B is not the correct answer here.
Here is the sentence with choice B:
Declining values for farm equipment and land, which farmers use as collateral to borrow against to get through the harvest season, is going to force many lenders to tighten or deny credit this spring.

  1. Clause 1: Declining values for farm equipment and land,
  2. Clause 2: which farmers use as collateral to borrow against to get through the harvest season,
  3. Clause 1 (Contd.): is going to force many lenders to tighten or deny credit this spring.

As you can see the SV pair of clause 1 does not agree in number. Declining values is going...Values is plural and hence requires a plural verb.

Thus, choice B is incorrect.

My Answer is E

Hi Guyz,

Can anyone please help me in this sentence and the theory behind the right answer.

:cheerio:
According to some economists, the July decrease in unemployment so that it was the lowest in two years suggests that the gradual improvement in the job market is continuing.
(A) so that it was the lowest in two years
(B) so that it was the lowest two-year rate
(C) to what would be the lowest in two years
(D) to a two-year low level
(E) to the lowest level in two years

Answer should be E not C.

Thanks eGMAT for your explanation. I have one more doubt. Can you please explain how choice E is the correct one. what is this modifier modifying?
hi all,
I came across the following problem in MGMAT test (I hope posting it is not copyright violation. Pls let me know...I am a newbee). I am not convinced with the solution and explanation given there. Could any one of you take a shot at it and explain?

Q. Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing of eight war ships as fireships, vessels filled with pitch, brimstone, gunpowder, and tar and sent downwind toward the closely-anchored Spanish fleet.

1.Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing

2.The defeat of the Spanish Armada, which stymied the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing

3.The defeat of the Spanish Armada, which stymied the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also due to the sacrificing

4.Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrifice

5.Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the defeat of the Spanish Armada was due not only to gale winds that favored the British but also to the sacrifice

My Take option 5 as it does not violate the rule of parallelism. option 1,2 and 3 use sacrifing which is not correct. and in option 4 "defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only gale winds" is incorrectly pointing that the defeat was gale winds

Please let me know if this is correct

According to some economists, the July decrease in unemployment so that it was the lowest in two years suggests that the gradual improvement in the job market is continuing.
(A) so that it was the lowest in two years
(B) so that it was the lowest two-year rate
(C) to what would be the lowest in two years
(D) to a two-year low level
(E) to the lowest level in two years

Yeah I think the answer is E. But I am confused between D and E. D also looks grammatically correct. I have seen usage like - Euro hit a four-year low.

But I will mark E as the correct answer. πŸ˜ƒ

My Take option 5 as it does not violate the rule of parallelism. option 1,2 and 3 use sacrifing which is not correct. and in option 4 "defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only gale winds" is incorrectly pointing that the defeat was gale winds

The answer is correct. But pls explain how did you eliminate 4? I think you have confused your explanation with option 3

Declining values for farm equipment and land the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season, is going to force many lenders to tighten or deny credit this spring.

(A) the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season, is
(B) which farmers use as collateral to borrow against to get through the harvest season, is
(C) the collateral which is borrowed against by farmers to get through the harvest season, is
(D) Which farmers use as collateral to borrow against to get through the harvest season, are
(E) the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season, are

Here is the sentence with choice E.

Declining values for farm equipment and land, the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season, are going to force many lenders to tighten or deny credit this spring.

I believe you are asking about the shaded modifier. This modifier modifies the preceding noun phrase - farm equipment and land.
A quick check for this: The following sentence makes complete sense:

Farm equipment and land ARE the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season.

(Modified Noun Phrase) IS/ARE (Noun Modifier)

    Hi Prats,

I suggest you do not use 1000 SCs. it has many errors and it may end up confusing you more than helping you.

MGMAT book will be good. You may try their new basics book. You may also try Aristotle book. This is online book. Also, for GMAT specific SC, you could try out GMAT Club Grammar book as well. All these are available for purchase. If you want some free stuff, then you may check out e-GMAT for their free trial.

    Thanks,

In the mid-1920s the Hawthorne Works of the Western Electric Company was the scene of an intensive series of experiments that would investigate changes in working conditions as to their effects on workers' performance.

    a) that would investigate changes in working conditions as to their effects on workers' performance
    b) investigating the effects that changes in working conditions would have on workers' performance.
    c) for investigating what the effects on workers' performance are that changes in working conditions would cause
    d) that investigated changes in working conditions' effects on workers' performance
    e) to investigate what the effects changes in working conditions would have on workers' performance

    OA: B.

    Why is D incorrect?

    d) that investigated changes in working conditions' effects on workers' performance
    e) to investigate what the effects changes in working conditions would have on workers' performance

    OA: B.

    Why is D incorrect?

Choice D has meaning error in that it does not communicate the intended meaning of the sentence.

Now, the original sentence does not communicate its meaning clearly. But as you read it, you can infer the intended meaning. Here it is:

Certain experiments were conducted in the mentioned company. These experiments investigated the effects on workers' performance. The effects were due to changes in working conditions of workers.

Now choice D does not communicate this message:

Per choice D, the experiments investigated changes.
Changes in the effects on performance.

So while the intended meaning is that the working conditions changed and the experiments investigated how these changes had an effect on the performance. This choice indicates that the effects themselves changed. There is no talk of the changes in the working conditions.
There are no legal limits, as there are for cod an haddok, on the size of monkfish that can be caught, a circumstance that contributes to their depletion through overfishing.

    a. There are no legal limits, as there are for cod an haddok, on the size of monkfish that can be caught, a circumstance that contributes to their depletion through overfishing.

    b. There are no legal limits on the size of monkfish that can be caught, unlike cod or haddok, a circumstance that contributes to depleting them because they are being overfished.

    c. There are legal limits on the size of cod and haddok that can be caught, but not for monkfish, which contributes to its depletion through overfishing.

    d. Unlike cod and haddok, there are no legal size limits on catching monkfish, which contributes to its depletion by being overfished.

    e. Unlike catching cod and haddok, there are no legal size limits on catching monkfish, contributing to their depletion because they are overfished.

pls can anyone explain whether the use of "their" an "them" as highlighted is correct? Also try finding the correct answer

    Thanks

i think OA should be :A, although 'its' in place of 'their' would have been nice...

    whts OA btw?

I think A is the best answer... THEIR seems fine as it can only refer either to legal limits or to cad and haddock (i am assuming it to be cad and haddock and not cad an haddock) .. these are the only two plural nouns .. reference to legal limits is surely nonsensical ..

    Cheers!

and as dipak is suggesting, the sentence makes sense if we talk about depletion of monkfish an not "cod an haddock"
This ques is from GMAT prep software. I feel there's more juice in it than what we see.

Definitely not the type of SC i would like to see on the D-Day. In case you all noticed that the subject of the clause is "size of monkfish" and not monkfish. so even the argument that monkfish could be plural also is not completely valid. This is the case of missing antecedent for pronoun and still not incorrect.(ignorance is bliss?)

could anyone tell me all the errors in option C)
