2)Once the audience had filed out,Serge began to wonder who,if anyone ,had listened to his long speech.
A)began to wonder who,if anyone ,had listened to his long speech.
B)began wondering whom,if anyone ,had listened to his long speech.
C)began wondering whom,if anyone , listens to his long speech.
D)began to wonder who,if anyone ,was listening to his long speech.
E)began wondering who,if anyone ,was listening to his long speech.

"filed out" - means that the audience arranged themselves in queues. So the audience was still there. "had filed out" is used to show that the audience filed before he began to wonder. Therefore it should be the past continuous "began to wonder who,if anyone ,was listening to his long speech." = "began to wonder who was listening to his speech".

kindly help!!

1. As envisioned by researchers, commercial farming of lobsters will enable fisheries to sell the shellfish year-round,[ taking advantage of off-season demand], to standardizeits sizes and colors, and to predict sales volume in advance.

Choice B. (taking advantage ... : modifies the previous clause. "to sell,.... to standardize,....and to predict - are parallel and the last item in the list is clearly preceded by an "and")

2. As a result of medical advances, many people that might at one time have died as children of such infections as diphtheria, pneumonia, or rheumatic fever now live well into old age. - "that" is incorrect for people. "at one time" wordy should be "once"

Choice B.

3. Art museums do not usually think of their collections as capital or consider the interest income that would be generated if a portion of the capital would have been invested in another form. - "would have been" is incorrect. Should use the hypothetical subjunctive form "were". We are assuming here.
Choice C.

4. Any medical test will sometimes fail to detect a condition when it is present and indicate that there is one when it is not. - "fail to detect a condition" is correct. "indicate that there is one " causes ambiguity. A more precise form is "and indicate that it is present". "it" correctly refers to the condition and not "medical test." Repeated pronouns refers to the same antecedent unless a new subject is introduced and clearly referred to by the pronoun.

Choice C
1. In the late seventh century, in a dispute over whether the Prophet Muhammads son-in-law, Ali, should carry on as the fourth caliph, Muhammads successor, Islam split into two branches, the Sunnis and the Shiites.

(D) as to whether the fourth caliph, Muhammads successor, is to be the Prophet Muhammads son-in-low, Ali
(E) concerning if the fourth caliph, Muhammads successor, was to be the Prophet Muhammads son-in-law, Ali

Clearly only A & C are idiomatic - "dispute over whether" - correct idiom.

C modifies the meaning of the original sentence "whether Ali was going to carry on and be the 4th prophet" - means that Ali was doing something else before and would go ahead and become the prophet in the future.
The original sentence, however clearly suggests that we are talking about a moral dispute by using "should". And "Ali should carry on as the 4th caliph" means that he was already the 4th caliph when the dispute took place. Not sure about whether "
Ali, the Prophet Muhammads son-in-law" is better than "the Prophet Muhammads son-in-law, Ali". Both seem to indicate the meaning clearly. A is probably the winner since it is concise and clear.

Flatly is an adverb that modifies the verb pack but we need an adjective to modify the noun clothing. So we are left with option B & D. option D is wordy. So option B is the correct option.
