My take B

what are the OA's?

It is not C, coz 'they' here is referring to state whereas we need to talk about the number of UFOs sighted.

Yeah the OA is B. Can you explain how?

A,E are gone, cuz relative pronoun which wrongly modifies subject UFO.
C - uses "they" and it has no refrerence-eliminate
D - sighted - sighthings not parallel
B - the best choice

Rising inventories, when unaccompanied correspondingly by increases in sales, can lead to production cutbacks that would hamper economic growth.

A)When unaccompanied correspondingly by increases in sales, can lead
B)When not accompanied by corresponding increases in sales, possibly leads
C)When they were unaccompanied by corresponding sales increases, can lead
D)If not accompanied by correspondingly increased slaes, possibly leads
E) If not accompanied by corresponding increases in sales, can lead

OA is E. But I am confused because, there is this grammar rule that *if* in a subordinate clause cannot have *can* in the main clause, rather it should have *will*
Help please.

I agree B is the choice by POE, but it lacks something :(, I guess it is not referring to the past figures. 😞

Well let me clear your confusion.
A ,D- uses correspondingly, which is an adverb. we know that adverb can modify verb, verb phrase, adjective and another adverb. here in this case it modifies "increase in sales" which is a noun phrase. hence we can eliminate that..

"when" is used as an instance of time. Hence the usage of "when" is wrong here.
eliminate a,b,c

Answer is E - corresponding is an adjective and correctly modifies noun phrase "increase in sales"

Hope this helps

makes sense....blink blink

For me it seems to be B.

as if we use which,it will refer to the nearest noun.

B) and its first practice was preceded bu a brief strategy session
C) and a brief strategy session preceded its first practice.
D) and, before commencing their first practice, they joined in a brief strategy session
E) and, before commencing their first practice, joined in a brief strategy session

This question is mentioned in Psahil's notes and the right answer is E , The explanation goes like this:

"With collective nouns, use a singular/pluar verb depending upon whether you want to emphasize on a single group or its individual members."

But , As per Manahattan SC, Each Collective noun takes a singular verb, as it qoutes.

I can understand the difference, as Manhattan, when it says that, talks about the verb and not the pronoun. Can some one please give me more calrifications on this. Quite confusing this one for me.

Is it just that the collective nouns when used shuold have a singular verb and a pronoun which is plural?

Thanks

Abhishek,
In this particular example, note the hint given - "...donned their uniforms.."
This gives us an idea that "team" is used as plural.

It is not that collective nouns should have singular verb and a plural pronoun.
If the collective noun is plural then plural verb and plural pronoun will be used. It depends on the usage and the sentence.

If anyone else here is having more inputs, please put in.

I was so much sure of the idea that all collective nouns should use singular verb that i dint even realize that there was a hint . Thanks for that.

From you statement I could figure out that identifying whether a collective noun in plural or singular depends completely on the context and usage. PLease correct me if I am wrong here.

But I am still confused with what Manhattan SC says about collective nouns that all the collective nouns should have a singular verb. Any comments!!

Thanks
Abhishek

Abhishek,

Manhattan is correct. Collective Nouns are ALWAYS Singular. If you compare Options d & e. "D" uses "they" which is plural pronoun and hence there is a pronoun agreement error which occurs in "D" wherein "Team" is singular. hence we eliminate that.
The Best choice E
dont try to confuse yourself. Follow what Manhattan says..

Hope this Helps.

Hi Vandan,

I have a question here..
In the above sentence, if Team is singular then what does "their" in original sentence modify?

To clarify this, what I understand is..
  1. we eliminate D because "they" is not required. "streamed", "donned" and "joined" are parallel.
  2. In original sentence and in E ("..their uniforms.." and "..their first practice.."), "their" is used for Team which shows that collective noun Team in this context refers to each member of the team. This is logical because had it been "..donned its uniform..", it would have shown that the whole team donned just a single uniform. But actually it should refer to uniform of each team member. Hence "..donned their uniforms.."
Therefor, I think collective nouns can be used as either plural or singular depending on the usage and meaning.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
