GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Look at this sentence as Dr. Sayre's Lecture .......................that illustrates...............
Now since the Dr. Sayre's lecture is singular, illustrates is right choice. So C and D are out.
E changes the meaning of the sentence .
Now concentrate on this part "episodes in the relations between nations".
This construction is not correct.
It should be "episodes in the relation of one nation with another that illustrates"

I disagree.....
Dr. Sayres lecture recounted several little-known episodes.......that illustrate....is correct..!
so answer shd be c...

Can anyone please explain why answer is not B but A

I found some explanation in this thread for this but wasn't convinced...

In astronomy the term red shift denotes the extent to which light from a distant galaxy has been shifted toward the red, or long-wave, end of the light spectrum by the rapid motion of the galaxy away from the Earth.
(A) to which light from a distant galaxy has been shifted
(B) to which light from a distant galaxy has shifted
(C) that light from a distant galaxy has been shifted
(D) of light from a distant galaxy shifting
(E) of the shift of light from a distant galaxy

its "a" the sentence shows external influence

I agree... A sounds correct. notice 'by the rapid motion of the galaxy away from the Earth.' at the end. Act 'of shifting' is effect of an external agent.

e.g.
I have been advised by my parents. Vs I have advised by my parents.

a)A thoroughly frightened child was seen by her cowering in the corner of the room
b)Cowering in the corner of the room a thoroughly frightened child was seen by her
c)She, saw covering in the corner of the room, a thoroughly frightened child.
d)A thoroughly frightened child, cowering in the corner of the room was seen by her.
e)She saw a thoroughly frightened child who was cowering in the corner of the room.
my take
option (E)

C is close,but has a misplaced comma..

Two ways to correct the original sentence

1. A thoroughly frightened child, cowering in the corner of the room, was seen by her.
2. She saw a thoroughly frightened child who was cowering in the corner of the room.

'cowering in the coerner of the room' has to refer to 'frightened child' all other sentences result in wrong meaning. E does that by using relative pronoun 'Who' which clearly refers back to Child.

D is close but a comma after '...of the room' is missing and is in passive voice. So E is the best.

Hi ....can someone help me with this...

The market for recycled commodities like aluminum and other metals remain strong despite economic changes in the recycling industry.

commodities like aluminum and other metals remain
commodities like those of aluminum and other metals are remaining
commodities such as aluminum and other metals remains
commodities, such as aluminum and other metals, remain
commodities, like the commodities of aluminum and other metals, remains

I'll go with C.

'The Market' is singular noun, so verb has to be 'remains'. that eliminates A, B, D.

Such as makes it clear that Aluminum and other metals are commodities. meaning 'for example'.

E doesn't add any value, it instead uses wordy phrase 'like the commodities of aluminum and other metals'
such as when you are giving examples
but here AL is not commodity, Al and Ferrous products could be commodities
hence cant be C and D.
market (singular)for....remain(s)
can be C or E

IMO E.

Can anyone please explain subjunctive with an example !!

Hi,

I remember coming across this q in some test.
The answer as per that test is C.

The reason provided: this is a sentence which involves suspense and as it describes about the child; the child should come last in the sentence.

Adarsh.

Let's look at option C:

c)She, saw covering in the corner of the room, a thoroughly frightened child.

info between two commas is supposed to give additional info about the word preceding first comma. i.e. She. Sentence has to give correct meaning even after omitting this sentence, which in this case reads 'She a thoroughly frightened child'. sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?

yeah Vikas, I too had the same doubts regarding this option; as I said thats the answer given, though I am not thoroughly convinced.

Can anyone please explain subjunctive with an example !!

Priyan,

A good way of thinking about the subjunctive is that it comes up on the GMAT in three cases: COMMAND words, REQUEST words, and HYPOTHETICALS.

If you limit your use to these three cases and understand these cases clearly, subjunctive is an easy and fast rule to use.

Common GMAT COMMANDs are words such as insist, order, demand, and mandate
Common GMAT REQUESTs are ask or request.
Common GMAT HYPOTHETICALs are believe, estimate, and suggest.

For each case the use is the same:

First, remember: when issuing a command, making a request or stating a hypothetical do NOT say "should." Common GMAT trick is to add should later.

Second, there are two ways of issuing a command, making a request or stating a hypothetical

Either:
COMMAND that do

or:
COMMAND to do .

This works the same way with a request.
Either:
REQUEST that do

or:
REQUEST to do .

And still the same for the hypothetical.
Either:
Believe that will do/be

or:
Believe to be .
Note: that for the hypothetical the verb is usually be and not an action verb.

I hope this helps.

Success,

Hashim
