Here is my Opinion on it , will bring out a different side to it perhaps as i am a commerce/management student.
Lets start off with my Profile
10th -80% - CBSE
12th -81% ( Commerce) - CBSE
Graduation - BBA from IP University - 73.2%
I have around 13 months of work ex with Hewitt Associates which now of course is Aon Hewitt.
This is my 2nd attempt at these entrances , last year didnt do well as i couldnt juggle the entrances and job at the same time , Quit my Job in July and spend over 5 months preparing , the gap was justified on paper as i was working as a part time Computer Teacher in a primary NGO School.
Scored 91.47% in CAT ( Screwed LR Majorly just got 42 in it , the reason for this being i gave the exam in the last week of CAT , for days i saw it being posted on PG that LRDI was tough , calculation intensive and stuff , the last 40 minutes of my CAT were a waste , i was frozen due to it actually turning out tough , nobody else to blame except me)
XAT Scored 98%ile
Cleared NMAT's cutoff but as my score was 211 didnt appear for GDPI , scored 105 in SNAP which i thought would be enough but of course wasnt , missed TISS by 0.25.
Calls I had via CAT were - FORE , LBS , TAPMI , SOMAIYA , IMT Ghaziabad , XIME , IFMR baring IMT G converted all didnt appear for Somaiya Wellingkar IFMR though as Goa's result was out by then
Calls Via XAT were - XLRI HRM , LIBA , GIM ( was stupid not to fill XIMB , never thought i'd do so well in XAT ) over here converted all expect the big One ie XLRI.
Here comes the point now , I had a brilliant GDPI , where my entire PI was build around Hewitt Associates ( as it is the worldwide leader in HR and recruits heavily from XLRI , with my HR and Management related profile wasnt asked any of the usual stuff why MBA , why HR and stuff.
I was extremely pleased with it , thought id easily convert , then came the SHOCK i wasnt even waitlisted.
Then i saw so many people who had converted HRM posting basic stuff on PG , What is HRM , its Scope , Roles it Offers and who were equally clueless about in the PI and still Converted and here am I who literally breathes HR and showed the same in the PI and i was rejected.
The Only reasons i could deduce for this was perhaps my age am just 22 , the quantity of the work ex , or the one which hits me the hardest , My Profile , my not being an engineer , am seeing so many people posting on PG in the thread "Profiles of those people who have converted IIM's " couldn't find a single BBA or a Commerce Student , and those whom i know in real life , ie Commerce Students in these 3-4 Biggies have huge Chunk of Work Ex.
Which Basically leads me to the point , is there no way in for a relative fresher like me to enter the Big 3-4? Unless and until I forgo my dream of an MBA for three to Four Years ?
Trust Me , I have nothing against engineers , i do not want a reservation or anything of that sort. Only want that atleast when it comes to HR , XLRI HR , people who actually want to do HR or know about it should make it and not be rejected for unknown reasons :/
My dream was always to do an MBA since i saw my cousins passing out of NMIMS and Wellingkar when i was in 8-9 , and my dream went well with my communication and leadership skills , i always thought the logical and the best part to follow this dream would have been to take up Commerce , wish somebody had been there then in 2004 to tell me even to do an MBA the best way would be to take up Science , and that BBA is not the best Prelude for MBA , its a weird way where the Bachelors Course isnt the best way ahead for a MASTERS.
I am joining GIM , extremely pleased with what that place offers , brilliant infrastructure , good ROI , esteemed faculty etc.
I hope all this wasnt too long !
And just want to add further that i do not want any inspiration as I am very happy with GIM , for me simply an Institute shows its class by the people who belong to it and how they treat those who are striving to make it there , and the seniors of GIM are nothing short of Fantastic
Frustrated Yes I was , atleast for a couple of days after the XLRI Result , But not anymore am over it!
hi ... i see this thread is for frustrated and confused puys.. i am one of them..
I got three results in one day with decreasing level of happiness..
Morning 8 saw that i got selected in NIT T
evening saw that got IMT N
Night saw that was rejected by TAPMI
Statistically there cant be a more balanced day i guess..:lookround:
Though i was reallllllly happy for NIT T results .. i was equally sad for the other two..i know i didnt get a very high percentile for IMT G but the interview was the best one i had ever given in my life...i was proud of the answers that i gave ..and they looked impressed...one of my sr.s got in IMT G with my percentile
For Tapmi.. it was a stress interview..but one of the interviewers came out and appreciated me in front of other applicants.. he also called me personally and told me that i was very calm inside and that my approach to the situation was really nice and many many things ...The deans interview went equally good ..I was expecting a call from TAPMI ..i was sure of it .. the way i am sure that i am breathing ...and really i believe in humility..but it went really well ..i thought a personal appreciation meant that..
But.. the results were nt at all as expected ..
There is only one reason that i can see for my rejection in TAPMi and one for IMT G.:drinking:
Tapmi because i thought it is an ethical college which loves honesty and i said that i wud love to join Soamiya personally..only because it is in mumbai which is my home now .. but i added that it was just a thought and i will check once i hve the options .. my bro is passout from Manipal..i told them all that and they were convinced.. i thought honesty matters but i guess not... they just wanna here wat they like (why do u have wait lists then)
For IMT i think they select on percentile basis only..they have a defined set of brckets and cnt forget it..common yaar ..even harvard excepts low scores if the guys are good..
Now i feel like all that appreciation was nothing but bull shit..all that matters is not what u are..but the score that u have got ..the statistics u have with u ...humility honesty ethics they dont hold good.. i had an avg PI in NIT T but i lied and said that i wud join NIT T.. i got thru ..
I have two sides of the world to me ..one where ppl are putting up emotional success stories and another where the ppl from lesser known MBA colleges are hardly seen any where, there profile hardly grows.. i dont know what to believe in ..where to look what to follow..
I know i want to do an MBA ..i need to .. i am from hospitality industry( interesting profile)..i left my job which took 14 hrs of my day including travel in mumbai to prepare forthis CAT ..i cant go back and join any hotel or other business coz that wud mean 14 hrs again..
I am confused and sad ..sad as i didnt get a good college..confused as to whether i should join NITT or shud take another year of drop..experienced puys please help ...
P.S- to the person who created this thread.. thank u very much..at least there is one place where a person can share his grief and his worries and doesnt have to pretend that he/she is happy

