GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Ans c c e
Whats de oa?

Could you plz explain the 3rd one (Australian embryologists..) why did you pick option E? i thought it should be A (though none seems perfect to me but A is the closest)

abouttime,

here is the explanation for first two.

1) corporate finance committee ..

A -
B - when they allocate investment funds, they make strategic judgements about where the firm might be expanding
when is used as a conjunction here with the intention of point of time. It seems that "they make strategic judgments only when they allocate funds" but it should have been "they make
strategic judgments by allocating funds" . Hope you got that this option distorts the meaning.
C- same as it is with B
D - introduces future tense
E - somewhat distorts the meaning by making the "allocations" as subject. it is wordy & awkard

So A is the OA

2) On Earth..

correct idiom is "believe X to be Y" or in passive voice "X is believed to be Y"
here try to figure out what is X and what is Y.

rate is believed to be one of the surest indication.

A - misplace the X & Y
B - incorrect idiom usage
C- correct
D & E - same as A

so OA is C

mockingabird,

plz explain the 3rd one..
The OAs are (D) & (C) respectively.

For the "ankle" question, the OG provides a clear explanation for choosing (D) over other options.

However, for the "Cattle" question, the answer says (C) and no further explanation has been given.

As these questions are from GMAC & ETS respectively, i assumed the reasoning must be the same and chose (D) for the 2nd question.. apparently i was mistaken!

Help!!

1. It has been said - Passive
The only thing that can be done - Passive

2. It is ........to say - Active
All one can do - Active

Hope it helps.

Hey thanks neity...you are right about 1, but for the second one i was confused between C and E...and it doesnt look like E is misplacing X and Y...as in:

"X is believed to be among the surest indications of Y"(option C) can also be written as "Among the surest indications of Y is believed to be X" (option E)....

Ex. Among the best players in the local cricket team is Suresh.

but i think the reason why E could be eliminated is that it unnecessarily introduces the inversion and a better and straightforward option C is right there. Do you see anything else definitely wrong with option E?
Again thanks for your explanations.

    whtz de oa?

    Reasons:
    2)Look for parallel construction . Left with D, E
among the two E correctly places the noun inventory first.
3)All options with being out. Left with A and another one. A is the more concise.
4)to try to is the right idiom.
5)used caused by/ due to and not because left with D, E. E is correct.

    Again thanks for your explanations.

    abouttime,

I believe that you have taken a very simple example to prove your point.

Beware !! by saying "Among the surest indications of Y is believed to be X" you are playing with idiom.
If you say - "A bike is believed to be a two-wheeler" then does it mean you can you also say - "A two-wheeler is believed to be a bike". Simply not !! Reverse doesn't hold true always and idiom has to be used like that only.
Though sometime it may make sense, still you can't use it like that because you can't explain every grammatical rule. They are just like that !!

Moreover, E is awkward because if you read it again you will realize that the intrusion of "on earth" distorts the meaning. It seems that earth is made up of sunspot-cycles.

    hope it helps

the OA should be B, as it follows the correct parallelism but it seems logically incorrect. Plz cross-check it again - it should be "were not so" rather than "were so"
