A cost associated with B costs associated with C costs arising from D cost of E costs of
Explanation-
The correct option must offer a noun that agrees in number with the plural verb are, the second-to-last word in the sentence, to produce the grammatical sequence costs....are prohibitive. Also, the best answer, will use the preposition with to complete the parallel construction costs associated with upgrading....and with the development....Choice B, the best answer,is the only option that meets both requirements.
The rising of costs of data-processing operations at many financial institutions has created a growing opportunity for independent companies to provide these services more efficiently and at lower cost. (A) The rising of costs (B) Rising costs (C) The rising cost (D) Because the rising cost (E) Because of rising costs Explanation-
The best answer is C. Choice A in unidiomatic. and B costs...has lack of subject-verb agreement. Choices D and E produce sentence fragments since Because makes the clause subordinate rather than independent.
The issue is not only of cost/costs but of Subject-Verb Agreement. Check: What is the Verb of Cost? Is the Verb Plural or Singluar?

I feel "of" should be some how there before fossil fuels, and that is the only reason I feel B should be the answer.
Of course option C doesn't look the good contender because of brevity(carbon dioxide in the atmosphere /atmospheric carbon dioxide ) and presense of "would" in non-under line part.
Contrary to earlier conjectures, it may be that increased atmospheric carbon dioxide as a result of burning fossil fuels would cool the globe by reducing the amount of solar energy absorbed by snow.
A. increased atmospheric carbon dioxide as a result of burning
B. increased atmospheric carbon dioxide resulting from the combustion of
C. increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere ..................
Here is what I got from net,but it don't make lot of sense to me.
"as a result of" usually perceded by a verb...here are some examples I googled on..
1 other grass species and forbs that occurred(verb) as a result of burning
2 Protocol is an effort to address the impact ( verb) to the environment as a result of burning fossil fuels i.e impact .. as a result of...
In choice A "as a result of" is perceded by a noun "increased(PARTICIPLE---> ADJ) CO2 as a result of" does not make sense. If we can rewrite it "increase(verb) in CO2 as a result of" then it would have been correct.
On the other hand "resulting from" can be perceded by noun . as it is case in B. so b is the correct answer.

Choices A,B and C incorrectly use the adjective form seeming to modify the participal adjective unlimited. B also uses the unidiomatic Preposition to instead of the correct at after targeted, while C violates sense by having all the antibodies specifically targeted at an, that is one, invading microbe or substance. Choice D correctly uses seemingly, but it repeats B's incorrect use of trageted to and C's illogical all...specifically. Only E, the best choice, correctly uses the form seemingly to modify unlimited the correct preposition at with targeted, and the logically correct each, which links the specific antibodies to specific microbes or substances.

Dude, you are looking for wrong hints: added/adding! the issue over is Idiom. The correct idiom is "estimated to be" and that is why A is the answer. Rest all choices violates it and use unidimoatic "estimated that..."
You are correct "estimated to be" is correct IDIOM ,but it is not the end of story.
(A) During the 1980's approximately $50 billion in private investment capital is estimated to have left Mexico and added
1)Estimation was done for 1980 and not in 1980 therefore both the option A and B (During the 1980's ....) are incorrect .
2)"and" is used here as a conjunction which wrongly joins a clause and a phrase. 3)"and" should be used here as a relative pronoun which appropriately refers to the antecedent.
Moreover,As 2 actions are not separate so using 'adding' makes sense.
Therefore even though option D being unattractive is the correct option.
Hi Sish-in, I agree with the answer in number 1 and 3 but I got A for number 2. Can you provide the explanation why "Contrary to" is wrong?
Hi Neha, I got this wrong too. Below is what I got from some forum which makes sense. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALL B,C,D AND E ARE INCORRECT as all have similar usage as UNLIKE that is UNLIKE x,y here Y coming after the comma must be parallel to X. similarly in other constructions. but victors are not parallel to popular beliefs. So, only A is correct. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I also found that in almost all the SC sentences, when ever there is a talk of belief or opinionContrary to is being used. Contrary to popular opinion, the movement toward a service economy is leading neither to lower standards of living, more of an unequal distribution of income, or displacing the physical production of goods. Contrary to earlier conjectures, it may be that increased atmospheric carbon dioxide as a result of burning fossil fuels would cool the globe by reducing the amount of solar energy absorbed by snow. Hope this helps

added describes another action (which is logically incorrect in this case)

1. For many people, household labor remains demanding even if able to afford household appliances their grandparents would find a miracle. (A) even if able to afford household appliances their grandparents would find a miracle (B) despite being able to afford household appliances their grandparents would find a miracle
(C)even if they can afford household appliances their grandparents would have found miraculous."would have" is required.
(D) although they could afford household appliances their grandparents would find miraculous "would have" missing
(E) even if they are able to afford household appliances which would have been a miracle to their grandparents. "which" Changes meaning. It ambiguosly pointing to "appliances" or "affordability" + wordy
The sentence wants to say that the 'appliances' are supposed to be seen as miraculous instead of the 'affording'
Also, with "household labor remains", "they can" looks consistent as opposed to "they could"
Here we are comparing something as if it is a miracle and "miraculous" is one word to say all that.

