Even astronomers were amazed at the success of the Neptune flyby, which produced a photograph of a previously undetected moon; this is likely to result in increased governmental support for the hitherto neglected U.S. space program.
(A) this is likely to result in (B) that will cause (C) and which is likely to result in (D) this success is likely to result in (E) it is likely to result with
Target750( nice target btw..:))
in this sentence also. We have a semicolon hence the sentence should be independent and should have a subject and a verb u choose'd "A". but we do not have any subject here. hence wrong "success" should be present
whenever in doubt go with a sentence that presents a clear meaning..

I would go for option "d", ; is there and the independent clause a noun (success) and a verb. rest options are all dependent and lack a noun.
Even though Bla Bartks music has proved less popular than Igor Stravinskys and less influential than Arnold Schonbergs, it is no less important.
(A) Stravinskys and less influential than Arnold Schonbergs, it (B) Stravinskys and less influential than Arnold Schonbergs, he (C) Stravinskys is and less influential than Arnold Schonbergs is, it (D) Stravinsky and not as influential as Arnold Schonberg, he (E) Stravinsky and not as influential as Arnold Schonberg, it

1)In undisputed primary forests, the Honduran mahogany grows up to a height of 130 feet, having a buttressed trunk and a crown that spread over canopy of lesser trees
a)up to a height of 130 feet, having a buttressed trunk and a crown that spread b)up to 130 feet in height, and with a buttressed trunk and a crown spreading c)to as high as 130 feet in height, having a buttressed trunk and with a crown that spread d)to a height of 130 feet, with a buttressed trunk and with a crown that spreads e)as high a height as 130 feet, having a buttressed trunk and a crown that spreading

a)crown that spread...eliminated....same goes for c too left with b,d,e e)a high a height as....too wordy and awkward....so b,d remain having a buttresses trunk and crown that spreads...sva error
so answer B should be correct
I reworked on the problem as i gave I guess answer A should be correct :D what i missed during firs glance were : trunk and crown are together taken as subject...i wrongly eliminated a and c, as i just saw crown as the subject didn't realize the logical part that how can a trunk spread over ??? it should be the crown
So i went like this : eliminate e...too wordy d has sva error in c ...having a buttressed trunk and with a crown don't gel well
so left with a and b in otpion a .having provides logical flow but in option b with a buttressed trunk.... doesn't sound gd. so option A...i hope it is correct π
Option A and B might be incorrect. grows up is redundant In option D the word "with" is separating crown and trunk...so spreads might well fit in. The questions looks simple but has many checks for the correct answer :sneaky:
can there a usage such as grows down ??for e.g the roots grow down... ?

u got it right why2domba.. we are talking about trees and they grow up not down.. hence "up" here is redundant.. D is the correct answer..(SVO also)

The canopy only spreads over the canopy of lesser trees. Hence A and C are rejected B - Awkward when read with the whole sentece D - Correct E - Awkward

Federal incentives now encourage investing capital in commercial office buildings despite vacancy rates in existing structures that are exceptionally high and no demand for new construction.
(A) investing capital in commercial office buildings despite vacancy rates in existing structures that are exceptionally high and (B) capital investment in commercial office buildings, even though vacancy rates in existing structures are exceptionally high and there is (C) capital to be invested in commercial office buildings even though there are exceptionally high vacancy rates in existing structures with (D) investing capital in commercial office buildings even though the vacancy rates are exceptionally high in existing structures with (E) capital investment in commercial office buildings despite vacancy rates in existing structures that are exceptionally high, and although there is
A - means building are very high and not the vacancy rates; The sentence seems to talk about vacancy rates , Hence rejected B- Correctly places even though, shows a contradiction C- Awkward D- even though is wrongly placed. E- Awkward
Except for a concert performance that the composer himself staged in 1911, Scott Joplins ragtime opera Treemonisha was not produced until 1972, sixty-one years after its completion.
(A) Except for a concert performance that the composer himself staged (B) Except for a concert performance with the composer himself staging it (C) Besides a concert performance being staged by the composer himself (D) Excepting a concert performance that the composer himself staged (E) With the exception of a concert performance with the staging done by the composer himself
B-> "staging" is wrong and "it" also seems unnecessary C-> "Except" means "minus" Besides means "in addition to" .. Here except conveys an appropriate meaning. "being" also seems incorrect D-> "Excepting is" is incorrect E-> Too wordy
Few people realize that the chance of accidental injury or death may be as great or greater in the safety of their own homes than in a plane or on the road.
(A) may be as great or greater in the safety of their own homes than (B) is at least as great or greater in the safety of their own homes than (C) might be so great or greater in the safety of their own home as (D) may be at least as great in the safety of their own homes as (E) can be at least so great in the safety of their own home as
This one's tricky for me. (boomeranged in my head) E is not the answer , use of can C is again wrong "so great". also tense needs to be checked ...few people...own homes Can it be D.. with a idiomatic usage "as great in.....as in...." If we say that we are talking about a fact, then even b can be given a shot. Someone help me with this please

D has the correct idiom use.. as.... as and "at least" is economical than "great or greater"..

Bored of seeing this question. Went thorugh the first 80 pages of this thread, saw this more than 5 times...and here it is again...risen from the dead...
D has the correct idiom use.. as.... as and "at least" is economical than "great or greater"..
