Nitiman ...Official answers please....
Could someone explain the following OG question to me.

160. While some propose to combat widespread illegal copying of computer programs by attempting to change people's attitudes toward pirating, others by suggesting reducing software prices to decrease the incentive for pirating, and still others by calling for the prosecution of those who copy software illegally.
(A) by suggesting reducing software prices to decrease the incentive for pirating, and still others by calling
(B) by suggesting the reduction of software prices to decrease the incentive for pirating, and still others call
(C) suggest the reduction of software prices for decreasing the incentive for pirating, and still others call
(D) suggest the reduction of software prices to decrease the incentive for pirating, and still others by calling
(E) suggest reducing software prices to decrease the incentive for pirating, and still others are calling

here is OG's explanation
Answer to Question
Choice E, the best answer, uses constructions that are parallel to some propose', others suggest. . . , and still others are calling ....

How is "some propose, others suggest" .. parallel with "and still others are calling"? Shouldn't it be "and still others call"?

Thanks guys.

Yes the explanations is correct....and the answer should be E ....i have a reason for this :

While some propose ......by attempting.............others combat.........suggest reducing software prices to decrease the incentive for pirating, and still others are calling

If you see the above line i wrote..the skeleton of which looks parallel such as
A propose by attempting
B Suggest reducing
C are calling

Note that are in the last line above is a verb like propose and suggest in the above two lines above the last line.

So propose suggest and are are all verbs and so are parallel.

Still doubtful lemme know !

Point to be noted. Is there any guideline/thumbrule on the forum for time between posting the Q & giving away the OA? Can we come up with one?

Rohit.

Yes ROHIT ,
I also believe that the people are simply interested in posting questions.in fact the purpose must be the learning.so its better that the particular thread junta discuss the problems ,post OA and proceed to next problem

i cannot comment on the authenticity of the answers mentioned in any other forums. Are they not any official answers for these questions ?

A word of caution : The answers reflected in the 1000 SC document are claimed to be not completely correct. Some are devious as indicated in many forums such as Testmagic etc.

But i welcome more opinions about this federal papers since from what i understand i see it as a collective noun which although may be used as a singular or plural, is here used as a singular. The indications for the same are given in the same sentence such as : a strong defence , a body etc etc.....

So i still go with A .

Appreciate any further contradictory explanations so that we can surpass the confusions !

The Olympic Games helped to keep peace among the pugnacious states of the Greek world in that a sacred truce was proclaimed during the festival's month.

(A) Same
(B) world, proclaiming a sacred truce during the festival's month
(C) world when they proclaimed a sacred truce for the festival month
(D) world, for a sacred truce was proclaimed during the month of the festival
(E) world by proclamation of a sacred truce that was for the month of the festival

I am confused between B and D.

(A) Same

(D) world, for a sacred truce was proclaimed during the month of the festival
(E) world by proclamation of a sacred truce that was for the month of the festival

I am confused between B and D.

Correct answer is C
The original sentence suffers from lack of parallelism b/w helped & proclaiming, also in that a sacred truce is wordy & unidiomatic.
The Olympic Games helped...here the verb is in simple past tense, which requires the verb in the second half of the sentence to be in past.. proclaimed in C corrects this error.
They in C correctly indicates who proclaimed the truce. Also C is compact & concise
In B proclaiming is not parallel with helped
In D for a sacred truce is unidiomatic.
E is wordy

prateek,

In C they is ambiguous ..

prateek,

In C they is ambiguous ..

They clearly represent Olympic games & not pugnacious states...

Right u got the point !! in the sentence the verb proclaimed refers to sacred truce not to the olympic games. In D .. the S-V agreement is followed..

correct me if i m wrong

Arch......i was not really convinced with the explanation thrown in by the MGMAT staff...

but my 2 cents :

The Olympic Games helped to keep peace among the pugnacious states of the Greek world in that a sacred truce was proclaimed during the festival's month.

(A) Same
(B) world, proclaiming a sacred truce during the festival's month
(C) world when they proclaimed a sacred truce for the festival month
(D) world, for a sacred truce was proclaimed during the month of the festival
(E) world by proclamation of a sacred truce that was for the month of the festival

First thing : Stop using festival's month.....it should always me the month of the festival...

Eg: leg of the table and not table's leg but Jack's coat is correct since the possesive of human being is always correct...

this would eliminate options : A,B,C.

When we come to E : is wordy and not pleasant to my ears....

Left with D , the contruction of which is brilliant enough . As mentioned somewhr earlier...for a sacred truce etc etc doesnt make use of any idiom and it is a valid sentence construction !

can ny1 help me with gettn out these 2 SC problms??? plz giv full explanaton....thnx

Q1:
Possible long-term consequences of the greenhouse effect, the gradual warming of the Earths climate, may include melting the polar ice caps and a rising sea level.
A. may include melting the polar ice caps and a rising sea level
B. may include the melting of polar ice caps and the rising sea level
C. may include polar ice caps that are melting and sea levels that are rising
D. include melting the polar ice caps and sea levels that are rising
E. include melting of the polar ice caps and a rise in sea level

Q2:
Antarctica receives more solar radiation than does any other place on Earth, yet the temperatures are so cold and the ice cap is reflective, so that little polar ice melts during the summer; otherwise, the water levels of the oceans would rise 250 feet and engulf most of the worlds great cities.
A. is reflective, so that little polar ice melts during the summer; otherwise,
B. is so reflective that little of the polar ice melts during the summer; were it to do so,
C. so reflective that little polar ice melts during the summer, or else
D. reflective, so that little of the polar ice melts during the summer, or
E. reflects so that little of the polar ice melts during the summer; if it did

Q1 My take is E
Exp- A = We are looking at the consequences but the sentence give us the feeling of some action to be performed.i.e melting the polar ice... it should always be melting of ice
B = rising sea level is an issue here..should be a rise in sea level.
C = consequence can never be "polar ice" and "sea water"
D = same as A
E = correct choice

Q2 May take is B
Exp- "So that " phrase is incorrect. The littel melting of ice is consequence of ice being reflective not the reason
A,D and E out.

"littel of " is better phrase.
Thus B is the answer

Please post the OA soon.

Q1: B

I'm confused between B and C, but clauses in C seem unnecessary here. So I'll go with B.

Q2: C
Parallel construction. Both sides joined by AND should be parallel. and 'So...that' construction.

Temperatures are so cold
The ice cap is so reflective.

e.g. I was so scared that I ran away from the scene.

I disagree here, Preposition can't be used to join clauses, clause has to be introduced by proper subordinate conjunction , which D does by using 'for'.
