Frustrated and I need some inspiration/advice

your overall profile is decent. its not an easy task to be a national level player. concentrate on the written exams, keep updated on current-affairs, improve your general awareness, and most importantly know yourself well. be frank in the interview, you'll do fine. people with worse profile have made it to IIMs this year.

only prob though is SPJain most probably won't take you, so better not waste money on the form, c'mon just one top-10 skool less doesn't make much of a difference. there is MDI- a rocking school which give maximum weightage to CAT score.

and also IIM A's this years call-giving criteria was 70%+ in 10th and 12th. but then again who knows they might change that next year to average of 10th and 12th 70%+, then u too will hav a chance. y i'm saying this is bcoz last year their criteria was heavily tilted towards those with >90% in 10th & 12th. this year came down to a lower limit of 70. who knows what will happen next time.

and lastly something which has been said over a hundred times in PG

STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE PAST. THINGS WHICH ARE DONE WITH. THINGS YOU CAN'T GO BACK AND CHANGE NOW. FOCUS ON THE EXAMS.

Thanks a lot sir....
sir one more question i would like to ask is
my quant is fair enough but when it comes to VA... too tough for me...
i am reading editorial and novels from around 4 months but have not encountered much change...
the problem is in recalling stage in RC's....
please recommend me some trick to overcome that...
I am sorry but this is really bad advice for more reasons than one.

First of all the "street children" are not something provided to you as a handy object to improve your profile.
...
So do stuff that will give you skills and pleasure for a long time and not something that you wrongly perceive can fool the adcom to believing that you are the ideal candidate.

Cheers

i think i'm misunderstood in my last post. its my fault, in a hurry i miscommunicated.

some clarifications

i never intended to say that we should exploit the street children for our selfish pursuits. if they don't ask anything about the gap during the interview thats fine. but what if they do?
what i actually meant was you can't just say in the interview you were sitting at home for one whole year preping for CAT. instead you can tell them that since you didn't have any immediate financial responsibilities (like behen ki shadi etc. ) you took a break from studies and instead of doing a salaried job you did your bit for the society in your free time. then you can elaborate further about how enriching the experience was and what positive impact it had on you.
in a nutshell do it only if you really want to and if you do, put your heart in it (half-hearted work can never be social work) so that you can speak of an activity during the gap year. even if your purpose is still selfish, whats the prob yaar, at least you're doing something good, something positive so what if only for one year. how many people have time to do even this much? in fact you will feel contended that you did your bit, no matter how insignificant.

coming to my second point, i might have exaggerated a bit but still there's nothing wrong with the message that i put forward. there's nothing ridiculous about it. top b-schools expect you to be passionate about at least one thing. so when you say you have a hobby, they expect you to be an aficionado. eg. i like driving --> what's an MPFI engine?? now you can't say that driving is something you do in your free time and knowing whats MPFI is a mechanic's job not yours!!!

read this
Before you step into that interview | Joka Times

and yes the cfa and ncfm/amfi stuff is only for those interested in finance. SPJain for exampe doesn't give profile based finance calls to those who haven't cleared CFA L1.

and yes i never said do all this just to impress the panel. do only things that you like doing, you'll do well, MBA or no MBA.

Cheers!!

Many people work as an IT professional and then apply to B-schools. So while you'll certainly get marks for work-experience, the experience won't be counted as extraordinary, like for doctors, or army personnel etc. But anyway, you need not think about it. Just work in any of the companies you mentioned and prepare well for CAT and other exams. If you score well in the exams, other things will fall in place.

i had an accident in class 10th just before the boards . so had to use a writer and got just 68 % in 10th boards my school ppl told me not to waste an yr as they will give me science as they knew i was good... i got 78% in 12th and 75 in my engineering but i will never get an iim call with this marks in 10th.. i got a 97.5% in my 2nd attempt at cat this yr.. want to do an mba from good b school and i know i have the talent too but most b schools these days look at profile.. even nmims rejected me in the interview even after getting 99%tile and later told me that u hv i am feeling so low as all my frnds got into good b schools and am still struggling just because i have an average acads and now i can't change it too .. donno if i wil ever be able to make it to a good b school...

hmmm..well this is a geniune case. I guess you should try for FMS as thats purely on your written performance and how you do in your GD/PI. But you really dont need to feel low as there are a lot of things that you can do. All you need to do is some research on B-schools and their selection procedure. I sure you'll find a lot of colleges where your candidature wont be affected becus of your 10th marks. All the best. Keep trying, success will follow.

P.S: for any query on which colleges you can aim for you can get in touch with the mods or the PGMadcapz.

Hello puys!!..
today i want to discuss my problem which is killing me from the day when results of JEE is disclosed..............unfortunately i was not in list of lucky IITians....

from that day i lost confidence within me.....
as far as my performance in college is concern...it is creditable.....
but whenever i think of cracking any national exam(like CAT here),thoughts of those unsuccessful efforts envisage my mind....
actually problem is more wired..
Graph of my prep. is sinusoidal.......i work wonderfully for (let say) n no. of days....and after that, those old thoughts (including other things ) leads me below X-axis for n/4 no. of days......and again n wonderful days comes in my life in which i strive to overcome loses of n/4 disastrous days...
but at the end of month i encounter my target to be defeated................
the problem is INCONSISTENCY........

