I think "it" is modifying the Comet..

I think "it" is modifying the Comet..

oh k.. let that "it" modify the comet.. but the independence clause starts with the " amateur astromer".. which makes me think that the dependent clause should be some thing that should modify only the noun which comes immediately.. can some one elaborate on this sc...

and for the second sentence what is the significane of using "the" with some phrase ?

1) the first part of the sentence is a modifier. When although is used it should have a subject and a verb
A. Who is inside the orbit---? this means astronomers are inside and use telescope illogical. Rule out
B. yes although has a subject it. It modifies things so it is not referring to astronomers but instead to comet, comet is inside the orbit of jupiter and astronomers can see via telescope grammatical and logical.Correct
C. modifies astronomers. Rule out
D.Same as C rule out
E.Same as C rule out
B seems correct
2) the construction is both X and Y where X and Y are parallel

Only C and D remain. Use of definite article "the" is not needed when we are talking about groups in general
D seems correct

@anish_goyal

"which", I still believe modifies the noun preceding it, at least it seems in this question.

which can modify both nouns and noun phrases ...you can check OG 10 or 11 ( i mean questions having usage of which in them ) . "smallest camcoreder in the world" is the noun phrase here and "which" is modifying the entire noun phrase. Its one single entity . There is no question of a noun nearer to which or further from it.

secondly, the paritciple "weighing" in (B) doesn't look correct to me at all. It should modify the camcorder but here it looks as if modifying the whole phrase "which is as long as a handheld computer".

Thats precisely what an absolute phrase is meant for : to modify the entire preceeding phrase with a participle .
Secondly , in my opinion its not modifying the phrase "which is as long as a handheld computer" but the phrase " to be the smallest network digital camcorder in the world" , coz the phrase "which is as long as a handheld computer" is enclosed between two commas , and whenever a phrase is enclosed b/w two commas it means that its a parenthetical statement merely modifying smthing previously stated in the sentence . So the crux of the matter is even if you remove the parenthitical statemnt the sentence shud make sense . Just try reading the sentence without the parenthetical element and and it would make sense to you.

The electronics company has unveiled what it claims to be the smallest network digital camcorder in the world, weighing less than 11 ounces.

Criticism , brickbats are welcome

(A) - Wrong because "either devoted...or various" is not parallel.
(B) - wrong because in 2nd part of sentence, "there" is missing
(C) - looks correct grammatically
(D) - grammatically correct
(E) - awkward

So choice is b/w C & D.
D seems better logically.

Could u pls explain the error in ans A.

I have a doubt.........in case of pronoun reference," each pronoun should have an antecedent " but in the ans B is that violated?

No it is not violated. Although introduces a subordinate clause "it" has a reference or antecedent in main clause(one that follows after comma) which is comet. Antecedent will be in the main clause. Even though "it" appears first here it should be noted that the subordinate clause also appears first. Thats what I think. Hope it helps

In Neither .... nor.... type of idiom....the noun that preceeds the verb should be agreeable in number...(singular or plural)
In your case the noun "Amy" (singular noun) is in sync with the singular verb (believes) ....and therefore she refers to a singular person..and they is pluralistic.. so "they" should be avoided..

I feel both are correct..
Because the verb " believes" has nothing to with the subject that comes after it ("they" may refer to others)
It is well conforming to Ricki and Ami..

yes, i agree that the word "believes" has nothing to do with the pronoun.. but from that u can infer that the subject is singular... could u able to figure that diff...

now if the sentence looks some thing like this.... then ur statement would make sense !..
"Ricki and Amy believe"....then it is clear that the subject is complex and it needs to be sufficed with a plural pronoun "they" instead of a singular pronoun "she"....

more over.... " she " refers to amy and not rickie.....
if " they " is pointing to some thing else other than those mentioned in the given statement.... then the answer choice is surely wrong....

I think 'E' will be a better option.
'D' implies that The govt. sold cocaine derivatives over the counter..
E- says Cocaine derivatives were available over the counter..

Can someone clarify the difference between D and E ....

E is grammatically incorrect becuase the although clause is modifying government rather than cocaine derivatives. So choice E wud imply that the govt was being sold over the counter.

the clause starting with Although shud modify government because the word govenment immediately follows the although clause ..hence D is the better answer grammatically. The underlined portion should modify government and not cocaine derivatives.