@jane:
bro if u can wait for another year then i'll suggest u to wait.
don't lose hope...try to improve on ur written scores and u'll do good...people don't drop another year due to various reasons...if u don't have any such reason then wait for another year..it will do good only to u...

1.yaar working and studying can be done together ...most of the students in MBA are having work-ex...so u dont have to leave ur job...from May till Oct if u study 3-4 hours a day, then its more than enough...only thing u have to make sure is that u stick to a particular time table...u may leave ur job once the written xams r over and u have enough calls which will give u confidence that u can crack atleast one of the b-school...seems like u have a call from somaiya...i think it's a decent b-school and u can stay with it...but if u think u can give one more try then go for it...but i'll suggest u not to leave ur job...my case was worse..i hardly had time in weekdays to study but i used to study for hours in weekends...u'll learn to manage ur time and u'll know how to find balance b/w work nd study for sure
anyways...for how long u work in a day???
2. Sorry about the gender confusion!
3. how come u have so many groans????
PS: i know it doesn't feel good when u try ur best to achieve something and yet u find urself nowhere. i have gone thru same phase. life moves on and so should we. just consider the bitter experience as a learning experience and move on. after CAT fiasco i had 3 calls...all of them were unexpected calls...got unexpected convert also...so in the end it's not always the wrong thing that happens...
converted sibm-b & nit-t.
any idea abt its placements.
which 1 is a better option to join?
...u may leave ur job once the written xams r over and u have enough calls which will give u confidence that u can crack atleast one of the b-school...seems like u have a call from somaiya...i think it's a decent b-school and u can stay with it...but if u think u can give one more try then go for it...but i'll suggest u not to leave ur job...my case was worse..i hardly had time in weekdays to study but i used to study for hours in weekends...u'll learn to manage ur time and u'll know how to find balance b/w work nd study for sure

