I prepared from Schweser notes(complete) and Bionic videos.

I started preparing from August. Simultaneously I had to attend my MBA classes.

You said, "Now confused whether to give FRM level II in may or not as I have CFA level II in june. Most probably I will give, at least want to complete FRM simultaneously with MBA as I am in flow."

Final choice has to be made by you, that too pretty soon. But it may be easy (and less regrets later, specially if anything goes wrong later due to any reason whatsoever) if you consider the following:

1. Have you already enrolled for CFA L2 (which is for me, when studying like you, was substantial amount)? If yes, CFAI has no provision of any refund or transfer of fees to next chance even in case of withdrawal so irrespective of consequences it is better to sit for it instead of 'donating' the money to CFAI. If not enrolled decide after considering the following further.

2. Since you have done pretty well in FRM L1 (certainly quite good, better than many, considering your other loads) the Level 2 will not be much of a hurdle with investment of similar amount of time and effort under same study & practising strategy as L1 , specially because in the L@ curriculum the 'current issues' part is comparatively very easy , as the coverage is 90% (to 100%) from the prescribed 11 or 12 case studies in the GARP readings (you can see them now as they are freely downloadable from the GARP digital library even before enrolling for L2!) and except for the 'operations' sections other sections you should be able to master pretty fast with same effort as L1.

3. Though CFA L2 by itself (despite being a part qualification only) is no less achievment for investment banking roles and jobs in terms of value and recognition by employers still once you complete the study & testing part of 'the' professional qualification in risk management (if you have the two years recognisable exp as required for the certification then only it is full FRM) it will be more of an asset in your career selection and campus interview (for obvious reasons) than the other. Lots depend on what sort of campus recruiters visit your institution as recruiters from 'investment' bank/organisation is more easy to come by than specialised 'RM" recruiters as of today (speaking in Indian context) except may be some like HSBC, CITI etc. But then risk-management qualified candidates are also much more difficult to come by in campuses. That is why, being 'FRM holder' by clearing FRM L2 (Certified FRM if you have the experience too) in my opinion will fetch better rewards in RM related career right from credit risk analyst to front-office & specialised risk management/advisory/research role in terms of prospects and returns both in short term and log term perspective. So, doing the FRM L2 now in May has special attraction for you.

4. You have done CFA L1 and obviously know (by now may have seen too) that the CFA L2 curriculum is similar to L1 though much wider and more application oriented. General feedback is that with good L1 foundation preparing and clearing L2 requires some effort but is not undoable, specially if one does whole time revision in the 2 weeks gap that one gets between FRM L2 and CFA L2 dates of exam.

5. Many believe that the 'risk' is worth taking (subject to affordability) giving full priority to FRM L2 and minimal (but not nil) time to CFA L2 preparation till you have done the FRM2. In practical terms it means about 20 hrs per week to FRM2 and 10 hrs per week to CFA 2 till April end and then full 30 hrs per week to FRM2 till the FRM2 exam and thereafter same amount to CFA2 till the cFA2 exam. Of course these should not be at the cost of your MBA, which in any case is your top priority. Honestly speaking, if you can put your nose to the grinding stone literally in this manner - you may even go for both otherwise you may have to chose only one. In former case, worst case scenario for you should be dong MBA plus FRM2 and a reasonable effort for clearing CFA2, even if you miss to clear the CFA2 (though you don't aim for it!!).

6. But before you take your final call I would strongly suggest you see and go through the Level 2 curriculum books of GARP and CFAI (even if you see the 2011 versions which are freely available to download on net it will be OK). This may require you to spend about 4/5 days to get a first hand feeling of the coverages and how you feel about either /both but it may be the best strategy for you to finally decide with no scope of regrets later.

In any case come out of your confusion and decide once for all what you intend to do without wasting any more time and then stick to it. Best of luck.

@mygos: Thanks for your reply. Your suggestions are very helpful as usual.

I have registered for CFA L2, so I will have to give CFA L2 exam. For my placements most companies will be coming in the month of Jan and if god bless me I will be placed in Jan itself.

