1) 'Yet' is the catch ........provides contrast.Usage of 'They' is not proper.

Yeah...the OAs are:-
1. E
2. D
3. A

My answers would be
1) E
Choices A,B,C state The United States petroleum industrys cost , thus in a way say that it is the cost of US petroleum industry, which is definitely wrong.
It should be cost to US
Choice D: In this it feels that to meet the environmental changes, the cost is that much. In a way quite inappropriate way of framing a sentence as in effect it changes the meaning of the sentence,.

2) D
In comparison, than has to be used as the word fainter appears just before the underlined argument. To use compared, we need not to use faint, but more faint or less faint, a comparative adjective. Thus options A & B are ruled out.
Since comparison here is of light sources, we need to use those, a plural pronoun.
This leads to choice C being wrong.
Choice E is wrong because the word detecting makes it an attribute of the light sources mentioned beforethus making an illogical sentence

3) A

The given choice clearly conveys the meaning. Other choices actually change the tone or the meaning of the original sentence..
4. A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, is cultivated in China as part of a program to integrate traditional herbal medicine into a contemporary system of health care.
(A) A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,

(B) A derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, of the Madagascar periwinkle,
(C) A Madagascar periwinkle derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
(D) The Madagascar periwinkle has a derivative which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, that
(E) The Madagascar periwinkle, a derivative of which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,

Except E, all other options tells that a derivative of Madagascar periwinkle is cultivated in china......but it is Madagascar periwinkle that is cultivated.

Hope this helps......

Let me try to make the sentence easy to get to the answer. Read the sentence using bold letters and it will help in eliminating the errors

Why is option (E) wrong?

I guess it changes the syntax of the statement as there the statemnet is that More than ever paper is expected to be recycled this year but
E says that the "A great increase in the amount of paper that will be recycled this year is" it does not convey that the paper this time is highest than ever
