GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

one from my side.

Country X imposes heavy tariffs on imported manufactured goods. Company Y has determined that it could increase its profits in the long term by opening a factory in Country X to manufacture the goods that it currently produces in its home country for sale in Country X. For Company Y's determination to be true,

which of the following assumptions must also be true?

A) Company Y will be able to obtain all the necessary permits to open a factory in Country X.
B) Company Y currently produces no goods outside its home country.
C) A sustainable market for Company Y's goods currently exists in Country X.
D) Company Y's home country does not impose tariffs on imported goods.
E) Labor costs in Country X are lower than those in Company Y's home country.

With C, the word "sustainable" is the key. There may be a market of country Y's goods in country X, but if the market is not sustainable, then the plan might not work.

But B) states that a person is high school graduate then how does the question of him failing comes up ?

It might seem that an airline could increase profits by reducing airfares on all its flights in order to encourage discretionary travel and thus fill planes. Offers of across-the-board discount fares have, indeed, resulted in the sale of large numbers of reduced-price tickets. Nevertheless such offers have, in the past, actually cut the airlines profits.
Which one of the following, if true, most helps to resolve the apparent discrepancy described above?
(A) Fewer than 10 percent of all air travelers make no attempt to seek out discount fares.
(B) Fares for trips between a large city and a small city are higher than those for trips between two large cities even when the distances involved are the same.
(C) Across-the-board discounts in fares tend to decrease revenues on flights that are normally filled, but they fail to attract passengers to unpopular flights.
(D) Only a small number of people who have never before traveled by air are persuaded to do so on the basis of across-the-board discount fares.
(E) It is difficult to devise an advertising campaign that makes the public aware of across-the-board discount fares while fully explaining the restrictions applied to those discount fares.

Option C. Gives us reason why profits decreased.

@ Angadbir-- yeah,

That's correct.. OA is indeed C.
Question 1:

Studies show that in 70% of traffic acidents, at least one driver involved is less than 10 miles from home, when accidents occur. Thus drivers do have a tendency to drive incautiously, when loser home, reiterating the finding that places where people feel safest are the places where they are at greatest risk.

The author has based his assertion on the false assumption that:
A) Familiarity of surroundings gives them a sense of false security.
B) The other 30% of accidents happen far from home.
C) Drivers drive rashly only in familiar surroundings.
D) People incur more risks on home turf.
E) A distance of ten miles cannot be considered home.

In the year following an 8-cent increase in the federal tax on a pack of cigarettes, sales of cigarettes fell 10%. In contrast, in the year prior to the tax increase, sales had fallen 1%. The volume of cigarette sales is therefore strongly related to the after-tax price of a pack of cigarettes.

The argument above requires which of the following assumptions?

A. During the year following the tax increase, the pretax price of a pack of cigarettes did not increase by as much as it had during the year prior to the tax increase.

B. The one percent fall in cigarette sales in the year prior to tax increase was due to a smaller tax increase.

C. The pretax price of a pack of cigarettes gradually decreased throughout the year before and the year after the tax increase.

D. For the year following the tax increase, the pretax price of a pack of cigarettes were not eight or more cents lower than it had been the previous year.

E. As the after-tax price of a pack of cigarettes rises, the pretax price also rises

is it B The one percent fall in cigarette sales in the year prior to tax increase was due to a smaller tax increase.?
It is not known whether bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a disease of cattle invariably deadly to them, can be transmitted directly from one infected animal to another at all stages of the infection. If it can be, there is now a reservoir of infected cattle incubating the disease. There are no diagnostic tests to identify infected animals before the animals show overt symptoms. Therefore, if such direct transmission occurs, the disease cannot be eradicated by ____
Which one of the following best completes the argument?
(A) removing from the herd and destroying any diseased animal as soon as it shows the typical symptoms of advanced BSE
(B) developing a drug that kills the agent that cause BSE, and then treating with that drug all cattle that might have the disease
(C) destroying all cattle in areas where BSE occurs and raising cattle only in areas to which BSE is known not to have spread
(D) developing a vaccine that confers lifelong immunity against BSE and giving it to all cattle, destroying in due course all those animals for which the vaccine protection came too late
(E) developing a diagnostic test that does identify any infected animal and destroying all animals found to be infected

I will go with option A for the above CR

The recording industry is fighting a losing battle: it simply does not have the resources to prosecute all of the individuals who illegally download music from the Internet. Because the number of individuals who will be charged with a crime is so limited, the actions of the recording industry will have a minimal impact on the number of people who illegally download music.

The answer to which of the following questions would best help evaluate the accuracy of the conclusion above?
a)Will recording industry lawyers dedicate the majority of their time to prosecuting those who illegally download music?
b)Is a small minority of individuals responsible for the majority of illegal song downloads?
c)Do many individuals who illegally download songs share their music files with other Internet users?
d)Will new Internet security technology permit the recording industry to more quickly and easily identify individuals who illegally download music?

