Financial Risk Manager [FRM] by GARP

Hi Anil,
im planning to appear for 2009. could you pls answer this -
For core readings -do we get a copy(compiling only the required chapters from all books) from Laxmi xerox or do we need to buy all the books mentioned and study the particular chapters seperately ?? if we hav to buy all books its pretty expensive right? how did you collect your materials?

i have a MBA(fin) but does not have math background.So i planning to start with FRM handbook -supplementing each of its chapters with material from schwesers or bionic turtles and Hull.. Do you think its a good strategy for clearing FRM?

Thanks,
Srini

I am also appearing for FRM 2009. what's Laxmi xerox? Is it some publisher i can get in delhi too?

oops.... some fault in server led posting of one message thrice

I am an Engineering graduate in Biotechnology and have taken admission in MBA. I have no work -experience.:banghead:
I have no idea whatsoever of finance and economics Initially wanted to appear for CFA but its a long drawn commitment and exams are not held here.I am interested in appearing for FRM level 1 in May 2010. And i want to start my preparations now as i need a lot of time to get initiated..

Fortunately I got a lot of books from college library and seniors which contains a substantial amount of the core readings for level 1:cheers:...

1. Financial management and analysis by Fabozzi(suggested by a senior as an introduction to finance)

2. Mathematical Statistics and Probability by Saxena and Gupta . Senior said to do this before touching Gujarati as i have no background in mathematics. Last time mathematics done by me was in my first year in 2005

3. Bruce Tuckman 2nd ed.

4. Hull 6th ed.

5. Value at risk 2nd ed.

6. commodity Derivatives by Schofield.

7.Derivative markets by Robert mc Donald

8.portfolio theory and performance analysis by noel amenc

9 Derivatives Markets, Valuation, and Risk Management by robert e whaley

10. Credit Risk Measurement by Lind allen and anthony saunders.

11. handbook of fixed income derivatives by fabozzi

I also have schweser 2009 notes.

Though a few of the above books are not in core readings but i tallied their contents vis-a-vis the garp 2009 study guide and found that most topics have been covered, except credit risk management, modeling, measurement etc.

Do you think that i have enough materials and i can make the cut for level1 this novemeber only instead waiting till next year?? I am totally free in june and july (my MBA begins in august) and can estimatedly devote around 2 hours daily august onwards.
Do you think this much of time will be enough to finish and revise level 1 or should i stick to my original plan of appearing next year, given i am a complete novice in this area?

A quick reply will be appreciated

from where did u get scheswer 2009 notes buddy.. I heard they will be out only by July.????..Anyways wont be able to advice u too much on this as I have still not started my preparation..I ll ask a few people and let u know...

@bitan

Firstly , I feel you have chosen the right set of books that are best in the finance literature , however try not to get bogged down by the chapters in the textbook , mainly becasue each author uses different notations and different methodology.
Mind you these text books are good if you have a guide/prof to help you or these texts are being used in the class , certainly it will give a great deal of info on the subjects and solidyfy your concepts , but refrain from using multiple textbooks for same topics for example you have mentioned above that you are referring handbook of fixed income derivatives by fabozzi and also Bruce Tuckman 2nd ed .

IMO ..Fabozzi(Handbook) is the bible for fixed income and the explainations are very lucid ..whereas Bruce Tuckman uses different(complex) mathematial notations and I found his explanations a bit abstruse .

Secondly, these text books are good for understanding the subject ,but definately would not give you any idea of the questions you may be tested in the exam .so drill down questions from previous q papers or schweser practice exams

Hull is a great reference book for Derivatives,I feel there is no need to read derivatives from multiple texts.Also I suggest you to answer the end of chapter questions given in Hull and the assignment questions in excel spreadsheet ,which would give you a great deal of understanding

If I were you I would read the relevant readings from the above mentioned textbooks and then polish it off by using Schweser + Jorion (FRM Handbook 5th ed)

@prasadhegde

Is there much difference between 4th and 5th edition of Jorion (FRM handbook) ???

Dude ... 5 yrs of op exp is enough to give you a head start ..... if you have done Hull well enough ... then just go ahead with Jorion .... it has everything you need for clearing the examination ... and I would suggest a single sitting as its not too difficult

Jorion Ed. 5 is out on the blogs, but unfortunately those are paid sites, so have some patience till the cool stuff becomes free for all.

Hi Apoorv ... can you please PM me the contact details for sourcing the photocopies in Delhi

Thanks

@vjrocks

I havent seen 5th edition ,but I did go through some of the reviews and tried to compare 4th edition(which I have) and 5th edition (from wiley website) I didnt find any major differences ,but some readers opined that 4th edition had too many mistakes in the practice questions etc so I feel those errors have been taken care of in the 5th edition ,anyway I would buy 5th edition mainly becoz thats the one prescribed by GARP

can one register now?

Hey guyz i am doin my MBA in Finance and wud be appearing for Cfa level 1 on june 7(day after tomorrow) :)......I just want to knw should i appear for frm in nov...full course....does FRM complement CFA or its into a different domain of finance..are 4 months enough to finish the portion and to do well in the exam?

@vikrantrm

I think you can take up FRM , yes CFA L1 will help to a great extent because subjects like quant ,derivatives and fixed income basics are grilled in L1 which are very much essential in FRM even though FRM is much advanced L1 will help w.r.t basics
If you carry the CFA L1 discipline for FRM prep also I think its quite achievable

hi puys,
same here.. i've also appeared for CFA Level 1 on june 7... and now planning for FRM Full Exam in Nov'09..
Can anyone please tell me which notes chould i refer to.. and what are these GARP Readings and what is the '5th edition' (which book we are talking about here)
if anyone has any other suggestions regarding study plans, study hours etc etc then please share it..
as time is the one thing which ppl like me(cfa L1 candidates) don't have right now....

Cheers!!!

HI PUYS,