As far as FRM degree is concerned, since I am a fresher I dont have 2 years related work-ex. So I will just have both levels cleared in my resume.

Since my MBA will get over by 15th March and I will be free after that so I could get time for preparation. I am planning to register for FRM L2 2012 May exam, and if I am not able to cover the syllabus or if I am not comfortable, I will get it postponed to Nov 2012 exam. I think we can postpone FRM L2 exam as we can postpone FRM L1 exam.

Rest is my hard work which will decide my faith.

Waiting for your suggestions.

Cleared Level 2

All the best to everyone.

Happy to know your placement will be over in January and I am confident with CFA L1 & FRM L1 in your cv alongwith 'registered candidate for CFA & FRM Level2 in May /June 2012' under Professional Certification/Qualification column you stand much better chance of a good and expected offer than it would be otherwise. In the campus placement challenge in the current market scenario one really needs to stand out among the cohort he/she happens to be - being a fresher with no experience these entries in your cv will certainly go a long way to lessen the negative impact of that. Since you will be preparing for both while appearing for seemingly never-ending cycles of GD/PI by the campus recruiters, you will also be better prepared to answer most of the PI questions with more confidence without needing to specially prepare for it. Due to all these factors your decision to prepare and appear in both level 2's is the best you could make.

If you are free after mid-March and is determined to clear both by devoting maximum hours for both it is highly likely that you would go through both. Only thing is that you need to have a day to day study plan ready immediately (if not done) for both these as well as the MBA (for which I think you may be involved mainly in the 'Project' + viva and some study for the semester exam during this period) and stick to it. Obviously, it needs to be full time preparation for L2's after March with focus on practice tests and mocks and revising the weaker sections and gaps from Schewser and Curriculum readings for FRM2 and Schewser with EOC questions from CFAI material for CFA2, then certainly you won't need to postpone anything for November. 2 months full time preparation (with preliminary study of around 15 hours weekly input for the months prior to it) with about 15 days more for CFA2 is more than enough for someone with the performance you had in L1. Be sure to take timely rest intervals with healthy food during this period so that you don't feel exhausted (or burn out) before the D-day. Wishing you all the best.

Hi, can you pm me softcopy materials of FRM Level 2 as I am not able to find any material for L2 online and schweser 2012 notes will be available after 2-3 weeks. Its urgent.

I have the following Schweser material 2011 (hard copy) for FRM L2 with me

- Market Risk
- Risk Mgmt and Invstt Mgmt
- Practice Exams

Anyone willing to take them in person in Bangalore from my place is most welcome to come and collect them.
I do not require any payment.

niks2206,

Thanks.

Taking this to the forum for the benefit of others,

CFA L2 and FRM L2 address totally different areas. So be prepared to have a roller coaster ride in case you decide to appear for both. Since you have already cleared CFA L1 and FRM L1, you have demonstrated your dedication and understanding of Finance. However, both address different aspects... In FRM L2 you will not have many aspects of valuation or products like in CFA.

I would suggest you check on the detailed FRM AIMs and compare it with the CFA syllabus before making a decision.

I did not rely too much on Schweser or Handbook for L2. I rather referred to some other books and real life experience. I did not find the paper very tough, although it did challenge my practical and logical thought process.

I'll try to write a detailed mail later and send some material also.

Congrats on clearing L2. I cleared L1. Actually I wanted to know as to how much time did you devote in studying for L2, which materials did you go through and what is the difficulty level. I have CFA L2 exam this June and I am also planning to give FRM L2 exam in May, so is it possible to give both the exams. If you have any L2 softcopy material can you mail it to me. My id is ...

Thanks

Where can I get old FRM books?

I am from mumbai.. ANy body interested in forming group......

Hi folks,

I am Deepak, from Mumbai.
I am interested in appearing for FRM exam, but not in May. I went to GARP website and it seemed that I can register now as a new student and later on register for exam in Nov.

Can anyone confirm the same?
Also, if I register now then I will only have to pay 300, right? and not the full 650.

and congratulation to those who already cleared level I/II of FRM and best of luck for those who are planning to appear in May.