I googled for this answer, this particular ques has lots of confusion. Ple read Stacey Koprince's reply in the following link : It's the best explanation and removes all the confusion.

(D) Because new small businesses are growing and are seldom in equilibrium, formulas for cash flow and the ratio of debt to equity do not apply to them in the same way as to established big businesses.
(E) New small businesses are not subject to the applicability of formulas for cash flow and the ratio of debt to equity in the same way as established big businesses, because they are growing and are seldom in equilibrium. Explanation-
In A, they after because is ambiguous; it seems illogically to refer to Formulas because they and Formulas are each the grammatical sunject of a clause and because the previous they refers to Formulas. In A and B, do not apply to...in the same way as they do to is wordy and awkward. D, the best choice sayd, more concisely in the same way as to. Also in B, because they refers to formulas, the intoductory clause states confusedly that the formulas are growing. In C and E, subject to the applicablility of.... is wordy, awkward, and imprecise; furthermore, are is preferable either before or after established big businesses to complete the comparison. Finally, the referent of they is not immediately clear in E.
Answers in Blue. There is confusion for ques 3. will check again and then post answer with explanation.

Hi All,
My answers are 1. C 2. E 3. E 4. D
FOr 1 and 4, Neha's expalnation is enough. For #2, Here we have a special use of it. "it originally seemed they would". When seem comes with future sense, it is always better to use with it would.
#3: - It needs a relation between damange claims and Price. That relation can be shown with using a verb or connecting noun.
(A) even if :- No connection (B) despite being :- wrong (C) even if they are :- It needs singular (D) although they may be :- It needs singular (E) even if remaining :- Correct
Related to question 2, ======================= 2 For many travelers, charter vacations often turn out to cost considerably more than they originally seemed. (A) they originally seemed (B) they originally seem to (C) they seemingly would cost originally (D) it seemed originally (E) it originally seemed they would =======================
It seems that the sentance here is saying that "often turn out to cost...". I am confused in between (B) they originally seem to and (E). We are talking here about the cost of the charter vacations(Plural) and not simply cost. So the answer should start with they as in options (B) but (E) also looks good.
------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conjugation of 'To Cost' Base Form:CostPast Simple:CostPast Participle:Cost3rd Person Singular:CostsPresent Participle/Gerund:Costing
eg:- it costs five dollars.
Hi Sid,
Yes, 'Cost' is Singular and 'Costs' is Plural. And there is no fixed rule that in Sc ques we can only have singular form of Cost.
Costs: Your costs are the total amount of money you spend over a period of time in order to make or produce something, or continue an activity : Examples: 1) Our costs have doubled over the last five years as a result of the incease in oil prices. 2) It costs five dollars.
Cost- The Cost of something is the amount of money you must pay to buy, do, make or use it: Examples: 1) The cost of having the car repaired was $340. 2) The cost of keeping a person in prison for a year is enormous. 3) I'll be happy to pay the cost of the postage. 4) In London, the cost of living is very high.
Cost is used as a Noun and Verb.
Noun: cost (plural costs)
Amount of money time, etc. that is required or used.
A negative consequence or loss that occurs or is required to occur.
Examples: 1) The cost for this car is $10000. Here, COST is used as a NOUN, so it can be SINGULAR/PLURAL that depends upon the context.
2) While large banks can afford to maintain their own data-processing operations, many smaller regional and community banks are finding that the costs associated with upgrading data-processing equipment and with the development and maintenance of new products and technical staff are prohibitive.
3) The rising of cost (noun) of data-processing operations at many financial institutions has created a growing opportunity for independent companies to provide these services more efficiently and at lower cost(noun) Verb: to cost (third-person singular simple presentcosts, present participlecosting, simple past and past participlecost)
1. To incur a charge, a price
Examples:
1) New leaks caused by the torrential rain have damaged the historic Henson House, significantly compounding the effects of neglect, which already cost the restoration fund more than $70,000.
Hope this clears your doubt. If anything is not clear.do ask.
