Two telephone poles a and b feet in length are placed x feet apart. Lines are drawn from the top of each pole to the bottom of each other. How many feet above the ground will two lines intersect'?

Please explain the answer

Use basic concept of similarity of triangles.

n/p = x/a
==> n = px/a ..............(1)

Also, m/p = x/b
==> m = px/b .............(2)

Add (1) and (2), m + n = px[1/a + 1/b]
But m + n = x, so,

p = ab/a+b

A circle goes through the point (8,0), (0,6) and (0,10). Find the x coordinate of the center of the circle.

Please explain

Refer to the diagram. The circle goes through the given points A, B & C and circumscribes the triangle ABC. The centre of the circle is the circumcentre of the triangle ABC. Let's find circumradius (R) first.
We know that-
Area of Triangle ABC = (AB x BC x AC)/4R

By Pythagorus Theorm,
AB = 10
AC = 164^1/2
And BC = 10-6 = 4.

Now,
Area of Triangle ABC = [Area of triangle APC - Area of triangle APB]
= [40 - 24]
= 16

Circumradius, R = (AB x BC x AC)/4 x Area triangle ABC
= (10 x 4 x 164^1/2)/4 x 16
= 8

Now, In triangle ONC,
OC = 8
NC = 2, we have to find ON {ON is the x coordinate of the centre of the circle}

Apply Pythagorus Theorm again to find ON = 60^1/2 = 7.75 (approx)

Hope it helps !!
