GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

The electronics company has unveiled what it claims to be the worlds smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, and it weighs less than 11 ounces.
A. to be the worlds smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, and it weighs
B. to be the smallest network digital camcorder in the world, which is as long as a handheld computer, weighing
C. is the smallest network digital camcorder in the world, which is as long as a handheld computer, and it weighs
D. is the worlds smallest network digital camcorder, which is as long as a handheld computer and weighs
E. is the worlds smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, weighing

I also thought it is (D). However the answer given is (B).
Then in some notes, I found that "claim" is followed by infinitive.
So may be claim_to_be is correct.

Then still, B doesn't look correct to me. "which" follows "world" which makes it awkward.

Here is my explanation,........for this SC :)

claims to be - the correct idiom...
so we can eliminate C,D,E..
From A and B, we can eliminate B as is has a "which" followed by "world" .. to which it does not refer to.. so my answer is A

The answer should be B. "which" is modifying the "smallest network digital camcorder", not "world".
Also "claims to be" is the correct idiom.

In E, "the length of which is that of" is wrong.
It think it should be "the length of which is the same as that of".

Criticisms are welcome πŸ˜ƒ
answer should be (E)

(A) (B) and (C) have "often green and striped" pharse which seems to be modifying "supermarket tomatoes". But, as the statement says, these supermarket tomatoes are round and red

(D) changes the meaning of the sentence.

Thanks!! Somehow I didn't pay any attention to the meaning of the sentence.
About D & E, I thought "they" as a pronoun is not clear as to what it refers to. But "green" makes it clear.
thanx again!

ur answer is correct and ur explanation also should be correct :)
But how do u identify that "which" is not modifying "world" even though it immediately follows "world".
what "exception" to the rule applies here πŸ˜ƒ It seems to me like Organic chemistry where every kind of reaction has some exception and only exceptions are tested in the exams.

I also think that E is the best answer available.

But there is sthg that I dont understand.

The use of semicolon ( ; )is justified in only those sentences which consist of 2 independent parts. In E, it's not clear who "they" are ?

Any explanations puys?

"they are green" makes it clear that it refers to one kind of tomatoes because the other kind is Red.

plz let me know if it is still not clear.

"which" doesnt have to always modify the noun just preceding it. "Which" is a very dangerous thing on GMAT. Whenever u see which, u shud see a revolving red light and hear an ambulance siren in ur mind.

As per my understanding, the noun that "whch" modifies should be very clear. There shouldnt be any ambiguity about which noun "which" is referring to. Consider the eg below.

Eg.Cars come in various colours, which can be very cool or very ugly.

Explanation: In the above sentence, its not clear whether "which" is modifying colours or cars. There IS an ambiguity.

The above eg and explanation following it is given Manhattan SC. Which means that it is not necessary that "which" modifies the immediate preceeding noun. Only that there should be no ambiguity regarding the noun to which "which" is being referred to. It can modify the immediately preceeding noun or the noun which is farther. It just have to make sense. No ambiguities accepted.

In the question that u have posted, there is no ambiguity regarding the noun which is being modified. It has to be the camcorder - not the world - because the length of the world is not the same as the smallest camcorder.

I hope I havent confused you further. This is what I have understood from Manhattan and what I follow to solve "which" questions. I need not be 100% right on this. I just hope that this will take me through similar kinda questions in GMAT.
Otherwise I dont care what "whch" refers to πŸ˜‰

Sounds good. I'll go thru Manhattan SC guide (125 page one) once..was procrastinating it for some days. I went thru a 75 page guide but didn't find this and the example that you have mentioned there.

i think which can be used to modify both nouns and noun phrases. So , in the example at hand , which is modifying " smallest camcorder in the world " , a noun phrase . Hence, in my opinion there shudnt be any ambiguity about the usage of which in this case.
The lawyer for the defense charged that she suspected the police of having illegally taped her confidential conversations with her client and then used the information obtained to find evidence supporting their murder charges.
(A) used the information obtained to find evidence supporting
(B) used such information as they obtained to find evidence supporting
(C) used the information they had obtained to find evidence that would support
(D) of using the information they had obtained to find evidence that would support
(E) of using such information as they obtained to find evidence that would be supportive of

Can anyone confirm.......i think ans is A but in the solution given ans is D

I think the answer is D...

A B C can be ruled out straight away because they start with 'used' ...
In the first part , it says ' having taped' ..so the next part should also be
in the same tense..

Ans is D coz of parallelism , coz she supected the police of two things X n Y . Both X n Y shud b parallel.

the Q is
The electronics company has unveiled what it claims to be the world's smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, and it weighs less than 11 ounces.
A. to be the world's smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, and it weighs
B. to be the smallest network digital camcorder in the world, which is as long as a handheld computer, weighing
C. is the smallest network digital camcorder in the world, which is as long as a handheld computer, and it weighs
D. is the world's smallest network digital camcorder, which is as long as a handheld computer and weighs
E. is the world's smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, weighing

hey, don't u guys think we are trying to justify (B) because it's the given answer. I found this question in some scoretop set and they may well be wrong.

"which", I still believe modifies the noun preceding it, at least it seems in this question.
suppose the statement were..."smallest camcorder in the shop, which is the best in the market"...isn't there an ambiguity as to what "which" refers to.
or ..."smallest camcorder in the shop, which is the first in the market"
here it refers to the shop.

secondly, the paritciple "weighing" in (B) doesn't look correct to me at all. It should modify the camcorder but here it looks as if modifying the whole phrase "which is as long as a handheld computer".

(A) - Wrong because "either devoted...or various" is not parallel.
(B) - wrong because in 2nd part of sentence, "there" is missing
(C) - looks correct grammatically
(D) - grammatically correct
(E) - awkward

So choice is b/w C & D.
D seems better logically.
I think the answer is D..
