After uploading the screenshots I get a message that says upload failed . The files are in jpeg format and are well below the maximum allowable file size limit. kindly suggest
Good for Us.. I do not want to see the questions..:nono: have not given GmatPrep Exams..

Rather than accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, Christopher Columbus was sent by the king and queen of Spain to see if he could reach India by sailing west.

Use of "if" wrong in A , B and E
between C and D D looks parallel and correct accept and sailed..

Seems like i made a blooper....
with all the sentences, there is a modifer which modifies columbus. With options A, C and E, the sentences are awkward. "rather than....was flat"....columbus was sent. It should either be..."rather than...was flat"....the king and queen sent columbus....
C and D show correct intent. However D uses rather than while C uses instead of . Dont remember the rule but "rather than" seems correct

My thumb rule.. use whether when "or not" is also conveyed if otherwise
if he could reach India by sailing west ( or he could not reach)
2 options .. hence use of "if" is wrong.. use whether here.. :)
Something I read somewhere..may be useful..
informal writing : Both can be used interchangeably formal writing (CAT point of view) : The formal rule is to use if when you have a conditional sentence and whether when you are showing that two alternatives are possible
To add to this, "instead of" is generally used for joining nouns and "rather than" is used for phrases that contain verbs. I read this fact somewhere but I am not 100% sure on this. Can some one verify this ?
The answer is E. Its a direct case of violation of the parallelism rule. How items.... should be logically connected with how frequently... In D, we have the 'how..' but the ending is messed up. It goes into a different tense. E puts it correctly. Am i right??
Folks just wanted to give everybody here a heads-up Once we move to the new forum, I will be closing this thread down. It's anyway gotten way too long.
Once we move to the new section, what I'd like you to do is create a thread for each problem that you want to discuss. The title should follow the format "Source" "Type" "Question Number" "Misc information" So thread titles will now look like "OG12 DS #247" or "TIME PS #7 Book5Pg38"
Why I am doing this In this thread alone there are a ton of good problems that most likely nobody is ever going to read because it's buried too deep. And that's a serious waste. The new format allows somebody to more efficiently use the tags to find a particular solution rather than reposting the question.

As always open to suggestions and discussions
I am not really sure of the idea. Although there may be tons of material buried in this thread, making a new system where all problems will have a unique link won't be an easy way out too. I am thinking about a situation where we have more than 1000 problems then one may be searching each thread .... let me know if I may have misunderstood your idea....

If you haven't seen PG's beta version - it's more StackOverflow in nature where each query can have a top-rated answer. So if somebody posts a brilliant answer to a particular problem, everybody can see what a great answer looks like as well as other possible solutions and discussions around that problem only.
I realize that it is easy to just post in a particular thread but there's no guarantee that somebody will answer or give the best solution at all times. Plus they lose out on the discussion around that problem.
The reason I am insisting on that particular format is because people won't have to search a 1000 problems they will have to just search for the thread that contains those tags.

Certainly a very good approach! Humble suggestions from my side:
1>Addition of a timer in each thread. 2>When posting a question, the user may be given the option to mark the OA. The OA remains hidden to all others, and becomes visible to a user only when he answers it. That way he can instantly come to know whether he was correct. Also, a virtual workpad can be provided to each user that keeps track of all his correct/ incorrect attempts.
I have seen these facilities in the "PGPrep" section in the current version of PG, and was wondering if our GMAT section could also be spiced up to similar levels π

crab, Unfortunately, this won't come out for a while yet. Once we make the switch, PG-HQ will focus on ensuring everything runs smoothly for a while. The many features of PG-prep might not be possible straightaway so as and when they get rolled out there, i'll try to ensure we get it as well.
