Just as a bicycle chain may be too tight, so may ones carefulness and conscientiousness be so tense as to hinder the running of ones mind.
1. Which one of the following most closely parallels the reasoning used in the argument above?
(A) Just as a clock may be wound too tightly, so may ones time be spent fruitlessly in the pursuit of perfection

(C) Just as a machine may be oiled too much, so may ones heavy drinking of alcoholic beverages lead to complete dissipation
(D) Just as a raging river may be frozen into stillness during the winter, so may ones career falter at certain times of the year
(E) Just as a boxer may become too tense before a big fight, so may ones personal concerns stand in the way of professional success

While Governor Verdant has been in office, the states budget has increased by an average of 6
percent each year. While the previous governor was in office, the states budget increased by
an average of 11.5 percent each year. Obviously, the austere budgets during Governor
Verdants term have caused the slowdown in the growth in state spending.
Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the conclusion drawn above?
(A) The rate of inflation in the state averaged 10 percent each year during the previous
governors term in office and 3 percent each year during Verdants term.
(B) Both federal and state income tax rates have been lowered considerably during Verdants
term in office.
(C) In each year of Verdants term in office, the states budget has shown some increase in
spending over the previous year.
(D) During Verdants term in office, the state has either discontinued or begun to charge private
citizens for numerous services that the state offered free to citizens during the previous
governors term.
(E) During the previous governors term in office, the state introduced several so-called
austerity budgets intended to reduce the growth in state spending

My take on this is A since it explains reduced inflation rate which in turn clarifies no need for a higher state budget. I presume inflation rate is inversely proportional to growth.

What's the OA?

Nitrogen Dioxide is pollutant emitted by automobiles.Catalytic converters, devices designed to reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions, have been required in all new cars in Donia since 1993,and as a result, nitrogen dioxide emissions have been significantly reduced throughout the country. Yet although the proportion of new cars in Donia's capital city has always been comparatively high, nitrogen dioxide emissions have shown only an insignificant decline since 1993.

Which of the following, if true, most helps to explain insignificant decline in nitrogen dioxide emissions in Donia's capital city.

A. More of the cars in Donia's capital city were made before 1993 than after 1993

B. The number of new cars sold per year in Donia has decline since 1993

C. Pollutants other than nitrogen dioxide emitted by automobiles have been significantly reduced in Donia since 1993

D. Many Donians who own cars made before 1993 have had catalytic converters installed in their cars

E. Most car trips in Donia's capital city are too short for the catalytic converter to reach its effective working temperature

You can easily eliminate all other choices except A and E. How do you choose the right answer between them ?:banghead:

The answer should be D in my opinion, since if the cars are already having catalytic converters before 1993, it would hardly vary after 1993

In my opinion it should be E.

Indeed, it is E. Would you care to offer an explanation? Why not A?

In my opinion it should be E.

i. Proper allocation of resources is required for the overall development of our economy.
ii. Government has decided to allocate the gas from KG basin to power fertiliser sector.
iii. A court decision against the declared policy guidelines can result in government intervention in the form of an appeal.

Out of the number of foreign workers by industry in 1998, the top was 71, 198 in
the manufacturing industry, followed by 24,752 in the service industry. Out of
the number of foreign workers, as per the types of jobs, 70,173 were production
process workers and 21,983 were professionals, engineers and administrators.
According to the Ministry of Justice, at the end of 1997, foreigners living in Japan
who registered under the Alien Registration Law were about 1.5 million. 83.6% of
those with engineering skills and 87% of those with technical skills were from
Asian countries, and 66% of those with education skills were from North America.
Person of which country has the highest probability of getting a job as technical
co-ordinator in an auto firm in Japan?
(1) France (2) U.S.A.
(3) Singapore (4) U.K.

That was a shocker !!! Never seen such question in GMAT.
After going through the details thrice, I guess the answer should be 3. Singapore.

I think most of the information given here are irrelevant to get to the answer. Only the last information gives the clue that Asians have better chance of getting a technical job in Japan. Hence 3.

What is the OA ?
OA is 3)singapore

A Florida residential communitys debut on the World Wide Web had a very specific

Europe, the Caribbean, Canada and the northeastern US.

Answer to the classic problem is E

Silver is especially and repetitively savage about what he sees as the extravagant claims made for particle physics, arguing that once the proton, neutron, and electron were found and their properties experimentally confirmed, the very expensive searches for ever more exotic particles, such as the Higgs Boson, were increasingly harder to justify other than by their importance to particle physicists. Most of the particles resemble ecstatic happiness: They are very short-lived and have nothing to do with everyday life. His repeated assault goes to the level of sarcasm: "Finding the Higgs Boson will be a magnificent technical and theoretical triumph. Like a great Bobby Fisher game". Of course, this is a tad unfair, even if some of the claims of its practitioners invite such assaults on their field.
Which of the following, if true, will weaken the argument described in the passage?

(1) All streams of new science need to undergo through a period of uncertainty and we should not criticize research in particle physics alone.

Widespread use of lectures in class-rooms in business schools leads to severe negative consequences. The first consequence is theoretically knowledgeable graduates who cannot apply theory to solve real world problems. The more serious consequence is that lectures encourage a feeling of total omniscience among them which persists for quite some time after graduating. This feeling prevents "them from learning from their subordinates and colleagues.
Which of the following can best help to reduce these negative consequences among the students in a business school?

(4) Modify the pedagogy to have knowledge of theory and application in parallel.

My take in bold!!!!!!!!!

Social roles may either conflict or cooperate within any given person, depending upon the circumstances. They conflict when the behaviour patterns demanded by one role cannot be performed while performing the second role. Thus, one cannot easily be a saintly rake or a feminine brut, but given an understanding husband, a woman can be both a loving wife and a loving mother with no conflict between the roles.
Which of the following methods is used by the author to make his or her point?

E. Using paradox to highlight an implicit contradiction

Due to extreme poverty in italy between 1870 and 1930, almost 41/2 million italians - most of whom were farmers - immigrated to united states. The wave from italy reached its height in the 10 year span between 1920 and 1930, when italians comprised 12 percent of the total number of immigrants admitted to the united states. The majority of these italian immigrants were from southern italy and sicily, and upon their arrival, they settled along east coast, with the heaviest concentrations in cities such as New York, Boston and Philadelphia, though some made the arduos trip across the country to settle in northern california.

The statements above, if true, support which of the following?

A. The american descendants of those early italian immigrants outnumber the current population of italy.
B. Many American farmers today are descendants of italians.
C. The strong euro has contributed to the sharp decline in italian immigrants.
D. An Italian immigrant to america today is still likely to be from southern italy or sicily.
E. At the turn of the 19th century, the southern portion of italy was a prominent agricultural region.
