GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

I think it should be E.
A is irrelevant as far as monkeys are concerned.
B does not mean anything; whether or not monkeys show same behaviour is irrelevant to the question of Venezualan monkeys.
C--even if animals other than these monkeys rub insects, it does not mean anything for the question asked.
E--addresses the question asked, as to the motive behind the monkeys rubbing these insects.
D is relevant, but to me appears weaker in comparison to E.

What's the OA please?

Capuchin monkeys in Venezuela often rub a certain type of millipede into their fur. Secretions of these millipedes have been shown to contain two chemicals that are potent mosquito repellents, and mosquitoes carry parasites that debilitate the capuchins. The rubbing behavior is rare except during the rainy season, when mosquito populations are at their peak. Therefore, the monkeys probably rub the millipedes into their fur because doing so helps protect them against mosquitoes.
Which of the following would it be most useful to determine in order to evaluate the argument?

(A) Whether the two chemicals provide any protection for the millipedes against their own predators
(B) Whether the type of millipede used by the capuchin monkeys in Venezuela is found in other parts of the world
(C) Whether animals other than capuchins rub insects of any kind into their fur
(D) Whether the only time the millipedes are readily available to the capuchins is during the rainy season
(E) Whether secretions of any other insects accessible to the capuchins contain chemicals that repel mosquitoes

A - Irrelevant
B - question is about capuchin monkeys in Venezuela so availability in others part is broading the scope of search
C - Does not matter if another animals rub or not since question is on monkeys rubbing millipedes
E - could be, but then secretions of another insects not mentioned in argument

My take D - Explict mention of "The rubbing behavior is rare except during the rainy season" so rubbing can happen only if they available in rainy season

D is my take

P.C ur analysis was indeed helpful

Maas is, at best, able to write magazine articles of average quality. The most compelling pieces of evidence for this are those few of the numerous articles submitted by Maas that are superior, since Maas, who is incapable of writing an article that is better than average, must obviously have plagiarized superior ones.
The argument is most vulnerable to criticism on which one of the following grounds?

(A) It simply ignores the existence of potential counterevidence.
(B) It generalizes from atypical occurrences.
(C) It presupposes what it seeks to establish.
(D) It relies on the judgment of experts in a matter to which their expertise is irrelevant.
(E) It infers limits on ability from a few isolated lapses in performance.

My take is C.
It states in the passage that Maas is incapable of writing excellent articles because of the few good articles written, which must have been copied elsewhere, since he is incapable of writing good articles. Thus, the critic presupposes what he wants to prove.
In mathematical logic, such fallacy in reasoning is called "begging the question".
The range of companies offering different versions of the same product is immense compared to what it once was.

My take is D. It is assumed that cheap products do not last long, and hence, must be purchased repeatedly.

I feel it will be E. Because it addresses the fact that "Whether secretions of any other insects accessible to the capuchins contain chemicals that repel mosquitoes and whether milipedes is used purely for repelling reasons.....please respond and help out

The range of companies offering different versions of the same product is immense compared to what it once was. Because of this competition, many companies offer low quality products, preferring to sell more by demanding lower prices. To spend less, consumers buy the cheaper products which last for shorter periods of time, only to be disposed of and replaced by other cheap products. It can be deduced that companies that create products of an inferior quality do not contribute to the strength of the economy.
The argument above is based on which of the following assumptions?
(A) Managing the waste caused by the repeated disposal of products costs governments dearly.
(B) There are many factors that can affect the strength of an economy.
(C) The repeated purchasing of a product by the same consumer does not positively affect an economy.
(D) Products that are not relatively cheap do not necessarily last for longer than those that are.
(E) Companies that produce low quality products are not interested in the loyalty of consumers to their specific brand

I think i ll go with C:lookround:

The argument is :
Why do the monkeys rub MILLIPEDES into their fur? To repel mosquitoes, or out of habit?
Now, suppose that there is another ant available to the monkeys whose secretions also repel mosquitoes. The presence of this ant does not answer why the monkeys are rubbing the millipedes, right?
We have to be concerned only with millipedes, not with presence of any other insect.

It should be C.

Evidence: Repeated purchase of bad products

Conclusion: Does not strengthen the economy

Assumption is the connection.

Choice A is not an answer because it (assumption itself) does assume 2 things

1. the cheap producta are dumped
2. They are recycled

A - Irrelevant
B - question is about capuchin monkeys in Venezuela so availability in others part is broading the scope of search

The "determine" type questions are always answered by looking at the statementtat will weaknen the argument. Here it is a cause - effct ype relation. To weaken it you have to ask " if they are the only ones to repel mosquitos" if no thn there are other reasons and then you can answer the question.

The fact that thy only happen in rainy season is not the argument. Even if they happen in rainy season why monkey have to only apply them. Why not apply smething else.

So E is the answer

Try Kaplan 800, Princeton Review...and for really hard practice, nothing beats LSAT Critical Reasoning.

Is 'LSAT Critical Reasoning' any other book or is it the 1000 CR file?

Yes, the 1000 CR file has 2 parts - LSAT and GMAT. It should be enough. LSAT questions are way more difficult than GMAT questons, we don't try them unless we have a lot of time and are aiming for 750+.

Hey puys,

Have people started discussing the question from 1000 CR's as it does not have detailed solution. Please indicate if you puys have started.

I'm still stuck with OG. :banghead:

The suicide wave that followed the United States stock market crash of October
1929 is more legend than fact. Careful examination of the monthly figures on the
causes of death in 1929 shows that the number of suicides in October and in
November was comparatively low. In only three other months were the monthly
figures lower. During the summer months, when the stock market was flourishing,
the number of suicides was substantially higher.

Which one of the following, if true, would best challenge the conclusion of the
passage?

(A) The suicide rate is influenced by many psychological, interpersonal, and societal
factors during any given historical period.

(B) October and November have almost always had relatively high suicide rates,
even during the 1920s and 1930s.

(C) The suicide rate in October and November of 1929 was considerably higher
than the average for those months during several preceding and following
years.

(D) During the years surrounding the stock market crash, suicide rates were
typically lower at the beginning of any calendar year than toward the end of
that year.

(E) Because of seasonal differences, the number of suicides in October and
November of 1929 would not be expected to be the same as those for other
months.

I'll go with C.
All the other options appear to be irrelevant to me, and only C refutes the statement that the suicides in Oct-Nov of 1929 weren't due to the stock market crash, because the suicides for these months in 1929 were higher.
