@gajamani Can we sit in the PGP Placement process after FPM is done... Or not.. And i want to know it for all the IIMs and specially for Kozhikode and rohtak, If by any chance you know this..
got a call for RAT from IIMB for CSP. I have gone through the previous posts and I have one question in that regard about the area specific paper. What kind of essay or research paper would it be and what are we expected to do and any tips on the interview for CSP and can anyone tell me more about Prof. Chandra Shekar in CSP
Also, I have been told that Economics and Public Policy have the same Area specific test at IIM-B. Can anybody please tell me which all areas to read about and focus on...just a broad idea will help. Thanks
@shanti.swaroop as far as I know CSP didnt have specific tests in past years. If there is one this year, take any research paper in a peer reviewed journal from google scholar to get some idea. Prof Chandra Shekhar is retiring in a month or two, this is all I know abt him apart from the info on his IIMB profile page.
@kartik_ dont about Eco, I guess they dont have any such tests. Public policy will ask you to write brief analytical opinion pieces on issues of current policy relevance eg. health/education/environment/growth etc.
@GauravPuri IIMB is the only IIM which has completely segregated FPM from PGP at the moment, So the placement process for FPM at IIMB is indep of PGP process and is managed by FPM student cell. We invite companies separately based on interest level of the batch passing that year. So in short, no, you cant sit with PGP. But if there are research openings in a company and you are interested, the student cell can invite th company. The touchpoiint to company is common for both PGP and FPMs, so we still have the leverage. But the schedules are different !
@shanti.swaroop As @RD11 said focus on reading and understanding research papers. Case analysis is another exercise which is also given. The focus of the exercise is to test your reading, understanding, logical arguments, and articulation skills. Since there is no one right answer to such questions, it is only a question of logical arguments and clear articulation of those arguments that are expected . I cant see how one can prepare for this in short notice, unless it is innate. So i am unable to recommend any prep for this.
@kartik_ economics did have area specific test last year and was general essay based. You be on top of emergent issues in indian economy so that you can write an essay to argue for or against a particular policy initiative. The focus of the exercise is in your anility to present logical arguments and articulation skills. So cant really advise any prep !. I suggest read the newspaper for thr past one month, esp budget, fiscal crises etc. related to keep yourself aware. Cant suggest anything more, as anything can be given as a topic !
@shanti.swaroop it may sound cliched, but the interview is very individual specific as each candidate is different in terms of their background, profile and sop. In general the interview in CSP would last for 15-40 min and they look for depth not breadth of your understanding and analytical thinking. A few concept related question might be asked, but more or less they would try to test your interest and ability to do research. So questions would be asked to test that. If you have work ex, expect a few questions on that. In fact if you are comfortable then try to keep the interview around work ex only!
My interview was really short (10 min), all they wanted to know is why I have applied in strategy (when my profile was more suitable for public policy) and would I leave my job (which was a research job) to join IIMB.
@GauravPuri adding to what @gajamani said, if placement is the reason you want to join FPM, please think twice, and carefully. FPM does not train you for PGP-type managerial roles, it trains you for research. So really if research doesnt interest you, you may face these problems after joining:
1. you wont enjoy the program, and since you hv to be here for 4-5 yrs, it might become a torture! This might not sound serious right now, but people in the past have got quite frustrated and unhappy!
2. you will waste 4-5 yrs in doing something that is not aligned with your goals, doing an MBA would take you there in 2 yrs and in better way.
3. Staying on same campus and seeing PGPs, you might not feel great about yourself if you dont value the difference and not clear about your choice.
So my suggestion would be, think a bit more on why you want to do FPM?
I am selected for FPM at XLRI. The specialization is Information Systems. I also have NMIMS core mba convert in my hand. Still waiting for XLRI HRM BM results. I am from mumbai and many people have told me that NMIMS mumbai is a good deal. FPM at XLRI must be a great course I am sure...but its 4 years duration. And I am not really clear hw one spends his 4 years. Because personally I dont know anybody who has done FPM. I have talked with many people and most have suggested me to go for NMIMS instead of FPM. Also the fact that many people did not even turn for FPM interviews at XLRI, Jamshedpur. I have gone through XL website and prospectus. But that is not helping me make any decision. I am inclining towards NMIMS right now. But XLRI is really big.... so I am very confused. Btw I have 3 years work ex in TCS. Any thoughts , suggestions from you are most welcome.
How the course is conducted... what are the skills required..... how u r assesed?...how rigorous / difficult it is? (I have always been strong academically but I am not from IIT / NIT)...what are the prospects after completion... what are the various job opportunities? .. anything in addition to this that u feel is relevant....
As I think more about it, I feel 4 years duration and Jamshedpur location seem to be the factors affecting me the most. I think I would have surely gone for FPM over NMIMS Mumbai even if XLRI was at Pune 😁 .. and on the other side I feel I am more of a reseacher / academic guy than a manager.
@experience123 I am not sure of the source of the info you shared. UGC recognizes FPM as an equivalent of PhD. So there is no bar on FPMs to apply for UGC recognized universities. In fact if you look at the application forms, they say PhD or equivalent. The only bar on FPMs is not to use Dr. as a prefix. However FPM students are free to write Mr. X, Ph.D as a suffix if they crave to declare their educational qualification so much !
@gajamani i got these from googling, however you are inside the FPM castle, so i think you are the best to clarify these doubts. usage of Dr is not important however applying to state universities for teaching position and validity of FPM compared to Doctorate is more important. Is it possible for you to check this with relevant people from FPM administration.
lastly, phD and FPM are equivalent but NOT equal. thats where all the confusions are!
@experience123 as FPMs you can apply to all Govt and Non Govt institutes...easy way is look up some of the best ones and you will find the profs there from IIM FPM...Even XLRI FPM is AICTE approved for such application
@experience123 we all know the 'state' of our state universities. Not sure how many would actually opt to teach at those universities compared to IIMs, at least I wont!
The other question is what is one's specialization in FPM. If its core functional areas like Marketing, Finance, Strategy, OBHR, Info. Sys.,POM, then the only place to teach/research is various B-schools and not Universities. Those who do FPM in Economics & QM may have opportunities at both places....but again the FPM being in a management institute, you would be trained with a certain perspective. So this kind of training is good for working in B-schools and they accept FPM degree. So why bother about the name of the degree as long as it serves the purpose it promises to!
@nitya.saxena One reason could be availability of rooms. Maybe the PGP batches haven't left for summers yet? BTW: The IIMK letter mentions a written test based on which candidates will be shortlisted for interview. Any idea what that test would be? RAT? Or a subject-based test? Or...?
Naah no idea, but it will be akin to CAT.. and there can be area specific test either case study or essay writing
