As a result of the ground-breaking work of Barbara McClintock, many scientists now believe that all of the
information encoded in 50.000 to 100.000 of the different genes found in a human cell are contained in
merely three percent of the cell's DNA.
(A) 50,000 to 100,000 of the different genes found in a human cell are contained in merely
(B) 50,000 to 100,000 of the human cell's different genes are contained in a mere

(E) the 50,000 to 100,000 different genes found in a human cell is contained in a mere.

OA - E
(Can someone tell me how to put a spoiler alert. Right now I have put the OA in white color)

Here are my questions: Why should we use "the" before "50,000 to 10,0000"? Why should we not use "the" before human cell? Why should we not use merely? Does merely not modify the adjective 3%, so it should be an adverb?

Please help.

First of all , we will eliminate the choices a,b and c as they incorrectly use the verb 'are' to match with "all of the information". Information being a noun countable noun is a singular word and hence the verb should be singular as well, and so we are left with the last two options.

Now, further elimination is done on the basis of what is written below:

"information encoded in 50.000 to 100.000 of the different genes": This statement conveys that the information is stored ONLY in the genes numbering from 50000 to 100000.

If we put a "the" before the number, it talks about the possibly total number of different genes(with a lower and upper limit to it)

Hope that clarifies.

1.

A. The sentence is awkward
B. correctly uses wanting;correct answer
C.Too wordy
4. will take is not right
5. tiring is not right

2

Would is a helping verb which expresses the future form the past's point of view. Since we do not have anything in this statement described as being in past. We can simply eliminate all the choices with would. So we eliminate A, D and E

Out of B and C, Option C uses a 'which' to denote the noun "popular tax breaks" which is followed by 'a number of' and that makes the noun a plural. If this statement was right, it would have used :"which include" and not includes. So C is wrong. Answer is B

Logically, the sentence suggests that there are 50,000 to 100,000 different genes in a human cell. However, some options (A and D) use of different genes. This seems to suggest that there are perhaps more than 100,000 different genes, but the fact mentioned in the sentence (that all information is contained in mere 3% of DNA) is only applicable to 50,000 to 100,000 of those genes.

Again, this is a meaning issue.

hi there...
1. Spoiler alert option is not avl on PG i guess.
2. SV agreement requires information to be singular(is)
3. Mere(an adj) not merely(an adverb) should be used to modify the phrase 3% of the cells DNA. 3% of ... is not an adjective in itself.
4. Using above 2 rules we eliminate other 4 options..a b c d...and hence the usage of "the" anywhere in the question becomes a non issue....

Hope this helps....

E. one of the most influential artists in the American theater, Stella Adler, trained several generations of actors whose ranks included
Correct Answer = C
I want to know why "who" is incorrect in Choice A.

To understand why "who" is incorrect, lets first understand the meaning of the sentence. This sentence talks about Stella Adler. It indicates qualities of Stella Adler. Per the meaning of the sentence, Stella Adler actually trained several generations of actors.

Now the placement of "who modifier" in choice A creates ambiguity in this meaning since it is not clear what this modifier modifies.

1: Does it modify "most influential artists in the American theater", implying that many influential artists in the American theater trained several generations of actors and Stella Adler was simply one of them.

2: Does it modify "one of the most influential artists in the American theater" and hence modifies Stella Adler (notice the presence of linking verb = was, which creates sort of an equation here), implying the intended meaning that Stella trained several generations of actors.

3: Lastly, does it modify "American theater", which is a complete non-sensical reference.

Because of these possible references, the wording of "who" modifier is incorrect. Choice C corrects this error by converting this modifier to a verb-ing modifier. This modifier now extends the idea presented in the preceding clause.

hi all,
I came across the following problem in MGMAT test (I hope posting it is not copyright violation. Pls let me know...I am a newbee). I am not convinced with the solution and explanation given there. Could any one of you take a shot at it and explain?

Q. Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing of eight war ships as fireships, vessels filled with pitch, brimstone, gunpowder, and tar and sent downwind toward the closely-anchored Spanish fleet.

the idea presented in the preceding clause.

That's perhaps not a possibility, since "who" cannot modify "American theater" ("which" should have ideally come).

Yes you are correct that "who" cannot modify inanimate objects. However, I threw it in there since I was explaining the pronoun reference strictly in terms of the meaning of the sentence. Also note that "who" is in the underlined portion of the sentence, and so it it makes sense for "who" to modify the "theater", then the error is not in terms of pronoun reference but it is in terms of pronoun usage in that "which" should be used in place of "who".

For example, say the sentence were as follows. Note how I have changed the "who modifier".

As an actress and, more importantly, as a teacher of acting, Stella Adler was one of the most influential artists in the American theater, who was started almost a century ago on the lines of British theater.

Now when we read the sentence, it is clear that "who was started almost a century ago" should refer to American theater. Now the modifier placement is correct but its wording is incorrect since as you stated "who" cannot modify inanimate objects. Correct pronoun is "which".

As I always say - concentrate on the complete meaning of the sentence. Let the meaning guide you!! πŸ˜ƒ πŸ˜ƒ

ok thanks. I thought your last post said that "who" referring to "American theater" was "non-sensical" as well. So, either one looks at it grammar-wise or meaning wise, "who" cannot refer to "American theater".