Sales of a new chocolate bar were considerably boosted recently by an advertisement that featured a classic rock song. The candy manufacturer's decision to also use classic rock songs in commercials for its older and more popular products, in the hopes of boosting profits, is NOT based on the assumption that ___________________.

A. thanks to the new advertising strategy, all of the company's older products will sell at least as well as the new chocolate bar.
B. sales of a particular product can be increased by a memorable or catchy advertisement campaign.
C. use of classic rock songs will be more commercially effective than the advertising techniques currently used by the company for its older products

Many local town governments in New England still practice direct democracy where the population of the town votes to resolve issues. Critics of these town councils argue that well-funded special interest groups are able to influence these large open referenda.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthen the critics' argument?

(A) Groups that oppose well-funded special interest groups do not have the budgets to mount major media campaigns in local markets.
(B) Direct elections are not effective because individual citizens do not have as much knowledge as professional legislators.
(C) Since individual voters make the decision, direct democracy provides insurance against the influence of wealthy special interest groups.
(D) Local newspapers and TV stations tend to be biased in favor of special interest groups and provide unbalanced reporting to local citizens.
(E1) Direct democracies tend to make decisions on the passions of local populace rather than long term guided decisions
(E2) Decisions by local town governments usually are in line with the views of well-funded special interest.

Why E1 and E2? Anyways, Answer should be E2. Only E2 is inline with the Critic's argument.
Critics insist that government regulation of business
has made it more difficult for American businesses to
operate profitably and has destroyed their ability to
compete with foreign producers of consumer goods.
This argument is not compelling. Government regulation
of business was never as active in this nation as
it was between the years 1975 and 1985, and in
those years the average net worth of American
families increased more than it had in any previous
decade.
The authors argument would be most seriously
weakened if it were true that

1. Eighty percent of all businesses started during
the decade 1975-1985 lost money in their
first year of operation.

2. More businesses declared bankruptcy during
the period 1975-1985 than in any previous
decade.

3. During the decade 1975-1985, America
imported more consumer goods than it
exported.

4. The increase in net worth of average American
families during the years 1975-1985 was
largely due to an increase in the value of
residential homes.

5. The average interest rate charged on business
and home mortgage loans was higher during
the decade 1975-1985 than it had been in
any previous decade.

This is a CAUSE and EFFECT question. This question is pretty tricky.. People usually fall for wrong choices because of the wordings used in this question.

If you have read Powerscore CR bible then you might be aware of those tricks. This book has a very good strategy to deal with Cause and Effect questions. almost 99.99% of the times you will need to provide a different/alternate CAUSE for the effect observed.

only option D i.e. 4 falls in that category and hence weakning the argument most.

I am pretty sure that you posted this question previously in this thread.

And there were confusions between option A and D.

MY take is OPTION A. -- Reason ( the question already tells us that OLDER CHOCOLATES are MORE POPULAR.) . Therefore this is not an assumption used by the manufacturer while deciding to use Rock music.

can i request you to please copy paste the complete explanation for this question here, so that we all are very clear.

I feel that option D cannot be the answer.
Calorie restriction, a diet high in nutrients but low in calories, is known to prolong the life of rats and mice by preventing heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. A six-month study of 48 moderately overweight people, who each reduced their calorie intake by at least 25 percent, demonstrated decreases in insulin levels and body temperature, with the greatest decrease observed in individuals with the greatest percentage change in their calorie intake. Low insulin level and body temperature are both considered signs of longevity, partly because an earlier study by other researchers found both traits in long-lived people.

If the above statements are true, they support which of the following inferences?

a. Calorie restriction produces similar results in humans as it does in rats and mice.

b. Humans who reduce their calorie intake by at least 25 percent on a long-term basis will live longer than they would have had they not done so.

c. Calorie intake is directly correlated to insulin level in moderately overweight individuals.

d. Individuals with low insulin levels are healthier than individuals with high insulin levels.

e. Some individuals in the study reduced their calorie intake by more than 25 percent.

my take a). Calorie restriction produces similar results in humans as it does in rats and mice.
Party leaders feared that the recent addition of conservative planks to the party platform would diminish the popularity of the party among younger voters. Some predicted that the number of party members younger than 25 would decline, or, at best, stay the same. This fear, though, has proven to be unfounded: of all party members, the percentage younger than 25 is higher than ever. Rather than hurt the party, conservatism has helped attract more young voters to the party.

Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the authors conclusion?

1) Many party leaders are uncomfortable with the political direction the party is taking, for both political and ideological reasons.

2) Party candidates continue to suffer defeats when running on the party platform.

3) The number of party members older than 25 declined significantly after the announcement of the new conservative platform.

4) In the last election, the ratio of voters under the age of 25 who voted for the party to all voters under the age of 25 increased.

5) Over half the population of potential voters under the age of 25 never vote.

my take 2) Party candidates continue to suffer defeats when running on the party platform.

A. this can be assumption as previous sales of old products can be increased to the level that sales of new chocolate bars are sold thus proving postive affects of advertising strategy.
D. well this could have been assumption if its been specifically mentioned chocolate bars,as for candy bars not mentioned anything in passage and not necessarily every candy bar is chocolate so here is the trap thus cannot be assumption.

