I got both the below SC's correct, but it was more of an intuition than anything else.

had to search for this one. acc to idiom, i feel the answer is A. it has the idiom- so X that Y.
but i think the answer is C.

2. Not until the Enlightenment, some 200 years ago, had society seriously questioned the right of the state that it could execute its citizens.

(B) did society seriously questioned the right of the state that it could execute

(E) had society seriously questioned whether the state had a right that it could execute

Alright, the difference between had and did:
Did is used to tell the action happened in the past. such as: i did the work.
Had is used before the action that happened prior to other action.
in simpler words, Had is used in a sentence only when the sentence is already in past but we need to talk about an action that happened in further past.
eg-
I had left before you arrived- Correct.
I left before you arrived- Incorrect.
I left before you had arrived- incorrct. (because 'leaving' happened prior 'to arrival')

and usage of Has-
the present perfect tense is used to indicate an action that completed in immediate past.
eg-
John has just won an award for academic excellence.

Hope this clears your confusion.

(C) had society seriously questioned the right of the state for the executing of
(D) did society seriously question the right of the state to execute
(E) had society seriously questioned whether the state had a right that it could execute

First thing to notice is that the above statement refers to the past. Therefore, "did" cannot be used, automatically eliminating option B and D.

(A) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue Has + can = ok. Has + could = wrong

(C) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist to pursue - Correct

(E) has a religious organization so effectively curbed whether a major scientist had the ability that he could be pursuing has & whether cannot be in the same sentence or question together.

BTW, your instinct is nothing but a collective unconscious knowledge of speaking english & grammar over the years. so give yourself credit that you may know more than you think

P.S. Let me know if the answer is wrong. Any feedback is always appreciated.

A is the right answer. C is much clumsy than A. Others use verb forms of 'be' in different tenses which is unwarrented.

Hi,
Complex gerund "surviving" fulfills the firms requirement hence need to be sure of expenditures with research for firm which is noun.

The subject of the main clause (such firms) presumes a prior reference to the firms in question. furthermore, the logical subject of to survive and the logical complement of required should be made explicit. All three demands are met by B, the best choice. Choices A,C and D, with no reference to the firms in question, meet none of these demands. In choice E, the illogical and awkward use of a prepositional phrase (for firm's survival) buries the needed initial reference to firms in a possessive modifier.
and the correct idiom of require is: Require + Noun + to.
Eg- One requires a good Gmat Score to go to a good US business schools.

559) One of Ronald Reagans first acts as President was to rescind President Carters directive that any chemical banned on medical grounds in the United States be prohibited from sale to other countries.

(A) that any chemical banned on medical grounds in the United States be prohibited from sale to other countries
(B) that any chemical be prohibited from sale to other countries that was banned on medical grounds in the United States
(C) prohibiting the sale to other countries of any chemical banned on medical grounds in the United States
(D) prohibiting that any chemical banned on medical grounds in the United States is sold to other countries
(E) that any chemical banned in the United States on medical grounds is prohibited from being sold to other countries

the correct idiom is- prohibits x from doing y.
i.e- Prohibits + from + gerund suggests that A is correct.
I know the OA is C.
but i can't settle with either A or C. both have some problems

563)One view of the economy contends that a large drop in oil prices should eventually lead to lowering interest rates, as well as lowering fears about inflation, a rally in stocks and bonds, and a weakening of the dollar.
(A) lowering interest rates, as well as lowering fears about inflation,
(B) a lowering of interest rates and of fears about inflation,
(C) a lowering of interest rates, along with fears about inflation,
(D) interest rates being lowered, along with fears about inflation,
(E) interest rates and fears about inflation being lowered, with

only C and B maintains the parallelism- a lowering..., a rally....,and a weakening... so A, D and E are out.
Inconsistencies in C - use of 'along with' alienates 'fears about inflation' from 'lowering of interest rates'. The sentence given presents the effects of a large drop in oil prices viz
a lowering of interest rates and fears of inflation
a rally in stock and bonds
a weakening of the dollar

use of 'along with fear of inflation' indicates that 'fears of inflation' is an independent effect but the fact is it's in combination with 'lowering of interest rates' and is best put as a lowering of interest rates and fears of inflation

Option B

Hope this helps.

Hi,

If you place yourself below average, I would suggest you first start working on English grammar basics from your high school books. It really helps. Also get famalarized to US way of English as we are educated in UK way of English. You may start reading US Newspapers on net. Keep solving SC problems from variouos GMAT books in parallel and see how you are scoring on them.

