1) The tycoon contributed more to the candidate's campaign than anyone else in the industry.
a. The tycoon contributed more to the candidate's campaign than did anyone else in industry.
b. The tycoon contributed more to the candidate's campaign than anyone else did in the the industry.

I think its all a matter of parallelism. We need to compare the two actions. We need to compare the action of contributing. Hence according to me the correct answer will be (A). Option (B) incorrectly compares the tycoon's action of contributing with "anyone else". Please correct me if I am wrong. :)

Here again parallelism comes into play. We need to compare the "sound" of the concert with the "sound" of grinding of metal. "sound" is implicit here. Without the use of "the", we would be comparing the action "grinding" with the "concert".

Why do you think B does not compare actions correctly?

Here is one example from same manhattan exercise

The blue dress looks more flattering on you than the red one.
a. The blue dress looks more flattering on you than does the red one.
b. The blue dress looks more flattering on you than the red one does.

Here again, choice (a) seems to be correct, but in fact choice (b) is correct.

Hope you got my confusion.

Very good question here. I also surely would have got this one wrong.

After thinking for some time I think I can see slight differences between the two.

In the first case, "contributed" is clearly an action performed by the tycoon and the others and we have to compare how much was contributed.

In this case, dresses do not perform any actions per se, "looks" is not really an action but a property of the dresses. Hence in this case, the dresses need to be compared.
OG 10, SC. Qs. 55:
A recent study has found that within the past few years, many doctors had elected early retirement rather than face the threats the threats of lawsuits and the rising costs of malpractice insurance.
(A)
(B)
(C)
(D) have elected to retire early rather than facing
(E) have elected to retire early rather than face

My Qs is,

Does this sentence fall into Subjunctive Mood category?

I ask this because then we can quickly deduce, have elected because of Present Perfect tense and also deduce face rather than facing as it is a property of sentences with subjective mood that word be in infinitive form! Hence we have the answer! J

Hi!
Subjunctive shows Uncertainty / expresses HPDR (ie Hope, Proposal, Desire, Request)

In this sentence Doctors 'have elected' ie the action has been performed and there is no uncertainty.
I think if the sentence would have been ' A recent study has found that within the past few years, many doctors have proposed / desired / recommended / preferred .... ' then your logic would have been quite right.

My understanding is based solely on Manhattan SC guide. Pls correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers

well, have elected because it was their desired...so i think this falls under subjunctive category...

another reason, we cant select option with "facing" here because it is not parallelism.

Is it B, B, D?

(B) flat, and so elaborate closet facilities were unnecessary
(C) flatly, and so there was no necessity for elaborate closet facilities
(D) flat, there being no necessity for elaborate closet facilities

"flatly" is supposed to modified the verb "packed". Hence we need the adverb "flatly". Hence (B) and (D) are out.

(A) is wrong. The tense "that would" doesnt sound correct.
(B) also sounds wrong with respect to the tense of "would have on".
(C) "for investigating" sounds incorrect.
(E) sounds too wordy.
Hence (D).