PLEASE..
friends..
help me to doff those n/4 days of my life........
please throw some pearls of wisdom which would help to inculcate consistency in my attitude towards prep. and leads me towards my target.....

@ nikunj... It seems u have good quant...! The writing skill is also cool...so VA is a strength...! Even the way u analysed ur problem was remarkable...so u will take care of LR/DI....! I dont think anything can stop u from cracking the cat....!

Start reading inspirational books like the magic of your subconscious mind, the magic of believing, the fountainhead,Atlas shrugged..
U need inspiration in ur life seriously.Read mahatma gandhi's my experiments with truth and u'll see marked improvements in you very soon.
I would also advice meditation. If you are not an avid reader you can start with Robin sharma.
I am sorry for giving so long lecture esp on books but i strongly feel you need focus in your life and books according to me are best source for the same..

Adding to what activepagol said, you need to keep reminding yourself of the positive times, or the times you've worked hard. In terms of your language, you need to remind yourself of the crests of the sine curve, rather than the troughs 😃 It's a small thing but could prove very helpful. Most of the problems are with the mind, and if you can control your mind a bit, your work would be much easier.

hey Nikunj, i face the same problem , i cant carry the same momentum for a long time. but you can use this flaw too..
let me tell you, you work for n days with hard work, and then your concentration and dedication hits a bottom low for n/4 days.. right...
consider that as a break from the hard work u r doing and read some good books, some motivational ones like seven habbits of highly successfull people or best one right now i would say is Everything you desire at IIM by Harshdeep Jolly, it will make you aware of the life you will be undergoing at PG and keep your dreams alive...

You can first start with some fiction novels of your interest and then move to non- fiction real- content novels.

Plus if you read more and more books, eventually it will improve your VA too...
I tell you my Time faculty asked me to develop this reading habbit and VOLA my VA percentile shot from 52.xx in CAT'08 to 97 in CAT'09...

Nikunj, Do what ever you want but don't read the book "everything you desire" when and if you do, Your desire to live might not last long

More opinions and reviews here -> Everything You Desire by Harshdeep Jolly

I am an avid lover of books (On the verge of writing one too) and if you want to improve your language skills then i will tell you a very easy way - Avoid all NEW POPULAR INDIAN FICTION. Period. The Indian authored course books should have been enough "fiction" for you already. If you read them then your comprehension skills might as well degrade. Apart from that they might prove to be very bad for your mind and body and might cause you irreversible damage and cause dementia at a very early age.

Avoid crap by all means. Read less but read good. Reading bad stuff won't help. Don't read cheap copies. Always and always read originals.

Refrain from IIT/IIM authors - They are a truck full of $hi# for anyone who has any respect towards literature and has read enough books. Some of them may provide some info on a local basis but otherwise are of absolultey no help. India is a brand crazy nations that looks upto Technology and Management students for literature which is a shame and it is a shame if you actually evaluate them on an intellectual plane. Want to read Indian stuff, read old Indian stuff or books that have won prizes in literature.

Remember the golden rule -> You can be in IIM/IIT and write dumb books to get praised and appraisal but you can't be outside and afford to read the same

On a altogether different note, How does it actually help you to know about a B-School or an Engineering School before you get in there? It motivates you? Well, I am hoping you are motivated enough ad if so then please use your time to gain knowledge over just plain pleasure/pain reading. Why kill beat one cat to death with a book while you can kill two?

For your confidence: I can just tell you one thing- Unless you understand that you have to get self-confidence to win, i dont think you should go to battle because it will only prove futile and will demoralise you more for future wars.
Another way to put it When you win the Heart, Mind and Soul, the body is won as well since its just but a manifestaion of the the same.

One line to sum up my principle-
"Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win." - Sun Tzu's Art of War, 6th Century BC, China.

i face the same problem as you, i'm not an expert in VA but here are some techniques which has helped me a bit:

as written in arun sharma's book, first change the approach towards VA, it is not an english language test, VA is more about logic than language.

there's an inseparable connection between logic and language, ques like RC, FIJ test your ability to grasp the logic that is communicated.

in RC, after u read each para, write in ur rough sheet what the author is trying to tell you in one line against the para number.

when you see ques related to that idea, read the corresponding para again. you can eliminate some of the options which is deviating from the main idea.

as you read keep thinking, what exactly does the writer wants to say and in what way. try to judge the tone of writing- happy, sad, bitter, descriptive/narrative, optimistic, pessimistic, critical, analytical, satirical, sarcastic, nostalgic, euphemistic etc. there are clues in the passage that'll help u in this

eg. optimistic passage ends on a hopeful and positive mood in contrast to a generally gloomy start.

critical passage often use bitter and harsh words, use humour, ridicule and mockery. they often start off positively but proceed downhill from there.

and so on.

if you can judge the tone of the passage correctly, it will help you in eliminating some of the options.

solve some RCs from good books and tally ur answers. analyse your answers, how you got it right as well as why yuo got it wrong. with time n practice u'll b able to identify patterns.
