Hi puys,
I want to know that which book would be good to practice SC for GMAT?
I have gone through the concepts but now want to practice q's?
Please recommend.![]()
Please refer to the sentence below:
- Although most consumers are suspicious of such offers, Colin is desirous of purchasing the two-for-one vacation package.
The correct sentence is as follows:
- Although most consumers are suspicious of such offers, Colin wants to purchasing the two-for-one vacation package.
My question is, why we cannot replace "are suspicious of" with the verb "suspect" based on V-A-N principle?
Note: V-A-N (Verb>Adjective or Adverb>Noun)
Thanks in advance!
I read following question on one of the sites:
Can any one please explain what is wrong with Option 2 here?
It has become more popular for parents to send their children to private schools rather than sending them to public ones.
1. private schools rather than sending them to public ones
2. private schools rather than public schools
3. study at private schools rather than sending them to public ones
4. be schooled privately rather than in public schools
5. private rather than public schools
There is absolutely nothing wrong with option 2. There can be a case of preference in comparison with option 5 but I think option 2 is more appropriate compared to option 5.
cat_aspirant_ SaysThere you go my friend. Best of luck for your GMAT.
its not getting downloaded ..i mean these two sc doc files..

Very popular from 1900 until the 1920s, the renewed interest in ceiling fans began when the energy crisis in 1974 forced homeowners to look for alternative methods of heating and cooling.
(A) Very popular from 1900 until the 1920s, the renewed interest in ceiling fans began
(B)
Looks like Option B.

(B) The renewed interest in ceiling fans, which were very popular from 1900 until the 1920s, began
My take - option B.
Sentence E has erroneous use of tense

My take,
Grammatically i feel both 2 & 5 are correct. 5 is more apt though
Has anyone used Veritas SC book ? And how good is it ? Is it worth purchasing ?
Hi Puys,
Please explain why option (C) is wrong for the below question.
1. A little under a million years ago, the briny waters of the Baltic Sea began flooding into the cold North Atlantic: geologists are still debating whether the flood was gradual or created a cataclysm.
(A) whether the flood was gradual or created a cataclysm
(B) if the flood was gradual or created a cataclysm
(C) about whether the flood was gradual or cataclysmic
(D) whether the flood was gradual or cataclysmic
(E) whether the flood was gradual or it created a cataclysm
Also, Explain why option (D) is wrong in the below question.
2. According to some economists, the July decrease in unemployment so that it was the lowest in two years suggests that the gradual improvement in the job market is continuing.
(A) so that it was the lowest in two years
(B) so that it was the lowest two-year rate
(C) to what would be the lowest in two years
(D) to a two-year low level
(E) to the lowest level in two years
Hi Puys,
Please explain why option (C) is wrong for the below question.
(E) to the lowest level in two years
I suppose the answer for the first question is E.
(A)flood was gradual or created a cataclysm is not parallel.
(B)Again ruled out for the same reason.
(C)about whether is ambiguous and wordy
(D)flood was gradual or cataclysmic isn't parallel.
(E)'flood was gradual or it created a cataclysm' the thought is clear.
The answer for the Second Question is also 'E' I suppose...
Can somebody correct me..??
Hi Puys,
Please explain why option (C) is wrong for the below question.
(E) to the lowest level in two years
For the first Q I would go with D; for C about whether seems redundant andunidiomatic.
For the second Q I would go with E, in D a two year low level indicates that the low level remained all through 2 years but that isnt the case you need to indicate the lowest level in 2 years and it is always better to place the correct object as close to its position before it gets modified. Not sure if the second part made sense.
Can anyone PM me soft copy of Aristole SC?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Puys,
Please explain why option (C) is wrong for the below question.
(E) to the lowest level in two years
What is source of these questions?
For 1) Answer is D, "about" is preposition, preposition cant contain a clause. Can contain only nouns.
For 2) "The july decrease" - sounds nonsensical. I think it means decrease in july. Answer E sounds the best one. Answer D is wrong because what do you mean by "two year low level"? the construction seems grammatically incorrect though it may be colloquial
Can some one explain why the answer here is A?
Starting Thursday, Wal-Mart Stores is planning to offer free shipping on its Web site on almost 60,000 gift items, including many toys and electronics
A. is planning to offer free shipping on its Web site on almost 60,000 gift

D. will plan to offer free shipping on its Web site on almost 60,000 gift items, including
E. is planning to offer free shipping on its Web site on almost 60,000 gift items, that include
Ans: is A can some one explain why not E
Explanation on SC grail says
The use of that to introduce a non-restrictive clause is incorrect on the GMAT, which should be used instead.
This website says that, 'that' could be used to introduce restrictive clause.
Clauses - Restrictive and Nonrestrictive
Kinda confused.
Thanks a lot,
Murthy
Not sure if Grail is best for GMAT preparation. "IS PLANNING" is present progressive indicating action is taking place right now. And according to Manhattan Sentence Correct guide, the verb should be used in that form for the same.
What does "non restrictive" clause mean?
...gift items, that include...
that is singular, gift items is plural - that couldn't modify items...right?
those include or which include would work i think.

Always remember that 'that' followed by a comma is more likely to be incorrect. And for me the main reason why E could be wrong is that includes many toys and electronics implies that 60,000 items include many... but the original sentence seems to imply that free shipping includes many... well the main diff between the two is that A implies free shipping includes 60,000 gift items and many toys... while E implies that free shipping includes 60,000 gift items, which in turn includes many....
Someone can correct if I am wrong
