Studies show that children who watch too much television are more likely than others to become obese adults. Jacob, who is an obese adult, must have watched more television as a child than I did, since I am not obese.

Which of the following most closely parallels the logical structure above ?

(A) The hardware store on Main Street must have had a bigger advertisement in the Sunday paper than the hardware store around the corner had. The hardware store on Main Street sold twice as many items as the hardware store around the corner did last week, and a Sunday paper advertisement has been shown to increase the number of items sold.

(B) Studies show that large dogs lives shorter lives, on average, than small dogs do. Rex is a large dog and therefore might be expected to live a shorter life than Mustang, who is a small dog.

(C) The county superintendent stated that all schools would be canceled for the day if snowfall last night were greater than six inches. Therefore, since the snowfall was only five inches, we must be following the usual school schedule today.

(D) According to research, people with unusual musical talent do not achieve their true potential unless they are given formal lessons. Therefore Jesse, who has achieved his full musical potential without formal lessons must not have unusual musical talent.

(E) People who like vegetables also like fruits. Elizabeth does not like fruits, so she must not like vegetables either.

i think its B) Studies show that large dogs lives shorter lives, on average, than small dogs do. Rex is a large dog and therefore might be expected to live a shorter life than Mustang, who is a small dog.
Singing in the Rain Umbrella Corp. plans to institute a marketing campaign in
which it sells umbrellas at the exits of subway stations during rainy weather. The
umbrellas will be sold at a price that is slightly higher than normal. The company
thinks the sales of these higher - priced umbrellas will be greater than normal
sales of umbrellas, because the purchasers of these umbrellas will be forced to
buy them if they do not want to get wet.

The author assumes which of the following about the purchasers of the umbrellas
in predicting the sales of the umbrellas?

A. Customers who do not feel immediate pressure to purchase will
not do so.
B. Normally priced umbrellas are not profitable for singing in the
Rain Umbrellas Corp.
C. Very few people buy Singing in the Rains normally priced
umbrellas.
D. Singing in the Rain Umbrellas Corp. will have to stop selling
normally priced umbrellas when it starts selling higher priced
umbrellas.
E. Most potential customers of Singing in the Rains higher priced
umbrellas will not have acquired an umbrella previously.

E. Most potential customers of Singing in the Rains higher priced umbrellas will not have acquired an umbrella previously.

I guess A would be prefered
Physicians' associations argue that because only physicians understand the underlying skills that an individual needs in order to practice medicine according to professional standards, these associations should continue to exercise control over the admissions standards of medical schools. Critics reply that in other fields, professional standards are upheld even though professional associations do not control admissions standards for schools.Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the argument of the physicians' associations against the challenge offered by the critics?
(A) The quality of education in schools whose admissions are controlled by professional associations is generally thought to have declined in recent years.
(B) Experienced professionals in several other professions are considered better evaluators of professional skills than physicians are.
(C) No professional associations other than physicians' associations have ever attempted to control admissions to professional schools.
(D) In the decade after physicians' associations began to control the number of students admitted to medical schools, accidents caused by physician negligence declined sharply.
(E) Prospective physicians who are denied admission to medical school may still work in other health care professions.

is it (D) In the decade after physicians' associations began to control the number of students admitted to medical schools, accidents caused by physician negligence declined sharply.
A: weakens the physicians' associations stand
B: same
C: not relevant
E: same

postal service is badly mismanaged. Forty years ago, first-class letter delivery cost only three cents. Since then, the price has increased nearly tenfold, with an actual decrease in the speed and reliability of service.
Each of the following statements, if true, would tend to weaken the argument above EXCEPT:
(A) The volume of mail handled by the postal service has increased dramatically over the last forty years.
(B) Unprecedented increases in the cost of fuel for trucks and planes have put severe upward pressures on postal delivery costs.
(C) Private delivery services usually charge more than does the postal service for comparable delivery charges.
(D) The average delivery time for a first-class letter four decades ago was actually slightly longer than it is today.
(E) The average level of consumer prices overall has increased more than 300 percent over the last forty years.

Hi rangde1pratu -- I'll answer your questions one by one otherwise the post will become huge, making it difficult to read.

Also, i'll start from the second question because I totally hate the first question. Reason - later.

OK -- so the correct answer for this one is option D.