This is an AssumptionX question, i.e., it is asking us to figure out which one of the options cannot work as an assumption.

The primary fight is between A&D;, I will ignore the rest.

The premise tells us that the older products are already more popular than the new product.

A->this states that because of the use of rock songs, the older products will sell as well as the new chocolate bar. This assumption is contrary to what the premise tells us, this cannot be an assumption.
If the the old products sell at least as well as the new chocolate bar, it is possible for their sales to have dropped in comparison to the new chocolate and therefore a boost in profits does not necessarily follow.

@Cognizant_81, quoting your explanation "this can be assumption as previous sales of old products can be increased to the level that sales of new chocolate bars are sold thus proving postive affects of advertising strategy"

Old products -> already more popular than the new product, so why will the company try to match sales with the new chocolate, which is less popular than the old one's?

D-> This can be an assumption, Chocolate(new product) buyers stop buying older products, sales will possibly drop.

Quoting Cognizant_81 :"well this could have been assumption if its been specifically mentioned chocolate bars,as for candy bars not mentioned anything in passage and not necessarily every candy bar is chocolate so here is the trap thus cannot be assumption."

Hi dipak,

Option 2 is incorrect. -- Read the question again - it's a cause and effect question. In order to weaken the argument we need to provide an alternate reason for the trend observed.

Option 3 does this for us and is the correct answer. -- It's a simple math problem.

Say for example : in a party of 100 people there are 25 people who are less than 25yrs of age. and rest are above 25 yrs of age.

the ratio of people less than 25yrs = 25/100 = 0.25

now, if 50 people who are 25+ leave the party and 5 people who are below 25yrs of age leave the party. the new ratio will be

20/45 = 0.44 .. You can see that although 5 people who are below 25yrs of age left the party, the ratio actually increase due to other reason.

Hence:- if this is the case then the argument will be hit the most!

Hope this helps

To avoid a hostile takeover attempt, the board of directors of Wellco, Inc., a provider of life and health insurance, planned to take out large loans and use them to purchase a publishing company, a chocolate factory, and a nationwide chain of movie theaters. The directors anticipated that these purchase initially would plunge the corporation deep into debt, rendering it unattractive to those who wanted to take it over, but that steadily rising insurance rates would allow the company to pay off the debt within five years. Meanwhile, revenues from the three new businesses would enable the corporation as a whole to continue to meet its increased operating expenses. Ultimately, according o the directors plan, the diversification would strengthen the corporation by varying the sources and schedules of its annual revenues.
Which of the following, assuming that all are equally possible, would most enhance the chances of the plans success?
(A) A widespread drought decreases the availability of cacao beans, from which chocolate is manufacture, diving up chocolate prices worldwide.
(B) New government regulations require a 30 percent across-the-board rate rollback of all insurance companies, to begin immediately and to be completed within a five-year period.
(C) Congress enacts a statute, effective after six months, making it illegal for any parent not to carry health insurance coverage for his or her child.
(D) Large-screen televisions drop dramatically in price due to surprise alterations in trade barriers with Japan; movie theater attendance dwindles as a consequence.
(E) A new, inexpensive process is discovered for making paper pulp, and paper prices fall to 60 percent of their former level.

postal service is badly mismanaged. Forty years ago, first-class letter delivery cost only three cents. Since then, the price has increased nearly tenfold, with an actual decrease in the speed and reliability of service.
Each of the following statements, if true, would tend to weaken the argument above EXCEPT:
(A) The volume of mail handled by the postal service has increased dramatically over the last forty years.
(B) Unprecedented increases in the cost of fuel for trucks and planes have put severe upward pressures on postal delivery costs.
(C) Private delivery services usually charge more than does the postal service for comparable delivery charges.
(D) The average delivery time for a first-class letter four decades ago was actually slightly longer than it is today.
(E) The average level of consumer prices overall has increased more than 300 percent over the last forty years.

Gloria: Those who advocate tuition tax credits for parents whose children attend private schools maintain that people making no use of a government service should not be forced to pay for it. Yet those who choose to buy bottled water rather than drink water from the local supply are not therefore exempt from paying taxes to maintain the local water supply.
Roger: Your argument is illogical. Children are required by law to attend school. Since school attendance is a matter not of choice, but of legal requirement, it is unfair for the government to force some parents to pay for it twice.
Which of the following responses by Gloria would best refute Rogers charge that her argument is illogical?
(A) Although drinking water is not required by law, it is necessary for all people, and therefore my analogy is appropriate.
(B) Those who can afford the tuition at a high-priced private school can well bear the same tax burden as those whose children attend public schools.
(C) If tuition tax credits are granted, the tax burden on parents who choose public schools will rise to an intolerable level.
(D) The law does not say that parents must send their children to private schools, only that the children must attend some kind of school, whether public or private.
(E) Both bottled water and private schools are luxury items, and it is unfair that some citizens should be able to afford them while others cannot.
