I have a question here.. In the above sentence, if Team is singular then what does "their" in original sentence modify?
To clarify this, what I understand is..
we eliminate D because "they" is not required. "streamed", "donned" and "joined" are parallel.
In original sentence and in E ("..their uniforms.." and "..their first practice.."), "their" is used for Team which shows that collective noun Team in this context refers to each member of the team. This is logical because had it been "..donned its uniform..", it would have shown that the whole team donned just a single uniform. But actually it should refer to uniform of each team member. Hence "..donned their uniforms.."
Therefor, I think collective nouns can be used as either plural or singular depending on the usage and meaning.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Hi bro,
what you said is correct. "their" refers to the individuals, and hence it is used. though my bet is that Collective nouns are always singular and "they" here is not all required. Haven't come across any book stating "the usage of collective noun depends on its usage and meaning"

Yeah, even I dint come across this concept in any book, but it is mentioned in psahil's notes. It says: With collective nouns, use a singular/plural verb depending on whether you want to emphasize on a single group or its individual members.
- All of the class is/are here - Half of my family lives/live in Canada
Team is a collective noun and can be singular or plural depending upon the rest of the sentence following the noun.
-then the question on team is given-
So this much information is given in the notes. Although manhattan is definitely correct, this also seems logical.
While browsing through some threads, got to read that you are writing gmat next month. When is the d-day? and for which session you are applying?

Not next month, postponed to 2nd week of Dec. was on work assignment to Uk hence i got bit off track now. need to pace up the prep. applying for Fall'09. how bout you?
Fellows, I guess singularity or plurality of collective nouns can only be judged according to the context they are used in. Manhattac SC says the same. They actually have a sentence or two which highlights the same.
For this question, in particular, author makes it easy by giving us "they" or "their" so we dont really need to check on pronoun number.
Well let me clear your confusion. A ,D- uses correspondingly, which is an adverb. we know that adverb can modify verb, verb phrase, adjective and another adverb. here in this case it modifies "increase in sales" which is a noun phrase. hence we can eliminate that..
"when" is used as an instance of time. Hence the usage of "when" is wrong here. eliminate a,b,c
Answer is E - corresponding is an adjective and correctly modifies noun phrase "increase in sales"
Hope this helps
I will stick with E too. Idiomatic and concise, although could anyone explain the original point raised here. Use of "can" in the main clause wit "if" in subordinate?
It is well known in the supermarket industry that how items are placed on shelves and the frequency of inventory turnovers can be crucial to profits (A) the frequency of inventory turnovers can be (B) the frequency of inventory turnovers is often (C) the frequency with which the inventory turns over is often (D) how frequently is the inventory turned over are often (E) how frequently the inventory turns over can be
i think the ans should be E, in the q i think parallelism is tested and that how items are placed on selves and how frequently the inventory turns over can be, both sentences are parallel in terms of verb and all other things.

yes, the context makes the collective noun plural or singular. when the collective noun acts it self as a team then it should be singular but when the individual members are acting with each other of with one another then plural verb is to be used.

B, C and D are out due to redundancy.....frequently and often A is out because between A and E, E is more parallel
Hi guys, Please help me with the logic behind this one: A huge flying reptile that died out with the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago, the Quetzalcoatlus had a wingspan of 36 feet, believed to be the largest flying creature the world has ever seen. Thanking u guys in advance for ur help.
pretty straightfwd imo, the modifier 'in her home' modifies Aho, so it should be as close as possible to Aho.
hi, I am not able to get why E is the best choice here.IS A itself not good? Doctors still know little about how the Listeria bacterium is spread and why the disease it causes, listeriosis, afflicts some people in a contaminated area though it spares many others. (A) though it spares (B) where it spares (C) despite sparing (D) when sparing (E) while sparing Thanks.

Hey Suruchee, same thing here as in prev example. Look, at this *listeriosis, afflicts some people in a contaminated area though it spares many others.* what is it referring to here? 'listeriosis' or 'a contaminated area'. This is more evident in the option B, which actually modifies a contaminated area. So A and B are out. D is out as it makes no sense. 'Despite' should be at the start so C is out. E is perfect. Sparing refers to listeriosis.

Ans is C
Is the sentence correct? I think the second comma should be after Quetzalcoatlus. And then option C fits in.

Ans can't be C. It has to be "A", as "believed to be" is the correct idiom. Also, C cant be an answer, cuz it's in passive form while the actual sentence isn't.
Hi, In this question, why is E the best choice?I thought it would be B Of the twin supernovas, the most recently discovered is the largest, but it is the small one that has irrevocably altered astronomists ideas about the origins of the universe. (A) the most recently discovered is the largest, but it is the small one (B) the one most recently discovered is the largest, but it is the small one (C) the most recently discovered is larger, but it is the smaller (D) the more recently discovered one is the large one but the small one (E) the more recently discovered is the larger, but it is the smaller one
This one is from 1000 SCs.(I am beginning to think that a few of their answers may be wrong).