The question is asking us to find the option which will NOT weaken the argument. The CONCLUSION of the argument is 'POSTAL SERVICE IS BADLY MISMANAGED'. Reason/Cause: increase in price and actual decrease in the speed and reliability of the service- This is a cause and effect question. Please read my earlier post regarding this type of question. (go back by 2 pages)

Option D - this option tells us that the delivery time of "first-class letter" has slightly decrease- this statement is not harming the overall conclusion because there is no evidence of the overall increase/decrease of the speed and reliability. Hence this is the correct choice
A computer crash has occurred when a computer's central processing unit 'freezes up' and cannot respond to further commands or perform additional functions. In the split second during a computer crash, however, certain functions are still possible. When cindy's micron 401 computer crashed, she suspected it was due to an electrical power surge to the computer. The micron 401 computer usually does not work fast enough during a crash to produce an error message on the screen before the computer 'freezes'. However an error message can be triggered by an electrical power surge to the computer. Whenever a micron 401 computer crashes without producing an error message on the screen, the computer's hard drive is damaged. Upon restarting her computer, cindy determined its hard drive was not damaged.

Which one of the following must be true on basis of the information above ?

(A) If the micron 401's processor worked faster during the crash, the computer 's hard drive would have been damaged.

(B) The micron 401's hard drive is specially suited to withstand computer crashes.

(c) If the the micron 401's crash was not due to an electrical power surge, the computer's processor worked unusually fast during the crash.

(D) The micron 401 computer is built to withstand electrical power surges.

(E) If an error message appeared on the screen of the micron 401, it did so only after computer crashed

Any clue about this one ??

I am a little confused between B and C; inclined towards C though

Yes.It's D...

Gloria: Those who advocate tuition tax credits for parents whose children attend private schools maintain that people making no use of a government service should not be forced to pay for it. Yet those who choose to buy bottled water rather than drink water from the local supply are not therefore exempt from paying taxes to maintain the local water supply.
Roger: Your argument is illogical. Children are required by law to attend school. Since school attendance is a matter not of choice, but of legal requirement, it is unfair for the government to force some parents to pay for it twice.
Which of the following responses by Gloria would best refute Rogers charge that her argument is illogical?
(A) Although drinking water is not required by law, it is necessary for all people, and therefore my analogy is appropriate.
(B) Those who can afford the tuition at a high-priced private school can well bear the same tax burden as those whose children attend public schools.
(C) If tuition tax credits are granted, the tax burden on parents who choose public schools will rise to an intolerable level.
(D) The law does not say that parents must send their children to private schools, only that the children must attend some kind of school, whether public or private.
(E) Both bottled water and private schools are luxury items, and it is unfair that some citizens should be able to afford them while others cannot.

This is a tricky question in my opinion.

At first I though Gloria is saying that people should be given tax exempt. But after reading Roger's argument i had to go back and check Gloria's argument again.

Gloria is saying that people should be made to pay tax even if their kids are in private tution.

Roger is refuting gloria's argument by saying that school attendance is a matter not of choice, but of legal requirement, it is unfair for the government to force some parents to pay for it twice i.e pay tution fee as well as the tax.

Gloria can defend herself by using option A "which says that although drinking water is a NECESSITY- everyone is paying tax irrespective of their choice from Bottled water and local supply" -- in the same way they should continue to pay for the education as well.
Thus option A should be the correct answer.

17. Every painting hanging in the Hoular Gallery is by a French painter. No painting in the Hoular Gallery is by a Vorticist. Only Vorticists use acrylic monochromes in their works.
If the information above is true, which of the following must also be true?
(A) No French painters are Vorticists. -- ELIMINATE. we cannot generalize about all french painters using the information given

(B) All Vorticists use acrylic monochromes in their works. -- same as A. Although the question says "ONLY" vorticists use acrylic monochromes.. it does not mean that every vorticist use acrylic monochromes. They can use other paints as well. ELIMINATE

(C) Some French painters do not use acrylic monochromes in their works. -- CORRECT. There is a possibility that some frence painters who have listed their art in the store used acrylic monochromes in their work. Because the question does not say that acrylic monochromes work is not listed. It only says that work of vorticists is not listed.

(D) No French painters use acrylic monochromes in their works. -- again .. a generalization.. eliminate

(E) All French painters who use acrylics use acrylic monochromes in their works. -- we cannot deduce this information as well from the question as well.

