Had the sentence intended to talk about the suffering of the families then B would have been the correct answer, giving two factors about the suffering of families: A) finicially hard-hit and B) rising rental rates, then the usage of furthermore is apt.

But sentence intends to say: middle class families don't qualify for the buying homes yet rising rental rates force them ... etc
that is why Answer should be C.

Hope this clears your doubt.

We use past perfect tense when we need to show that some event was already over
before a certain point of time in the past.

so A, B, E are out. C is out as it violates parallelism.

He was living..., watching..., facing....

Hi,

you could get to the answer also by mugging up some rules which are really helpful.

Independent clause(I): A stand alone sentence. ex: Ex: I went to store (I);
Independent Marker(IM): A connecting word used at the beginning of an independent clause.
Example: Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz; however, it was hard to concentrate because of the noise. (IM)
Examples of IM:also, consequently, furthermore, however, moreover, nevertheless, and therefore
Dependent Marker: A dependent marker word is a word added to the beginning of an independent clause that makes it into a dependent clause.
Example: When Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz, it was very noisy. (DM)--> when is the DM.
EXAMPLES:after, although, as, as if, because, before, even if, even though, if, in order to, since, though, unless, until, whatever, when, whenever, whether, and while
Conjunction: connecting words at the beginning of an independent clause.
Example: Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz, but it was hard to concentrate because of the noise. (CC)

Hi,

you could get to the answer also by mugging up some rules which are really helpful.

Dependent CLAUSE (D): A sentence that cannot stand alone. ex: Ex: When I went to store... (D);
Independent clause(I): A stand alone sentence. ex: Ex: I went to store (I);
Independent Marker(IM): A connecting word used at the beginning of an independent clause.
(CC)
EXAMPLES:and, but, for, or, nor, so, and yet.
Rules:
1.
or
eX: when I went to the store, I didnt buy a bread
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

In your case option B had furthermore(IM) after ',' which was wrong it should come after ';'(rule 5).

Option C was ok rule(4)

Hope this Helps

(A) Formulas for cash flow and the ratio of debt to equity do not apply to new small businesses in the same way as they do to established big businesses, because they are growing and are seldom in equilibrium.
(B) Because they are growing and are seldom in equilibrium, formulas for cash flow and the ratio of debt to equity do not apply to new small businesses in the same way as they do to established big businesses.

(D) Because new small businesses are growing and are seldom in equilibrium, formulas for cash flow and the ratio of debt to equity do not apply to them in the same way as to established big businesses.
(E) New small businesses are not subject to the applicability of formulas for cash flow and the ratio of debt to equity in the same way as established big businesses, because they are growing and are seldom in equilibrium.

My answers are in RED.

Explanations :

1. Tense and logic is only right in option C
2. 'it' is incorrect as the subject is charter vacations. Among A, B & C, B is the most appropriate.
3. C, D & E can be immediately eliminated. Between A and B, B is more appropriate. When 'even if' is used, we need a subject in the clause following 'even if', but there is no subject. Therefore I choose B
4. Appropriate usage of modifier. The remaining options do not have correct modifier.

Cheers !!

Q. Bipedal dinosaurs' standing posture differs from virtually every visual depiction of them created before the 1970s, when scientists reevaluated their assumptions about tripod-style balance.

(A) Bipedal dinosaurs' standing posture differs from

(B) Bipedal dinosaurs stood in a posture that differs from

(C) Bipedal dinosaurs exhibited standing postures that differ from those of
(D) The standing posture of bipedal dinosaurs differs from

(E) The characteristics of bipedal dinosaurs' standing posture differ from those of

Answer: C
The words "differ from" signal that there is a comparison. In this case, the comparison is between the actual posture of dinosaurs and the posture as depicted by certain images. As written, the sentence is incorrect: it compares the actual standing posture with "every visual depiction." We can't compare a posture with a picture as those are unlike things.
Choice (B) makes the same mistake, comparing a posture with pictures. (C) makes a proper comparison between "standing postures" and "those of." The word "those" takes the place of "standing postures," so we're comparing the actual standing postures with the standing postures as depicted. (D) makes the same mistake as (A) and (B). (E) is complicated but is yet another comparison error. It compares characteristics of standing posture with "those" (characteristics) of visual depictions. Those are different things, so (C) must be correct.

(B) however, caffeine did not seem to bother
(C) however, caffeine did not seem to have bothered
(D) furthermore, caffeine did not seem to have bothered
(E) in addition, caffeine did not seem to bother

confused about the use of however/furthermore and seem to/seem to have

ANswer must be (C).....as however always begins a negative or opposite opinion..and here we see that Balzac died of Caffeine poisoning while Johnson was not affected......Caffeine can bother itself...it can always seem to have bothered...

whats the OA?

OA is B this q. is from SC1000
explanation as given : seem to have ..... intend that johnson had 25 cups of coffee at 1 time which did not bother him seem to intend that johnson was used to have 25 cup of coffee at one time and this habbit did not bother him.

My choice is B.
The two sentences have contradiction. Furthermore is supporting the first sentence while sense is opposite. So However is more appropriate. Now Choices left are B and C.
Seem always comes with indefinite. Seem to have bothered is altering the meaning. Hence right one left is B.

i agree...Seem precedes an Adjective...while seem to have can be used before a noun or a noun phrase....so seem to have bothered is incorrect....it could have been..seem to be bothered...thats the correct phrase....

missed an important point...
