GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Parallelism can be one factor
aiding...pollinating....helping
B can be the answer as all other options fail on this criteria...

the thing is when u use semi-colon u shud have an independent clause having a subject and a verb.. but thats not the case here...
so I need help to differentiate when to use that "independent clause" thing and when not to.

i agree target750 that parallelism is an issue . but then y why wud we need a semi-colon? hope u get my point

Kunal..Thanks for the answer...dude i m more of a rookie with the verbal stuff...more than half the stuff what i read on these threads just blows over my head....never really cared about grammar in school....don't even know what subjunctive is (any many other grammar terms)....I just try to look for patterns and some intent....no wonder i scored pathetically in my GMAT verbal ...

Just a quick note...can it be a printing mistake...i was gng through the manhattan gmat website once...on one of their thread...the moderator had mentioned that one of the answer in OG was wrong...

(E) Occurring from 1982 to 1987 was an annual increase of five and ten percent in the sales of new small boats.

The intent has not changed. Rest all sound awkward in terms of time period or the annual rate of increase.

d:wordy construction
e: "five and ten" wrong and even wordier..

My take is A

"Tropical bats play important roles in the rain forest ecosystem, aiding in the dispersal of cashew, date, and fig seeds; pollinating banana, breadfruit, and mango trees; and indirectly help produce tequila by pollinating agave plants"

Looks like the problem is with the second part of statement - "and indirectly help produce". Based on my knowledge we cant use two verbs in continuation. So either one of A,B,C is the right answer. A is same so discarded. Can't describte what but something wrong with B. Option C looks more appropriate to me.

So the answer is C

On another thought....first two sentences are starting with "present continuous tense", for e.g. "aiding in the ..." and then "pollinating banana..". So the third sentence should also start with the same sense "helping....". With this analogy answer B looks more approapriate.

B. pollinating banana, breadfruit, and mango trees; and indirectly helping to produce

Yes, this is very strange. The only saving grace is that in this sentence, no option uses semicolon in a "classical" way and so, B emerges as the best among the given options.

In OG12, #92, an option reads:

The energy source on Voyager 2 is not a nuclear reactor, in which atoms are actively broken apart; rather a kind of nuclear battery that uses natural radioactive decay to produce power.

OE for this option clearly says: Subject and verb are needed after the semicolon.

Another question in OG12, #112, an option reads:

As a baby emerges from the darkness of the womb, its rudimentary sense of vision would be rated about 20/500; qualifying it to be legally blind if an adult.

Again OE for this option clearly says: The use of a semicolon instead of a comma creates a sentence fragment.

In view of these, unless I am missing something, the current OG13 question seems to be a change in position vis-a-vis the usage of semicolon, on part of writers of the official questions, and we have to accept their position. I definitely do not think this is a typo in OG 13.

Hard work..works!!

Hi Ashish

Here 'B' looks the most promising one(parallelism). But in general cases. do we need to search for a subject after semicolon or not . If "no". then what are those cases.
one more doubt. If we write a sentence after semicolon, is it necessary for those 2 sentences to be parallel.?

In the mid-1920s the Hawthorne Works of the Western Electric Company was the scene of an intensive series of experiments that would investigate changes in working conditions as to their effects on workers performance.

(A) that would investigate changes in working conditions as to their effects on workers performance
(B) investigating the effects that changes in working conditions would have on workers performance
(C) for investigating what are the effects in workers performance that changes in working conditions would cause
(D) that investigated changes in working conditions effects on workers performance
(E) to investigate what the effects changes in working conditions would have on workers performance

B looks like the best possible option

A-> wordy and indirect
C-> awkward
D-> it seems to change meaning .. its like the conditions have not changed but their effects have been..
E-> to investigate "what" is awkward

Not sure. though .. Good question.:)