This question is fairly easy IMO.

Answer should be C.

First of all look at the language used in the question... ONLY.. EVERY .. very strong language. Generally, I have seen that the safest answer to these type of questions are the one which use WEAK language. for example: - SUCH, MAY etc.

Also use a VENN diagram if you are a 'Math guy' just like me. πŸ˜ƒ

"In certain congested urban areas, commuters who use public transportation options such as trains and subways spend approximately 25 percent less time in transit, on average, to reach their destinations than commuters who opt instead to take cars to their destinations. Even individuals who drive their entire commute in carpool lanes, which are typically the least congested sections of roadways, still spend more time, on average, than commuters who use trains and subways."

The statements above, if true, best support which of the following assertions about commuting in the congested urban areas mentioned above?

(A) Waiting in traffic accounts for approximately 25 percent of the commuting time for individuals who drive to their destinations.
(B) Walking between a subway or train station and one's final destination does not, on average, take longer than walking between one's car and one's final destination.
(C) Using carpool lanes does not, on average, reduce driving time by more than 25 percent.
(D) Individuals who commute via public buses spend approximately 25 percent more time in transit than those who commute using public trains or subways.
(E) Subways and trains are available in the majority of congested urban areas

i think its's (C) Using carpool lanes does not, on average, reduce driving time by more than 25 percent. ...cause negating this option will weaken the argument..
Laws requiring the use of headlights during daylight hours can prevent automobile collisions. However, since daylight visibility is worse in countries farther from the equator, any such laws would obviously be more effective in preventing collisions in those countries. In fact, the only countries that actually have such laws are farther from the equator than is the continental United States.

Which of the following conclusions could be most properly drawn from the information given above?
(A) Drivers in the continental United States who used their headlights during the day would be just as likely to become involved in a collision as would drivers who did not use their headlights.
(B) In many countries that are farther from the equator than is the continental United States, poor daylight visibility is the single most important factor in automobile collisions.
(C) The proportion of automobile collisions that occur in the daytime is greater in the continental United States than in the countries that have daytime headlight laws.

(D) Fewer automobile collisions probably occur each year in countries that have daytime headlight laws than occur within the continental United States.
(E) Daytime headlight laws would probably do less to prevent automobile collisions in the continental United States than they do in the countries that have the laws.

my take for this one :(E) Daytime headlight laws would probably do less to prevent automobile collisions in the continental United States than they do in the countries that have the laws.

IMO E should be the answer ..

Scientists typically do their most creative work before
the age of forty. It is commonly thought that this
happens because aging by itself brings about a loss
of creative capacity. However, studies show that of
scientists who produce highly creative work
beyond the age of forty, a disproportionately
large number entered their fi eld at an older age
than is usual
. Since by the age of forty the large
majority of scientists have been working in their fi eld
for at least fi fteen years, the studies fi nding strongly
suggests that the real reason why scientists over forty
rarely produce highly creative work is not that they
have aged but rather that scientists over forty have
generally spent too long in their field
.

From the structure of the argument, it is clear that 1st bold is an evidence and 2nd bold is a conclusion.

so option C or E ..

E fits the context better than C

so E

Sales at a local sandwich shop have been declining steadily since a health food restaurant opened its doors for business on the same block three months ago. The owner of the sandwich shop concludes that the best way to raise sales back to prior levels is to offer special sandwich prices that compete with the low prices at the health food restaurant.

only possible option is A .. only A gives the assumption that locals prefer sandwich shop over restaurant

In Kravonia, the average salary for jobs requiring a college degree has always been higher than the average salary for jobs that do not require a degree. Over the last few years, the number of Kravonians enrolled in college has been growing steadily. Therefore, the number of Kravonians entering the job market who have at least the qualification of a college degree will eventually be significantly higher than it has been over the last few years.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?

A. Kravonians with more than one college degree earn little more, on average, than do Kravonians with only one college degree.
B. The average number of years Kravonian college students remain enrolled before completing a degree has been increasing over the past several years.
C. Despite the increase in the number of Kravonians attending college, the percentage of the population attending college is lower in Kravonia than in most other countries.
D. In recent years, employers have been requiring college degrees for workers in jobs that were previously performed successfully by Kravonians who did not have college degrees.
E. For many years, employers in Kravonia have had difficulty finding enough college graduates to fill the high-paying jobs that were available.
