GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

OA are
1.D
2.B ,use of base form of verb with future tense (The comp. s/w ..will not only meet, but (will) also have....)
3.B,wonder why?

Software is an uncountable noun. So it does not take any plural form by itself.
In that case, option A should be the correct one...
The computer software ..will not only meet..but also has.....
You can verify it from the below link.
uncountable, uncountable noun, or mass noun A noun that cannot be used freely with numbers or the indefinite article, and which therefore takes no plural
form.

Expert puys..we need ur help here..

I don't get it...

computer s/w should take a singular noun but the thing is the sentence should also have "to facilitate" to make the answer correct...which is missing in the other option..

Teratomas are unusual forms of cancer because they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone not normally found in the organ in which the tumor appears.
(A) because they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone
(B) because they are composed of tissues like tooth and bone that are
(C) because they are composed of tissues, like tooth and bone, tissues
(D) in that their composition, tissues such as tooth and bone, is
(E) in that they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone, tissues

I will go with option (B)
"Such as" refers to examples and hence the usage of "such as" in this sentence would make tooth and bone to be the actual composition of the cancer tissues itself, but the author intends to say that the tissues of the cancer are similar to tooth and bone...With this as the base, i have eliminated options (A),(D) and (E).
I eliminate (C) because usage of the word "tissues" again seems to be redundant.

Expert Puys..I have a doubt regarding the usage of "because" and "in that"...I have read that "in that" is also a correct form, but it is wordy to use it.Can you explain the usage of "in that" and does GMAT considers "in that" as correct under any circumstances.

Hi,

(C) because they are composed of tissues, like tooth and bone, tissues
(D) in that their composition, tissues such as tooth and bone, is
(E) in that they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone, tissues

I think the answer should be B

A should take a comma in the end and the rest sound inappropriate..

HI

I feel answer to this question should be E as it corrects misplaced modifier error. "Not normally" in the above sentance is incorrectly refering to "bone". To correct it , option E places ", tissues". Also "such as" is correct in option E. We normally say flowers such as rose and lilly not like rose and lilly. Rose and lilly not similar to flowers, so using such as (for example ) is fine.

Its a parallelism question.
Later part says with the development so the first part must also have with. We have A and B left. Then the question talks about costs of 2 things i.e. upgrading data processing and development so I must use plural noun- costs and not cost. The 2 subjects are cost associated with upgrading data processing equipment (1) and with the development..(2)
B should be the answer. :cheerio:

The question involves subject-verb agreement and parallelism.
Parallelism: Associated with X and with Y
Subject-Verb agreement : To choose between cost and costs, we can simply use the "are" in "are prohibitive" as the indicator.

"Costs associated with X and Y are prohibitive"

Moreover, "associated with" is the correct idiomatic form.If the options include associted to, we can eliminate it on the basis of correct idiomatic usage.

So the correct answer should be (B)

Hi,
"waters off" is a wronf usage.it should be "waters of". let us leave this since it is the same in all the answer choices.
We can easily eliminate the answers with conjunction "and".
The options left are A,D and E.
Option D is awkward - "had generally found"
Between A and E, I will choose A because "generally found" is better than "found generally".
