Financial Risk Manager [FRM] by GARP

I ordered from Laxmi and did not get the QBank for level II, I got it last time for level I.

Thanks for the reply, Raksah. Are you from Mumbai? If so, did you follow up with Laxmi Xerox to find out when it will be available? It is hard trying to follow up with these jerks over the phone as they are pretty rude and frankly they are not concerned whether you receive the Qbank or not as they have gotten their money.

cool... correct

-drift*t +vol*sqrt(t)*deviate

= -12M + 1.732M*3.464*2.33 = 1.979 M

FRM does not have ex ante passing criteria. (meaning that you can't have a target to score).

Each of the topics is WEIGHTED (T1 = 20%, T2 = 20%, T3 = 30%, T4 =30%) but you have a single final score (Y). The average of the Top 5% is taken (T). GARP calibrates a ratio to control the overall passing ratio. So they set passing score (S) = some percentage of (T). For example, maybe this passing score S = 70% * T (It could be 70% or vary from year to year)

Hence if your Y >= S, you PASS

The grading is done on a curve and each topic has a different score curve.

Hope this helps.

hi,

sorry if this has been asked before....what is the approx pass mark for frm.....
is it like a certain percentage is required or is it like a certain percentage of takers wud pass....someone pls reply n help....
starting preps tomorrow...

This is definitely not focused on Risk Mgmt.

Looking at their curriculum
Curriculum - PGPSM
- Only two topics in RM
- Most of the concentration on Sec Mkts
- So the job prospect is primarily Sec Mkts

My suggestion would be to supplement it with CFA (atleast L1) if you are interested in an Equity Research career.

Hi Puys,
Today i saw an ad in TOI about NISM PGPSM. It is Post Graduate Program in Security Markets. It is 1 yr program intiative by SEBI. Does anyone have idea about it ? Is it usefull if one wants to get into Equity Reseach or Risk Managment ? I have 2 yrs Exp in IT in non Financial Domain but i have some grasp of Finance.

Yes and No !

It's difficult to give a straightforward answer, lot depends on so many factors...
FRM would help in showcasing one's ability and skills as a Risk Manager, it will not make one a consultant.
If one has a hardcore experience in RM, passing FRM is great synergy and consulting line is also a good choice.
However, consultants need not pass FRM unless they are focusing on RM.

If I haven't raised enough questions in your mind 😃 here's another one... It also depends on what kind of consulting you are referring to - Process Consulting, Strategy Consulting, Business Consulting, IT Consulting etc etc.

Hi ,

Is FRM certification relevant for someone pursuing a career in Consulting?

Thanks.

Wiener is a particular type of Markov stochastic process with mu 0 and sigma 1. (Hull ch12)

Reg QB etc - refer my earlier posts (1-2 pages back)

Hi Leo..

Thanks for the question.
However where did you get it from? ( I was wondering about Weiner Process!!)
I have QB from Laxmi Xerox + some questions at the end of each books.
Can you recommend whether that will be enough?
Or if I nee to go for some QB , can you recommend one? Finsructor / Prisitine?
So far I have almost covered the chapters ( 7-8 chapters are left). But havent solved any problems..:(
Would start solving problems + revision + question solving - please let me know what is the best way to go..
If you feel , please PM me.

Can somebody post the address of OM book store?

Hi Leolazer,

thanks for your reply... As suggested, I will surely go through all material available freely on the internet (hopefully!!)..

I am appearing for actuarial exams from both UK and Indian societies - depending on difficulty level of that particular exam.....

Well, the core stream of an actuary is indeed insurance (life and non life), but if you look at other areas where actuarial hopefuls can make their careers are Pension and Benefits / back office for US and UK actuarial firms, Auditing, Risk Management and certain areas of Financial Management. Risk management is good career option for an actuary - In fact, the society of actuaries have their own program called CERA - Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary

CERA - Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary qualification The Actuarial Profession

and also If I become certified FRM, I will get one of the exam exempted from the Specialist Technical Series (ST), known as ST0:

Exemption based on other professional qualifications The Actuarial Profession

I opted for FRM to,

1) Create differentiation with other fellow actuarial hopefuls, as it is very easy to find people with good progress in their actuarial exams in the job market (as many as 7-8 exams cleared, but with no work experience).

2) Chalk out newer areas to shape my career in...all my experience has been in Pensions and Benefit consulting work...

I hope this helps and apologies for an off-topic rant...

Maneet

hey do you know about anything about Enterprise risk managment i want to know about the course details and subjects and who hire them and whats the study material and everything if you can tell me its a gr8.....

can anyone tell me about Enterprenur risk managment (ERM) and everything about it and the difference between FRM and ERM. what are the subjects and fees where is paper gng to held, who hire them n all abt this .....

Correct

next..after each reading there are long questions no objective types right ?

These are chapters of books - one would generally not expect MCQ after chapters.

these core readings look so details n so complicated where as schwser looks so incomplete...wat do i do ? :(

Core readings are meant to be detailed study. Schweser are concise notes - not "incomplete".
You can shoose a style of studying as per your background, skill and time available.

One word answer - Study.
Long Answer - FRM is a professional exam, do not expect shortcuts. Even if one clears it by a shortcut, what will that person do when hardcore Rsk management knowledge is reqd to be applied in the industry or to clear an interview for that matter.

My suggestion - Try to concentrate on your strong areas, study hard and practice a lot of questions.

You can get material couriered from Mumbai, Om book centre provides courier services but they charge for it. No idea about any shop in Delhi. Or else you can take printouts of softcopy.

There are many variations in Level 1 and Level 2 syllabus. Go through the syllabus of both the exams you will get to know about the differences.
