rohan101 Saysreplacing people through automation to reduce production cost will result in increase of other cost of corporations....my take
Q1. in many corporations, employees are being replaced by automated equipment in order to save money. However, many workers lose their jobs to automation will need government assistance to survive. And the same corporation will eventually pay for that assistance through increased taxes and unemployment insurance payment.
The author is arguing that
a) higher taxes and unemployment insurance payment will discourage corporations from automating.
b) replacing people through automation to reduce production cost will result in increase of other cost of corporations
c) many workers who lose their jobs to automation will have to be retained for new jobs
d) corporations that are laying people off will eventually rehire many of them.
e) these steps will have an adverse impact on the mindset of the involved workers
my take is in bold!!
yes it's right.
please do answer the remaining question previous to the double post.
Q1. in many corporations, employees are being replaced by automated equipment in order to save money. However, many workers lose their jobs to automation will need government assistance to survive. And the same corporation will eventually pay for that assistance through increased taxes and unemployment insurance payment.
.......................................................................
which of the following if true , most strengthens the author's argument?
1. many workers who have already lost their job to automation have been unable to find new jobs.
2. the initial investment in machinery for automation is often greater than the short term savings in labour cost.
3. taxes and unemployment insurance are paid also by corporations that are not automating .
4. most of the new jobs created by the automation pays less than the jobs eliminated by automation did
5 automation has increased the demand for the workers who could handle these equipment.
However it seems appropriate to modify the standard arguement and to use a more sophisticated version.replace the notion "human being"
with "human life form".the new practical syllogism is:
1.the killing of human life form is prohibited. 2.A feutus is a human life form. 3.the killing of feutuses is prohibited.the objection against the first premise of the atndard arguement still holds for a new sophisticated version. But,the second modified premise is much stronger than the previous one because one has to determine what a human life is really is.the feutus may be human life form but it hardly seems to be perdson and this has no corresponding basic right to survive.however this kind of talk goes astray because the criteria for personhodd may be suitable for just borns but not appropriate for feutuses, embryo,or unicellular zygotes, like some biological, psychological, rational, social or legal criteria may indicate.
according to paragraph the most serious problem with the practical syllogism in the standard arguement against abortions is:
(1) that one is able to argue against both the premises.
(2)that is advertently allows killing of people with severe mental handicaps.
(3)that it makes killing in self defence or in war immoral acts.
(4)that it treats the foetus as a fully developed human being.
(5)that its conclusion does not follow the premsie.

my take in bold.
first says killing featus prohibited. but that was true when we were using human beings in the syllogism. But when we replace that with human life form the conclusion doesnt hold true as it hasnt really taken life yet. something like that i guess π

The recording industry is fighting a losing battle: it simply does not have the resources to prosecute all of the individuals who illegally download music from the Internet. Because the number of individuals who will be charged with a crime is so limited, the actions of the recording industry will have a minimal impact on the number of people who illegally download music.
The answer to which of the following questions would best help evaluate the accuracy of the conclusion above?
a. Will recording industry lawyers dedicate the majority of their time to prosecuting those who illegally download music?
b. Is a small minority of individuals responsible for the majority of illegal song downloads?
c. Do many individuals who illegally download songs share their music files with other Internet users?
d. Will new Internet security technology permit the recording industry to more quickly and easily identify individuals who illegally download music?
e. Will the threat of prosecution alter the behavior of those who illegally download music?

The price the government pays for standard weapons purchased from military contractors is determined by a
pricing method called historical costing. Historical costing allows contractors to protect their profits by adding a
percentage increase, based on the current rate of inflation, to the previous years contractual price.
Which of the following statements, if true, is the best basis for a criticism of historical costing as an economically
sound pricing method for military contracts?
A. The government might continue to pay for past inefficient use of funds.
B. The rate of inflation has varied considerably over the past twenty years.
C. The contractual price will be greatly affected by the cost of materials used for the products.
D. Many taxpayers question the amount of money the government spends on military contracts.
E. The pricing method based on historical costing might not encourage the development of innovative
weapons.

uniform controls on the quality of effluents, whether or not specific environmental damage could be attributed
to a particular source of effluent. What must, of course, be shown, in order to avoid excessively restrictive
controls, is that ___________.
(A) any uniform controls that are adopted are likely to be implemented without delay
(B) any substance to be made subject to controls can actually cause environmental damage
(C) the countries favoring uniform controls are those generating the largest quantities of effluents
(D) all of any given pollutant that is to be controlled actually reaches the North Sea at present
(E) environmental damage already inflicted on the North Sea is reversible

impressions are the direct, vivid, and forceful products of immediate experience; ideas are merely feeble copies of these original impressions.
assuming the above statement is true, which of the statements logically follows from it:
1) every impression leads to an idea.
2) ideas must follow an antecedent impression.
3) the colour of the 2011 xat paper right front of candidate is an impression whereas the memory of the colour of her television set is an idea.
4) if one was interested in the origin of the idea of the colour of a television set, then one need to understand the impressions from which this idea was derived.
options
A 1 & 3
B 2 & 3
C 2 & 4
D 2 , 3 & 4
E 1, 2 , 3 & 4
yes--I think you are right.
I was assuming memory from outside the passage.
"ideas must naturally follow an impression." memory isn't mentioned anywhere.
