GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Hi,

Can someone please explain this parallelism question to me?

Incorrect: After the typhoon, the citizens of the county were left without food, power and huge bills for reconstructing their houses.

Correct: After the typhoon, the citizens of the county were left without food, without power, and with huge bills for reconstructing their houses.

Correct: After the typhoon, the citizens of the county were left without food and power and with huge bills for reconstructing their houses.

How can we explain the correct choices?
Incorrect: After the typhoon, the citizens of the county were left without food, power and huge bills for reconstructing their houses.

the above sentence incorrrectly applies without as a modifier to food, power and bills.

While the actual question *might* want you to imply that without is a modifier for food and power and with as a modifier for bills.

Correct: After the typhoon, the citizens of the county were left without food and power and with huge bills for reconstructing their houses.

P.S: It is actually ridiculous to discuss just the answers w/o a proper question. I assumed a hell lot here!

I am confused here about the usage of 'comma' and 'and'.

i think answer will be e..
the reason that these families can not qualify to buy home is because they use the standard 25 percent of their incomes meant for housing savings..
which is only conveyed by e . correct me if wrong

Option A seems to be the correct answer !

Yes parrallelism is very much tested and A and E seems to be the nearest..but E don't fits to the essence of the sentence.

the correct answer can not be A.. because we can not use would ( i.e a subjunctive form) it has to be will
and D maintains parallelism.. hence answer is D

Correct me if I am wrong. If the parallelism is tested, then look & make should be parallel. But in option D they are not.

One more similar doubt:

When do we use 'Compare to' and 'Compare with' ? I read in 'Spidey GMAT' notes that 'To' is used to compare unlike things and 'With' is used to compare like things. Is there any other context when we use these two?

sorry i said it a little wrong..

Do not assume that all verb and verbal forms must be parallel..
some times we need to keep it that way.. in this sentence -ing form is used to provide additional information hence it "should not be parallel" with 'look'.. if it were.. then that would lay equal emphasis on both the sentences ..and that would distort the meaning of it..

ok lemme quote an example from manhattan Sc . it will clear ur doubts

Sal applied himself in his new job, arriving early everyday, skipping lunch regularly ,and leaving late every night.

is this correct
OR
