GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Here is a question:
In Xena College, a rule has been passed that permits students to cook and serve their food, as well as to buy it.

A. Same
B. permits students to cook, serve, and to buy their food.
C. permits students to cook, to serve, and buy food.
D. will permit the student to cook, serve, as well as to buy food.
E. will permit food to be cooked, served, as well as bought by students.

My understanding is-
B is wrong because it should have been "to serve" as followed by to cook and comma.
C is wrong because it should have been "to buy food" as followed by "...to serve,(comma) and ..."
D is wordy and awkward- "will permit..." and it should have been "to serve".....
E is wordy and awkward- "will permit..." and passive "by students".
A is the best option as it starts with subject-verb agreement: "permits", also infinitives are parallel-
to cook (no comma) and serve their food, .....to buy...

Since, there is no comma after the to cook and followed by and it doesn't require "to" serve and is parallel.

I want to confirm whether my understanding is correct.

Also, one another doubt I have is-
But two infinitives + noun is NOT okay
Ex: He liked to sail, to swim and girls.
I feel this is correct but not sure why is it wrong. Please clarify.

Juz applyin POE
A: unnecessary wordy option since the 3 elements of the series can be expressed x,y and z, also "it" creates a PE
B: Best one
C: 'to buy' is missing
D: 'has been passed' doen't agree with 'will permit' in tense and also the error repeated from A
E: passive construction + error in D

pl. explain

(1)
A. requirements of maintenance and consuming of special racing fuel by earlier high horsepower models - no parallelism
B. requirements by earlier high horsepower models of consuming of special racing fuel and maintenance - wordy
C. requirements for consuming of special racing fuel and maintenance of earlier high horsepower models - I eliminated this for the beginning sentence "requirements for"
D. consumption of special racing fuel and maintenance that was required by earlier high horsepower models - using singular verb
E. maintenance and consumption of special racing fuel that were required by earlier high horsepower models - maintains parallelism and uses the correct verb "were"

2) The sentence is in present tense.

A. have been priced to sell, and they are - "have" is redundant
B. are priced to sell, and they have - rephrasing the sentence "are priced to sell, and they have sold"..no
C. are priced to sell, and they do. - rephrasing the sentence "are priced to sell, and they do sell" - correct
D. are being priced to sell, and have - same as B..also missing the pronoun "they" which is needed to refer back to the noun.
E. had been priced to sell, and they have - this changes the tense. makes it perfect past.

3)

Q. In one of the most surprising victories in WWI, the newly formed Russian communist state was routed by the Polish General, Jozef Pilsudski, demanding that it should push back its borders east of Vilnius.

A. demanding that it should (we are talking about the past in the sentence, also should is wordy)

D. who demanded that it CORRECT

4)By installing electrical pumps is a modifier. It should modify farmer not engineer /houses.So only D fits in.

5) to sympathize with is the correct idiom. So this rules out A ,C & E.
If you plug in D in the sentence will be...

they has a proper antecedent(conservatives) but I think that is not required .So answer is B.

1)being a carbon copy of x as anyone ever had been.
"being a ",so done/did can't fit .option B maintains parallelism.

2)while is used to indicate to events occuring in same time frame. If is used for conditional statements. So D & E options are ruled out .

Hi sadz,

The sc1000 is an unofficial version, with most of the questions from scoretop. And it does not have detailed explanations. I had a copy of it when I was preparing, but did not like it as a book without explanations is not so useful. I would recommend against it for 2 reasons - it is not legal questions and it has no explanations and many debatable OAs. If you still need it, you can google for it and find it somewhere in rapidshare etc.

Hi Shawn....The answer for :The computer software being designed for a project studying Native American access to higher education will not only meet the needs of that study, but also has the versatility and power of facilitating similar research endeavors
should be option (A).
The "has" is the verb for computer software which is singular.
Your claim for considering "meet" as the indicator here is not right because, singular verb form is always used after will/will not.
Example: Ram will not meet Ravi today.

OA are
1.D
2.B ,use of base form of verb with future tense (The comp. s/w ..will not only meet, but (will) also have....)
3.B,wonder why?

I have a doubt here..is "Software" a collective noun?
