When we speak of the "probability of death", the exact meaning of the experience can be defined in the following way only. We must not think of an individual, but of this expression can be defined in the following way only. We must not think of an individual, but of a certain class as a whole, eg., "all insured men forty-one years old living in a given country and not engaged in certain dangerous occupations." A probability of death is attached to the class of men or to another class that can be defined in a similar way. We can say nothing about the probability of death of an individual even if we know this condition of life and health in detail. The phrase "probability of death", which it refers to a single person, has no meaning at all.
Which of the following conclusions can be drawn from the passage? 1. Singular, non replicable events can be assigned numerical probability value. 2. Probability calculation requires data of the class of people or of events.
3. The data about a class of events can be used to predict the future of any specific event. (1) 1 only (2) 2 only (3) 1 and 2 (4) 2 and 3 (5) 1 and 3
Due to extreme poverty in italy between 1870 and 1930, almost 41/2 million italians - most of whom were farmers - immigrated to united states. The wave from italy reached its height in the 10 year span between 1920 and 1930, when italians comprised 12 percent of the total number of immigrants admitted to the united states. The majority of these italian immigrants were from southern italy and sicily, and upon their arrival, they settled along east coast, with the heaviest concentrations in cities such as New York, Boston and Philadelphia, though some made the arduos trip across the country to settle in northern california.
The statements above, if true, support which of the following?
A. The american descendants of those early italian immigrants outnumber the current population of italy. B. Many American farmers today are descendants of italians. C. The strong euro has contributed to the sharp decline in italian immigrants. D. An Italian immigrant to america today is still likely to be from southern italy or sicily. E. At the turn of the 19th century, the southern portion of italy was a prominent agricultural region.
Filmmakers tend to highlight their emotional points with visuals, rather than dialogue. Words tend to be the tools of playwrights. Images are the stuff that films are made of. Nevertheless, many successful films have been made from stage plays and contain little else than one location or one stage set. The option most opposite to the idea in the paragraph: (1) Films are not necessarily a filmmakers medium. (2) Films are not limited to any one particular style. (3) Films are solely built upon visual and eye- catching scenes. (4) Films are better made by playwrights and novelists. (5) Films perhaps are better understood by literary critics.

My take:-- option 3-- Films are solely built upon visual and eye- catching scenes.
However i am not able to understand the reasons. The passage mentions that most of the immigrants were farmers and majority were from southern italy. I find it difficult to come to conclusion based on this information that the southern italy was agrarian.
It could very well be possible that the southern italy had other prominent areas and because the farmers were in trouble they migrated to us for better prospects. The information in passage is not enough to come to conclusion.
"there is nothing so stupid as an educated man if you can get him off the thing he was educated in" which of the following if true most seriously undermines author's contention?
(1) True educatyion implies a well rounded exposure to major subjects.
(2)An educated man will not discuss things which he does not understand.
(3)The cost of a general education has led to the unfortunate fact that the person's education is confined to one field.
(4) Stupidity, like intelligence,is relative and therefore depends on the intelligence of the person' peers.
(5)education is one of the main causes of people recognizing their capabilities and developing them further.
My take is D The D attacks the definition of 'stupidity'. So the level of stupidity may defer. And as the author says 'there is nothing so stupid', you can find more stupid acts if the 'stupidity' depends on the intelligence of person' peers.
"there is nothing so stupid as an educated man if you can get him off the thing he was educated in" which of the following if true most seriously undermines author's contention?
(1) True education implies a well rounded exposure to major subjects. OA is in bold!
If the above statement is true, then does it mean that getting an educated man off the thing he was educated in is not stupid ? If yes, then it is correct.
It is hard to conclude from A that what author said is a weak argument.

well at first i thought E should be the awnser iwas confused btween D and E as D seems to be like far fetched conclusion good question bro keep posting such Qs
This is from Kaplan and Kaplan instructor acknowledged that this is a flawed question.
you are sitting in fornt of an interview panel for tyhe final round of selection for a job you have long conveted.you are asked about the reason for quitting your job.the fact is that you had left earlier job due to an unproved but widespread allegation on your character by your colleagues.
how will you handle the situation?
(1) you will state the fact wasa false allegation(which was unresolved) was made on your charatcetr and how you felt could not do justice to your workplace anymore due to an emotional disconnect.
(2)you will state the fact that a false allegation was made on your character and your self exteem shattered.
(3)you will not bring up the allegations as it would show your candidature in poor light.
(4)you will not bring up the allegations and simply provide other convincing resons for quitting job.
(5)you will bring up allegations and explain how it was the entire office conniving against you due to an impending promotion.

i guess its (2) and about (3), i think that hiding the fact about those allegations is not a good step
puys please post your explanation with the awnser you marked. Prediction, the hallmark of natural sciences, appears to have been possible by reducing phenomena to mathematical expressions. Some social scientists also want the power to predict accurately and assume they ought to perform the same reduction. But this would be a mistake, it would neglect data that are not easily mathematized and thereby would only distort the social phenomena. Which one of the following most accurately expresses the main conclusion of the argument? 1. The social sciences do not have as much predictive power as the natural sciences. 2. Mathematics plays a more important role in the natural sciences than it does in the social sciences. 3. Phenomena in the social sciences should not be reduced to mathematical formulae. 4. There is a need in the social sciences to improve the ability to predict. 5. Prediction is responsible for the success of the natural sciences.
I guess its option 3. The word "mistake" is crucial here as it says, reduction is something which should not be done because that would only distort the social phenomena. And option 3 is the most suitable option as it goes with this flow. π
Q1. in many corporations, employees are being replaced by automated equipment in order to save money. However, many workers lose their jobs to automation will need government assistance to survive. And the same corporation will eventually pay for that assistance through increased taxes and unemployment insurance payment.
The author is arguing that
a) higher taxes and unemployment insurance payment will discourage corporations from automating. b) replacing people through automation to reduce production cost will result in increase of other cost of corporations c) many workers who lose their jobs to automation will have to be retained for new jobs d) corporations that are laying people off will eventually rehire many of them. e) these steps will have an adverse impact on the mindset of the involved workers.
which of the following if true , most strengthens the author's argument? 1. many workers who have already lost their job to automation have been unable to find new jobs.
2. the initial investment in machinery for automation is often greater than the short term savings in labour cost.
3. taxes and unemployment insurance are paid also by corporations that are not automating .
4. most of the new jobs created by the automation pays less than the jobs eliminated by automation did
5 automation has increased the demand for the workers who could handle these equipment.

sorry double post
Confused between 1st and 2nd. The word "other" in the second option is confusing, as it is not clear what all does "other" includes. Had it been "taxes and unemployment insurance payment" instead of "other", then answer would have been straight forward and option 2. I'll go with option 1.
