GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

although the first glance gives a 'so ... that' construct, 'that' with a comma before it is almost always wrong in gmat.. also 'that' should be as close to the referrent as possible.. 'that' followed by should is also less preferable.. so option A and option E can be eliminated..

if there is any flaw or grammatical error in my reasoning then plz let me know..

Hey dare2,
in this case, i think the comma before that is for additive which can be removed or rather it is used to give additional information. SO i think the sentence is in continuation and reads so....that... i simply eliminated B,C and D on that part. E used past tense so A is the remaining best choice...
Please let me know the correct answer with explanation for below SC:
According to some experts, carbon dioxide is accumulating in the atmosphere so rapidly, largely because of the burning of fossil fuels, that should the present rate of buildup continue, the global concentration of this poison will double by the end of the next century.
(A) that should the present rate of buildup continue, the global concentration of this poison
(B) should the present rate of buildup continue, the global concentration of this poison
(C)should the present rate of buildup be continued, the global concentration of this poison
(D) the global concentration of this poison, were the present rate of buildup continue,
(E) that the global concentration of this poison, if the present rate of buildup did continue

TIA

hi maverick.. plz post the OA of this question..

hi.. i think there is something wrong wid this question.. tried googling it.. but couldn't get the source nor the OA..

i dont think even the guy, who posted this question, knows the source or the OA..

this question may not b a genuine one at all..

@ maverick -

According to some experts, carbon dioxide is accumulating in the atmosphere so rapidly, largely because of the burning of fossil fuels, that should the present rate of buildup continue, the global concentration of this poison will double by the end of the next century.

That would have been a good option if the sentence was not separated by a comma, in this case *that* does not fit into the bill. So option A and E are out.
Also, option D looks like it could be the answer, but "were the present rate of buildup continue," puts a lot of doubt in my mind, had there been a *to* before continue, it would have been perfect.
Remaining options B and C, Option C is clearly wrong because it does not follow the tenses properly (the occurence of continued), so option B is the nly option left according to me.

I dont think i have explained it quite well, but hope that you get the drift.

My responses:
1. C (reason : The idiom "forbid...to" is almost always a better choice than the more "imperative" form "forbid...from" => "from" + gerund. This expresses the meaning clearly: X forbids Y to do Z).

2. A. (The reason explained by Atrish22 below : You are correct buddy. Striking changes the meaning. So all the options with Striking are discarded...Rest explained below. Thanks Atrish ).

Let us know the OAs with explanations.

IMO
1). C
idiomatic expression X forbids Y to.....
For some question you have to remember the idiomatic expressions.

2). A ( X forbids Y)

B, D -> meaning of strike has changed gerund "striking" is not same as noun "strike"

C -> passive construction

E -> Avoid future tense when meaning is clear in present tense with correct idiomatic usage.

hey xaerooo...
attaboy!! Trust me, with the difficulty level going on these days in real GMAT, 670 is a respectable score. Personal satisfaction is entirely different issue. some genious r not satisfied with 730 at times. But, you have no reason to feel that you screwed up. If i were u, i would probably not think about writing again and rather invest my time on application. When u apply with such fresh scores u have 2 advantages. Good Adcom should consider your this score positively compared to scores 3-5 years old and look into other aspect of your application. I have seen rejections of 740 and acceptances of 660. Again GMAT score is a number to give you and excuse of rejection.
your positive out of this score is feel proud to get 94% in quant, thats a challenging task. nevertheless, if you feel like u can definately do better than this and dissatisfied with your verbal performance then u must write again. there is no better mental satisfaction than achieving what u started. cheers!!

good questions specially 3rd one.
1) A : where is a correct and better usage than while. that rules out C,D,E. B sounds awkward and changes the meaning.
2) I wonder about the source of this question, because appraise and assess has totally different meaning and cant be replaced. Anyway, if i have to pick according to grammer rules than C is my bet.
3) Good parallelism test. My answer is D. System will be ....more efficient than will the system... Use of "if it is implemented" makes E wordy. C is faulty "more efficient in a european city than a system..."
