Financial Risk Manager [FRM] by GARP

anyone know where to find BT material? plzz PM me.

Hi Leolazer,

Can you please tell us ( May L1 applicants) ,some good source(hard/soft copy) of practice papers. It will be helpful for all.

I read that sample/practice paper available from schweser is not sufficient . Is that the fact ?

Many thanks in advance.

Correct

These are chapters of books - one would generally not expect MCQ after chapters.

Core readings are meant to be detailed study. Schweser are concise notes - not "incomplete".
You can shoose a style of studying as per your background, skill and time available.

One word answer - Study.
Long Answer - FRM is a professional exam, do not expect shortcuts. Even if one clears it by a shortcut, what will that person do when hardcore Rsk management knowledge is reqd to be applied in the industry or to clear an interview for that matter.

My suggestion - Try to concentrate on your strong areas, study hard and practice a lot of questions.

Practice Papers from GARP are free for FRM paid candidates

Schweser ones are ok... whether they are sufficient? - well that is an open question.

Suggestion - the more the better.

Are you looking for the BT site Bionic Turtle: Excel Your Risk & Finance Career
I think not.

Since people who buy BT material (esp videos) pay a lot for them, and also that they are released in a phased manner... it is difficult to find the latest BT videos free on the net. You might be able to get 2010 or 2011 videos somewhere if you look hard, but don't waste your precious time looking for them. Rather, go for the free ones - you will get a wealth of knowledge here - bionicturtledotcom - YouTube

Laxmi and Om also do not stock BT anymore because BT is not only videos - it is videos, notes, QB, practice ques and forum to say the least. And you will not get all of these anywhere except the BT site.

My suggestion is to buy BT either alone or in sharing if cost is a major issue.
But whether you would want to do that at this late stage (for May), is a call that needs thought. One good thing, though, is that the BT subscription is valid for one year - so it will cover Nov exam also if you take it now - in case there is any flexibility in your decision.

Yes and No !

It's difficult to give a straightforward answer, lot depends on so many factors...
FRM would help in showcasing one's ability and skills as a Risk Manager, it will not make one a consultant.
If one has a hardcore experience in RM, passing FRM is great synergy and consulting line is also a good choice.
However, consultants need not pass FRM unless they are focusing on RM.

If I haven't raised enough questions in your mind 😃 here's another one... It also depends on what kind of consulting you are referring to - Process Consulting, Strategy Consulting, Business Consulting, IT Consulting etc etc.

Firstly thanks to leolazer and all others for this immensely informative thread.

I do marketing analytics using SAS/JMP/Excel/R for statistical analysis and am pretty interested in my work (now).
Eventually I feel I want to evolve into a broad based business problem solver like a Management Consultant . My hypotheses are that attempting FRM would:
1. Expand my problem solving capabilities . I solve business problems only from the marketing perspective, it would help me appreciate risk side too.
2. Give me an edge as a candidate due to the credibility of FRM exam when I apply to a good B-school after 3 or 4 years

Please let me know your thoughts on the validity of the above hypotheses.

Thanks & Regards,

In Strategy Consulting, Business Consulting, IT Consulting for Financial Institutions etc.

You have the correct drift.

Few thoughts...

  1. Are you planning for an EMBA (PGPX - IIMA) etc?
  2. Have you had a look at courses like AFRM / Business Analytics from IIM B (Long Duration (Certificate) Programmes | Indian Institute of Management Bangalore)
  3. Have you thought about MBA in consulting?

FRM does increase your knowledge about Financial Risk Management provided you do NOT consider it as JUST an exam to pass... hope you get the point !

Credibility - definitely
Problem solving - limited
Understanding Risk - definitely
Edge - for securing MBA... yes, in career... depends on other factors also

Adding to what Leolazer said, do check if your firm / job title combination falls in any of the mentioned ones in the list as per GARP:

GARP - Qualifying Job Titles for FRM Certification

Otherwise, move to a different function in your organization to take up one of the roles mentioned and then work towards your FRM and MBA.

Guys,
I've been preparing for FRM 2012 from 2011 Schweser notes. Just wanted to know how different are 2012 notes from 2011. The portion hasn't changed substantially from previous year has it?

Generally you can expect approx 25% changes - This time there are some 4-5 new readings in Mkt Risk and in Op Risk each and lots new in Current Issues.

For details refer here

Thanks Leolazer & Maneet for the pointers
I get the point (to look at the exam holistically with respect to learning too apart from credibility) :)

@LeoLazer, yup I am indeed looking at exec MBAs/2 yr MBAs in India/Abroad (profile based selection process) 3 to 4 years from now.

I did look into the long distance programs of IIMs but from what I gathered around from industry seniors (they seem to offer not much of learning in the industry context-decent to have on resumes-still quite costly)-with all due respect to the stakeholders of these courses

I did not understand what you pointed to by "MBA in Consulting"?

I do not refer to the (long) distance programs - rather the super specialization programs that are conducted for laterals generally on weekends spread over a period of time.

I believe you had expressed interest in Consulting - hence the idea that you can also opt for a MBA with specialization in "Consulting". Some MBA schools have started offering this stream now.

Thanks Leolazer & Maneet for the pointers