3. how come u have so many groans????
hmm...i am desperately waiting for somaiya..i think if i can convert that i will stick to it..
My shift was from 8.30 to 6 (on papers)..but u know travelling in mumbai takes a lot of time..i started from my house at 7 and cud return only by 8.30 -9 ...
About groans..i have no idea...i have started using PG regularly recently..
..its like i am making a record or some thing..which colleges have u converted
heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Hey puys, I wanted to share some of my experience that I feel will make u feel better.
As for my background, I have very good academic background,(89 in 10th and 91 in 12), engineer from Manipal (CGPA-9.1
and have been working for the past 8 months. I have no gaps and have a lot of extra curricular too. I thought I would get easily through some good b-schools.. How wrong I was.
Here's the ground reality. I gt calls from IIM I,S,SIBM,IMT,MDI,NMIMS,XLRI. (CAT score > 98 %ile)
IIM Shillong - Reject(HAd an awesome GD/PI)
SIBM - Reject (Do i need to say anything about this one!!!
)
MDI - Waitlisted (Very remote chance of PGPM, they have actually given their ranks in decreasing order of the applicants' CAT %ile, No weightage to GD/PI or profile whatsoever, Wasnt expecting this from MDI 😞 )
XLRI - Reject (No weightage to past profile of candidate. This wasnt the case just with me. Although I had a very good GD/PI, but lets assume that I screwed, but there are so many ppl I know, so many friends who had evrything (good profile, work-ex, comm. skills, good GD/PI, good score in XAT) still rejected. And I know 2 ppl who did not have any of these, they plainly lied about how they wnated to improve this country, the towns they hail from they got through, straight converts (although now both of them are talking about the international placements of XLRI :P).
These are just my experiences and I have not written all of them. I worked my ass off to get into good indian b-school. I had so much hope because I had everything that an ideal MBA candidate is supposed to have. Still here I am, being laughed at as a loser, watching the biggest losers pass by.
I am done with indian MBAs. I am really done with them. Had so much respect for these colleges. But seriously not any more.
Guys a bit of advice, dont worry. Keep preparing but dont hope that u ll get thru if u study more. Its a completely different ball game out here. As for me, Well, I have given GMAT got 700. I ll start applying to some universities. I am off!!!!
PS - These are completely personal opinions and not intended to hurt anybody. However if they do, I apologize for it. Feedback will be appreciated.
srktugga SaysHi Puys.I have written everything this season.IIFT,CAT,JMET,SNAP,XAT,FMS.I thought i did well in SNAP but got only 88.5.I thought i would get a call from SIIB and SIBM-B.But it did'nt happen. This Feb,I will be completing 36 months in Accenture.I am really frustrated and worried abt my future.Im writing NMAT,MAHCET and MICA.I am not able to give my best to NMAT and other future exam preparations.Dreams of an MBA are slowly withering away.Someone plz tell me what to do.
brother..... don get angry and frustrated...and in this process don loose vision....the best thing u can do is to take a one year sabbatical from accenture(which i am sure they ll give... negotiate with ur proj manager and HR, don give up if they refuse...tell them u need some respite and get t somehow).... next, join a good coaching institute...my personal fav is time...u cn select IMS or time based on ur requirements.... third, focus on all three legs of a competitive exam ranging between quants, verbal and DI(believe me....u ll v to be extra extra strong in these)....and once u r done wid ur results...face the gd/pi widout any fear or worries(afterall, u ve a job to which u cn return to anyday)....with relentless dedication and determination u ll ultimately end up in one f the bests.....
P.S:- woah!! look @ me writing essays on hardwork and positive attitude(such words i write...)
cheers bro...f anyone can do it...then we can do it....

which colleges have u converted
seeing ur shift timings i can understand how difficult it is for u to work nd study both...but i would still suggest you not to leave the job...at first it might prove to be difficult for u but eventually u'll get accustomed to it..
i've got final convert in nmims actuarial science...have joined nmims and waiting for some other results now...

Hi folks, am in a major dilemma
10th - 84%
12th - 59%
Diploma in EC - 79%
Btech in EC - 70%
Passed out in 2010. Hate s/w to the core, infact technology for that matter. Unfortunately, had to spend six long years in doing what i absolutely hate. Relating academic score to the level of interest is stupidity. I tried to give my best as i have a tendency to be sincere in whatever i take up.
Now, the problem is, i work as an intern in a very good (according to the industry standards) R&D; embedded communication software company. I have no clue if i'll be absorbed. After i am done with it and not absorbed, I'll have two options, either to find a job in s/w (which will mean i'll torture myself) or find a job which might help me later after my MBA (say, in advertising or HR) or third, should i go for CAT prep fulltime?
After spending six long years should i find another job in s/w (
) ?
Again, i am aware of the fact that atleast 2 years of work-ex proves to be beneficial but s/w!!!! Noooooo.
Horribly frustrated. Please help!!!

I wont console you. In fact my results are pretty similar to yours and one of the facts that I have realized that season is that telling truth in interviews can be harmful. Its always good to bluff and be more tactful rather than open up in an interview.
I also had XLRI BM and HRM both calls and I was more than frank in both those interviews. I also have a reasonable decent profile. But I really found it difficult to gauge what XLRI was looking for. Anyways my friend in IIMB said that if you dont get through a college consider that it was the college's fault rather than yours.
Have similar opinion like you though. Will give GMAT and try for a foreign MBA next year. For the record see this interview of Allwin Agnel , Pagalguy founder. He was rejected by IIMK but was selected at Wharton and Oxford. In his interview he mentions that Indian Bschools evaluate people more as an entity rather than an individual. After this years interviews cant agree more.
