1. Although some officials noted that using machines for farming in China costs more than traditional hand cultivation, the mechanization of farming in the village of Long Bow doubled the corn yield while the previous years costs were cut in half.
(A) mechanization of farming in the village of Long Bow doubled the corn yield while the previous years costs were cut in half - Incorrect - This changes the intended meaning and means that two events(mechanization & cost cuts) happened simultaneously, which is not what the author is trying to say.

(B) mechanization of farming in the village of Long Bow doubled the corn yield while cutting costs to half those of the previous year
- Correct -expresses the meaning in a clear and concise manner. Read like this : "Mechanization doubled A while cutting B to half". This clearly shows that Mechanization was responsible for Both(Increase in the yield and cost cuts).

(C) mechanization of farming in the village of Long Bow doubled the corn yield as cost were cut to half of the previous years - Incorrect - This changes the intended meaning. This means that the costs cut contributed to the increase in corn, whereas the author intends to say that the costs reduced as a result.

(D) farming mechanization in the village of Long Bow doubled the corn yield as it cut in half the previous years costs Incorrect - Awkward construction.changing mechanization of farming to farming mechanization is not needed. "IT" is ambiguous and does not have a clear antecedent. "it" could refer back to farming mechanization, village of Long Bow, or the corn yield.

(E) farming mechanization in the village of Long Bow doubled the corn yield while costs were cut to half that of the previous year Incorrect - Awkward construction.changing mechanization of farming to farming mechanization is not needed. "while costs were cut to half" that something else was responsible for the cost cuts when indeed it was the mechanization.

(A) so despised that it was - Correct- This is idiomatic. Correctly expresses the meaning. "it" has a clear antecedent "vegetable farming" and is needed to express the meaning.
(B) so despised to be - Unidiomatic
(C) so despised it had been - Unidiomatic.
(D) despised enough that it was - Unidiomatic.
(E) despised enough as to be - Unidiomatic.

3. Among the emotions on display in the negotiating room were anger for repeatedly raising the issue over and over again and preventing the raw wounds from earlier battles from ever beginning to heal.
(A) were anger for repeatedly raising the issue over and over again and preventing the raw wounds from earlier battles from ever beginning to heal - Were is incorrect. The "were" refers to the anger not "emotions". Should be was.
(B) was anger for repeatedly raising the issue and preventing the raw wounds from earlier battles from ever beginning to heal - CORRECT- Sentence is clear and concise and expresses the meaning clearly.
(C) were anger over repeatedly raising the issue and preventing the raw wounds from earlier battles to begin healing - Were is incorrect. The "were" refers to the anger not "emotions". Should be was.
(D) was anger about the issue, which was raised over and over, and preventing the wounds from earlier battles, still raw, to begin healing - Incorrect. Too many modifiers. Awkward construction.
(E) were anger about the issue, which was raised repeatedly, and preventing the raw wounds from earlier battles to begin to heal - Were is incorrect. The "were" refers to the anger not "emotions". Should be was.

Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes and so were probably without language

(C) The vocal tracts of Neanderthals resembled an ape's
(D) The Neanderthal's vocal tracts resembled the apes
(E) The vocal tracts of the Neanderthals resembled those of the apes

I think its B but i dont know if Ape's (vocal tract) is supposed to be understood

i think its E

but if E were to be correct then the vocal tract would possess no language...which is not the case! it is the neadrethals that lack language

If it would be understood, there would be nothing wrong even with option C.
I think the answer is A i.e nothing is wrong in the statement since here the whole species of ape is being referred to. So ape's wouldn't fit well here.

well c would be wrong for the same reason as D&E.....it; suggests that the vocal tract was without language

A. neanderthals had A vocal tract ... (singular) that resembled those of the apes (plural) .... WRONG
so i am only left with b

Can any of you'll help me this one.

ďźŒa shortcoming that may explain why they were supplanted by our own species

(E) The vocal tracts of the Neanderthals resembled those of the apes

The non underlined portion of the sentence indicates the subject of the sentence to be a plural ( pronoun-they).So the subject either has to be "Neanderthals" or the "vocal tracts".At the same time the second sentence also hints the main subject. ( .....so were probably without language- is it vocal tracts ??? ...no...is it Neanderthals----yes)

IMO : B ( here the vocal tract is compared to ape's ).

OA pls.
well c would be wrong for the same reason as D&E.....it; suggests that the vocal tract was without language

A. neanderthals had A vocal tract ... (singular) that resembled those of the apes (plural) .... WRONG
so i am only left with b

"Apes" is referring here to a general species. So, we shud not take it as a singular or plural. What is the answer anyways?

@kumarsaurav9539:
If that be the case, "Cats", "dogs" etc also refer to a generic species. Are they singular??? I think "apes" can not be considered a collective noun.It is plural.

correct me if i am wrong..!!

OK read the following sentences:

2). He looks like apes.

Which one is wrong and why?
OK read the following sentences:

1. He(singular) looks like an ape (singular).----correct
2. He(singular) looks like an apes (Plural).----Incorrect

The OA is B .... cause i presume that Ape's in this case shows possession...

1. He(singular) looks like an ape (singular).----correct
2. He(singular) looks like an apes (Plural).----Incorrect

I didn't write "looks like an apes". Read the 2nd sentence carefully. U can't just deny it. Even dat is correct. However, we can say that 1st one sounds good while talking, but it doesn't mean that 2nd one is wrong. Singular and plural have nothing to do here bcoz all apes look the same and so a single person can be compared to them. So, it'll not be wrong to write the 2nd sentence.

Even then the sentence "He looks like apes" is wrong.

May be bcoz, it is short and succint. But we can't neglect even option A.
If "apes" is wrong wrt "a vocal tract" which is singular, we should say that even "a vocal tract" is wrong wrt "Neathandrals" which is plural.
