yes saurav you are correct

yes saurav you are correct

Is this the question of any AIMCAT or MCs???????? sounds kinda familiar to me.
Ishita Kothari Says
yes saurav you are correct

My take is E as vocal tracts agrees with "those" of apes.

A: "a vocal tract" do not agrees with "those"
well c would be wrong for the same reason as D&E.....it; suggests that the vocal tract was without language

A. neanderthals had A vocal tract ... (singular) that resembled those of the apes (plural) .... WRONG
so i am only left with b

Ishita Kothari Says
but if E were to be correct then the vocal tract would possess no language...which is not the case! it is the neadrethals that lack language

Ishita Kothari Says
The OA is B .... cause i presume that Ape's in this case shows possession...

Ishita Kothari Says
yes saurav you are correct

Thanks!
ATB!
Can any of you'll help me this one.

Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes and so were probably without languageďźŒa shortcoming that may explain why they were supplanted by our own species
(A) Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes
comparision of vocal tract with vocal tracts. singular Vs singular comparision is preferred. similarly, plural Vs plural
(B) Neanderthals had a vocal tract resembling an ape's
looks good. correct comparision + Neanderthals is the subject. they refers to Neanderthals and not to ape's since they is plural
(C) The vocal tracts of Neanderthals resembled an ape's
vocal tracts are the subject - hence wrong - vocal tracts cannot be without language
(D) The Neanderthal's vocal tracts resembled the apes'
same as C
(E) The vocal tracts of the Neanderthals resembled those of the apes
same as C

I think its B but i dont know if Ape's (vocal tract) is supposed to be understood

Let me try.
Please find the explanation inlined.

PS: Ape's vocal tract is correctly understood from the context here since vocal tract has already been mentioned in the underlined part of the sentence.

IMO's as highlighted..Pls let us know the OA's.
Couple of things:

1. Ellipsis is used in B. So, it reads: "Neanderthals had a vocal tract resembling an ape's (vocal tract)".

2. It might be argued that vocal tracts (and not Neanderthals were without language, though you might go into technicalities and rebut that vocal tracts may/may not have sound but they can never have language). Anyway, that's besides the point. If you look at C, D and E, the non-underlined clause they were supplanted by our own species has they as the subject, while C, D and E have vocal tracts as the subject of the first clause. So, C, D and E seem to erroneously suggest that vocal tracts were supplanted by own species. Clearly wrong.

Thanks Ashish,
Can u pls let me know why A is wrong. I was involved in a debate on this Q.( ref my posts in the previous page). Request your inputs....

1)Based on a fossil bird ....modifies Chinese scientists. Is this correct ?
Please post the explanation for this.

2)two actions " began "& "listened ".The former appeared after the latter. So past perfect had listened is required.
C & B are wrong because whom is used (object ) & improper verb tense.
D& E are wrong because of the verb tense

Btw is it ok to have to two past perfect constructions (in this case had file out & had listened ) in the same sentence ?

3)None is singular so was is required .None was more fright than she (was ).

E)Based on a fossil bird found in the Yuan mountains of China,Chinese scientists have shown that bird feathers have appear to have evolved from dinosaur scales well over 100 million years ago. - The extra "have appear to have" is wordy, ungrammatical.

2)Once the audience had filed out,Serge began to wonder who,if anyone ,had listened to his long speech.
A)began to wonder who,if anyone ,had listened to his long speech.
B)began wondering whom,if anyone ,had listened to his long speech.
C)began wondering whom,if anyone , listens to his long speech.
D)began to wonder who,if anyone ,was listening to his long speech.
E)began wondering who,if anyone ,was listening to his long speech.

"filed out" - means that the audience arranged themselves in queues. So the audience was still there. "had filed out" is used to show that the audience filed before he began to wonder. Therefore it should be the past continuous "began to wonder who,if anyone ,was listening to his long speech." = "began to wonder who was listening to his speech".