The modifying phrase when...sales is needlessly difficult to understand. the adverb correspoandingly is incorrectly and ambiguously used; using the adjective corresponding to modify increases in sales makes the intended meaning clearer. Unaccompanied is not wrong but not accompanied more effectively expresses the intended negation.
And, Plural subject inventories does not agree with the singular verb leads.

Here is Parallelism with Cause and effect relationship. will explan with examples-

Jack practiced plethora of quant problems, increasing his accuracy from 50% to 90% within three months. ---> Correct.
One might feel that 'practiced' is not parallel to 'increasing'. Be very clear about this distinction; when there is cause-effect relationship, verb for cause and that for effect will have different forms.

Jack practicing plethora of quant problems, increased his accuracy from 50% to 90% within three months.---> Correct.
Again, practicing and increased are different verb forms but the sentence is correct due to cause-effect relation between 'practicing problems' and 'increased accuracy'.

So in this ques, there is cause-effect relationship between "shift-work euqations" reduced sickness, sleeping and fatigue And raising production efficieny. that is why C.

(C) the means of reducing for comprehending the nearly infinite number
(D) the means that reduces, in order to comprehend, the nearly infinite amount

677) Sunspots, vortices of gas associated with strong electromagnetic activity, are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun but have never been sighted on the Suns poles or equator.
(A) are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun but have never been sighted on

(B) are visible as dark spots that never have been sighted on the surface of the Sun... the modifying clause that never...Sun distorts the meaning of the sentence; also, without punctuation, the phrase on the surface of the Sun...the Sun's poles or equator is ungrammatical and makes no sense.

(C) appear on the surface of the Sun as dark spots although never sighted at....Although typically introduces a subordinate clause, which has a subject and a verb, but here there is no subject and sighted is not a complete verb

(D) appear as dark spots on the surface of the Sun, although never having been sighted at....same as C and have never been sighted is not a complete verb.

(E) appear as dark spots on the Suns surface, which have never been sighted on... the phrasing makes the sentence somewhat awkward and unclear.

The correct parallel structure in the original sentence emphasizes the contrast between where sunspots are found (are visible...Sun) and where they are not (have never been sighted....equator). Sunspots is the subject of the sentence; are is the verb of the first part of the contrast, and have never been sighted is the verb of the second. (The adjective visible is a complement and is parallel to the past participle sighted.) Both parts of the sentence conclude with phrases indicating location. The contrast itself is indicated by the conjuction but.

684) That the new managing editor rose from the publications soft news sections to a leadership position is more of a landmark in the industry than her being a woman.
(A) her being a woman
(B) being a woman is
(C) her womanhood
(D) that she was a woman
(E) that she is a woman

A, B - Being is unnecessary - eliminate.
C - "her" apparently refers to the "new managing editor". Try plugging in the words "new managing editor" instead of her and see if the statement makes sense. So you get ".... industry than new managing editor womanhood". Doesn't fit.. Eliminate.

Now, D and E maintain parallelism and each could be right depending on which tense is used in the rest of the sentence. The part "leadership position is" indicates that the present tense needs to be used. Hence eliminate D.

E it is!

(C) the means of reducing for comprehending the nearly infinite number
(D) the means that reduces, in order to comprehend, the nearly infinite amount
(E) the means for reducing in order to comprehend the nearly infinite amount

Stimuli is countable therefore number.
Use number for Countable nouns.
and Amount for Uncountable nouns.

Hope this clears the confusion.

(A) with having had
(B) for its having
(C) to have had
(D) for having
(E) in that it had

Choice A is best. In this sentence, where credit(ed) is used as a verb, the idiom in English is to credit something with having had some effect. Thus only choice A is idiomatic. Both for (in B and D) and to (in C) can be used idiomatically when credit is a noun, as in "Picasso gave credit to African art for having had a strong influence on his work." the verb form having had is used appropriately in choice A to indicate action that occurred prior to action expressed in the simple past tense-- that is to indicate that African art had influenced Picasso before he credited it with having done so.

I agree with you on this one. but all the choices which have 'Compared to' also have 'being', a word always avoided on Gmat. and out of A and E. only A is not wordy and suits well. but still i'm not clear. and that is why i don't the right answer.
I think 1000SC is not a good source to study from and would recommend to avoid its ques since it almost always have ambiguity in the ques and even GMAC is against the material.
