GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

One more similar doubt:

When do we use 'Compare to' and 'Compare with' ? I read in 'Spidey GMAT' notes that 'To' is used to compare unlike things and 'With' is used to compare like things. Is there any other context when we use these two?

compare to is used to establish similarities between two obejcts
compare with is used to establish differences ..

simple. :)

eg.
In Argentina, Maradona is compared to god
sorry i said it a little wrong..

Do not assume that all verb and verbal forms must be parallel..
some times we need to keep it that way.. in this sentence -ing form is used to provide additional information hence it "should not be parallel" with 'make'.. if it were.. then that would lay equal emphasis on both the sentences ..and that would distort the meaning of it..

ok lemme quote an example from manhattan Sc . it will clear ur doubts

Sal applied himself in his new job, arriving early everyday, skipping lunch regularly ,and leaving late every night.

is this correct
OR

Sal applied himself in his new job, arrived early everyday, skipped lunch regularly ,and left late every night

Any views on "rate of / rate for"
for ex, some sentences have 'rate of return', some are like 'base rate for loans' etc.

Rate of is used when we have to express "measure"
For example: Rate of change in commodity prices is indicative of a highly volatile market.
Here we are using "rate of" to express "measure".
The sentence implies that the measure of change in commodity prices is indicative...

Rate for is used when we have to express "price"
For example: Rates for gold have been consistently increasing.
Here it is clear that we are talking about price of gold.

So when you see the word - rate, see if you can replace it with price. If yes, then you must use "for" with rate.
However, when it makes sense to replace "rate" with "measure", you must use "of" with rate.

very well explained Kunal "rate of " explains the speed..as in rate of change of displacement(with time) is velocity..

while "rate for" is used where price thingy is involved!!

I just googled and noticed a sentence.
The overall literacy rate for Scheduled Castes increased from a mere 2.3% in 1941 to 54.7% in 2001.

there's no price involved, there's a change and there is rate for!

here more than "Rate for" or "rate of"..."of" and "for" usage is important...

or else there are number of sentences which say "Literacy rate of..."

Not a specific question, more of a generic advise...
