Finstructor, pristine, iqfi are decent names - but I do not have any first hand experience with any of them. All of these generally behave as coaching classes and the concepts clearing is left as an issue. So I remain a bit skeptical. If you have good enough time - do self or group study.
Hello. I am a third year UG student, pursuing my B-Tech in Manufacturing Science & Engg. I am giving serious thought to giving FRM this year. I am a complete novice when it comes to this exam... I went through the FRM thread, but I can't figure out how to go about the study material. Since 25% of the material changes every year, I am in a dilemma. The exam is tough and I would like to study for it now.. so I dont know which material to order now, and which I should order later. Also, I was thinking of ordering Schweswer notes from Laxmi or Om Xerox Centres. So, if the syllabus changes, do these centres also change the notes they print? Another thing, will Schweswer notes cover the info which is to be studied from books like Hull?
Let me not comment here on your need of doing FRM as a 3rd student in Engg and concentrate only on answering your queries :)
You have to get the current material to be able to target the questions asked in the exam. Old material that is common can be used but for the changed topics, you need the new material.
There are two sources of material
- Core Reading - this is published by GARP every year and can be bought from their site. If that appears too costly to you, you have choices - People like Om copy these notes and sell it for much cheaper. Else you can buy the main books covered in the syllabus and take the rest from your friends or source it somewhere else.
- Notes - these are summary notes for people who do not want to study the complete syllabus and just want to pass the exam. Schweser and Bionic Turtle are major providers. People like Om sell copies of Schweser notes for cheaper.
Now, your confusion - Om or Laxmi do NOT write these notes - they just facilitate piracy 😃 and make things cheaper. You will have to tell them that you need the latest notes. Obviously, 2013 notes are not release yet and you will only get 2012 notes if you order now.
You can either study from Core Readings or from Notes or both depending on your comfort level.
Details on the syllabus can be got from www.garp.org
Do not start asking simple questions like phone number of Om etc. You can easily find it through google or reading the previous posts.
I would suggest you start with the syllabus - and core readings / books since you have enough time and are new. Later, next year, you may want more material - tackle it later.
but i am not sure up to what extent they(bionicturtle) discuss with free members and there are many more forums but not sure if they do discuss FRM seriously.
undoubtedly frm is great but one bad aspect of frm or cfa is that after doing such courses, u hav to apply for jobs and count on your lunch but in case of mba, once u get into a decent bschool, more or less a great job is guaranteed, rest assured.
i am myself pursuing frm and undoubtedly it is good, just as good as cfa. i hav completed my bcom from st xaviers collg and started doing frm directly but as far as getting a job is concerned, i have to toil on my own for it. the GARP wont provide me a job (only in very few cases) after immediate completion of the course and satisfaction of other requirements. i have to hunt for a job on my own. so there is always a RISK or UNCERTAINITY factor, in case of getting a job, if a person wants to get one based on FRM ,solely thats not the case in mba.
if someone can help me regarding some source where one can look to for a job, based solely on my FRM degree, i would'nt be more glad 😃
Since you are starting with FRM, you may also want to consider APRM exam exam offered by PRMIA. Its relatively easier and is meant for people starting their career in risk management. Its a quick and effective way of strengthening your resume and later on you can get the PRM designation as well as it gives you an automatic credit for the exam IV of the PRM exam. So if your target is to become a PRM, wrtie the APRM exam first, get that designation and get credit to exam IV of PRM and then till the point you clear the other 3 PRM exams, you continue to leverage the APRM (Associate PRM) designation. The cost difference in the two approaches should be neglible.
hey people, i want to register for the frm program.....and as mentioned, it accepts only paymet through credit cards having VISA, MASTER CARD or AMERICAN EXPRESS. I dont own a credit card but i own an ATM-CUN-DEBIT card which is MASTER CARD recognised. can it be used for making the payment online. any extra processing charges included?
Specialized risk management certifications like FRM, PRM, APRM give you the right type of knowledge and skills to add value to risk management departments in banks, corporates and other financial institutions. Recognition in India is growing very fast and its becoming a competetive advantage.
Wanted to know about the paper. Is it a test of our speed also? I mean, paper being 4 hours, is there sufficient time to think and answer, considering the difficulty level; or do we need to be real quick?
Also, what are the approx number of theory/non calculative questions we can expect?
Is giving mocks necessary after mastering the concepts for part 1?
Hi I am a Business Intelligence Developer and Employed with a company that Prepares with the Risk Management softwares ....I have IT experience of 3.5 years including 1 year Risk management Reporting development experience... I am planning to do FRM to be a techno functional guy for that line of business ... I have few Questions :-
1) does my experience relevant
2) As i am frm IT background ... frm where i should start the preparation for May 2013 exam
3) Should i opt for both exam in single day or on diff dates (i am working and can devote 2 hr a day and 4-5 hr on weekends)
Thought of taking FRM Part II in November. However, I am left with just 45 days...and 80% of the syllabus (as I am going thru MBA in XLRI , finding it difficult to get time). Could you please opine whether it is a rational and realistic goal to go for the part II exam with 45 days left? How much efforts do I need to put in every day?
