Dr. Sayres lecture recounted several little-known episodes in the relations between nations that illustrates what is wrong with alliances and treaties that do not have popular support.

(A) relations between nations that illustrates
(B) relation of one nation with another that illustrates
(C) relations between nations that illustrate
(D) relation of one nation with another and illustrate
(E) relations of nations that illustrates

Official Answer: B

Between is wrong usage for more than two things, so A, C are out. so it comes down to B, D or E. in D and unnecessarily introduces clause. Relations of nations that introduces is wrong because 'that illustrates' doesn't agree with episodes...leaving us with B.

Dr. Sayres lecture recounted several little-known episodes in the relations between nations that illustrates what is wrong with alliances and treaties that do not have popular support.

(A) relations between nations that illustrates
(B) relation of one nation with another that illustrates
(C) relations between nations that illustrate
(D) relation of one nation with another and illustrate
(E) relations of nations that illustrates

Official Answer: B

Look at this sentence as Dr. Sayre's Lecture .......................that illustrates...............
Now since the Dr. Sayre's lecture is singular, illustrates is right choice. So C and D are out.
E changes the meaning of the sentence .
Now concentrate on this part "episodes in the relations between nations".
This construction is not correct.
It should be "episodes in the relation of one nation with another that illustrates"

Can anyone help me out:

Which is an appropriate usage?
1. less number of players .........
2. fewer number of players .........
3. reduced number of players .......

I think 'fewer number of players...' is wrong, becoz 'fewer' is used for a number, and 'number of players' is an amount as in '12 is less than 13'. So, 'fewer players' rather than 'fewer number of players' would make sense.

What would u say?

*scratching head*

1. less number ? Err.. there doesn't seem to be a comparitive quality associated to the phrase, something that I believe that the original phrase intends to convey.
2. fewer number of players ? 'fewer' and 'number' seems to indicate redundancy. Like you said, 'fewer players' scores on brevity and conveys the meaning concisely.
3. reduced numer ? Nay, this is not a statistical figure of net profit or per-capita income that can be reduced.

'fewer players' for me

hey dude, lemme come to the point thru examples.

1. Due to the rigorous selection process, less number of players are selected than were expected
*I don't have any qualms abt it though*

2. NA- it's clear

3. The incessant rain has resulted in reduced number of visitors

I even saw a few sentences that look like "lower number of sth....". Am confused as to which is suitable when.

Clear B
"little polar ice" is wrong Usage

'little polar ice' is indeed right. What 'c' lacks is a correct parallel structure. It has to start with 'is', because in this sentence the implicit parallel verb, which is understood when nothing is mentioned, is 'are' which is wrong (temperatures are so cold and the ice cap (are is taken) so reflective).

As we gotta choose b/w 'b' and 'c': 'b' should be the right answer

Few queries-
1. when the ica cap is reflective , it is followed by that or so to describe how much.
2. if we use so reflective then that is used to show the degree of reflective , isnt it wrong?
3 what does were it do so indicates?
I also think 1 is the correct option. But the OA is 4.
Can anyone expln whether the OA is right or not?

The word -increasingly neglect. How can you increasingly neglect a thing?either you neglect it or accept it , thats why 4 is the right answer
