an agreement with my company to do this..
The correct usage is "under an agreement".. This is the correct idiom to use..
Hence (C) is the answer.

You fell for the well designed trap in this question. You correctly identified that you were dealing with a question on parallelism, but u incorrectly identified the words that need to be in parallel. I am sure you selected (B) because 'borrowing' sounded parallel to 'blending', but the word blending is not a part of the parallel structure..
The words in parallel here are solar imagery, Judo-Christian thoughts and .... D, (images borrowed from) fits in here correctly.
Hence, D is the answer.

The ques is from OG11 and the OAis indeed D
Reason: The agreement of 1972 has put a restriction on a practice "that is continuing in the present" and is very much prevalent.
"A" implies an event that happened some time ago

A - is correct
B - The African land was the symbol of the possibility of freedom and not the returning of the blacks as this option suggests
C - Too Wordy

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is singular and needs a singular verb. Hence A and D are wrong. B and E have awkward sentence constructions.

Hi, let me take a shot at this... Plz correct me if i m wrong...
Hi ,
Please try to help me with the following doubt
I am not very clear how to respond to the comparisions questions confidently. For example:
A contributed more to the candidates campaign than did anyone else in the industry.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------anyone else did in the industry..
In this case, basically I am not very clear when to use than did anyone else or than did anyoneelse
1. In its most recent approach, the comet Crommelin passed the Earth at about the same distance and in about the same position, some 25 degrees above the horizon, that Halleys comet will pass the next time it appears.
(A) that Halleys comet will pass
(B) that Halleys comet is to be passing
(C) as Halleys comet
(D) as will Halleys comet
(E) as Halleys comet will do
My choice would be D. reasoning: ....Coment Crommelin passed the Earth at about the same distance........, as will Halley's comet.... looks the best.. even E is close but will do sound s awkward compared top just will. A and B is clearly wrong since the sentence should start with as. C is probably wrong coz it is not in the future tense.
2. For many travelers, charter vacations often turn out to cost considerably more than they originally seemed.
(A) they originally seemed
(B) they originally seem to
(C) they seemingly would cost originally
(D) it seemed originally
(E) it originally seemed they would
Vacations is in the pural so "they" should follow. C is unnecessarily wordy. A close fight bw A and B. I could prefer A. (not too clear about the reason though)
3. Bob Wilber became Sidney Bechets student and protg when he was nineteen and, for a few years in the 1940s, came as close to being a carbon copy of the jazz virtuoso in performance as anyone has ever come.
(A) as anyone has ever come
(B) as anyone ever had been
(C) as anyone ever had done
(D) that anyone ever did
(E) that anyone ever came
looks like a clear case of |ism.... as close to being....as any one has ever been. Answer : B
4. Although Napoleons army entered Russia with far more supplies than they had in their previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
(A) they had in their previous campaigns
(B) their previous campaigns had had
(C) they had for any previous campaign
(D) in their previous campaigns
(E) for any previous campaign
Not sure about this one: one clue i worked with is the army is refered to as "it" so it would be wrong to refer to the army as they or their. So D.
5. Because the Earths crust is more solid there and thus better able to transmit shock waves, an earthquake of a given magnitude typically devastates an area 100 times greater in the eastern United States than it does in the West.
(A) of a given magnitude typically devastates an area 100 times greater in the eastern United States than it does in the West
(B) of a given magnitude will typically devastate 100 times the area if it occurs in the eastern United States instead of the West
(C) will typically devastate 100 times the area in the eastern United States than one of the comparable magnitude occurring in the West
(D) in the eastern United States will typically devastate an area 100 times greater than will a quake of comparable magnitude occurring in the West
(E) that occurs in the eastern United States will typically devastate 100 times more area than if it occurred with comparable magnitude in the West
looks like |ism... would go with choice D... a quake in the east has to be compared to a quake in the west.... so eliminated A B and E. Prefered D to C coz it better to start with in the eastern than will typically
