Hi BaBu,
Thanks for the prompt reply. The end objective of taking up one of these courses is to build a long term career for myself, as an equity analyst, a world class equity analyst, in the big huge world of Dalal Street.
I keep a good track of markets. Have been an investor for quite many years now. Can read and understand P&L; statements and balance sheets with quite ease.
Which one to go for?????????
Jack
Hi Jack,
If you carefully study CFA and Ms finance prospectus, you will be able to spot the differences in CFA and Ms finance and the cost implications.
Both are well recognised in the industry and classes will help specially in finance subjects which you have not studied in the graduation.
Which course to persue depends on your objectives- Example: My friend is working in an IT company for a global finance client, he is persuing CFA to get better finance knowledge and be a functional consultant.

Ms finance will be better as it covers everything under finance and there is nothing like a master in finance.

Perhaps, this is the reason why ICFAI relaxed the criteria for CFA as most of the MS Finance graduates are recruited in Equity segment, the syllabus of which is covered in alpha - delta itself. Thus there was no point in studying so much for getting a job in equity segment. Now with the relaxed criteria both CFA and CFA (AIMR) are at par. With the earlier syllabus the efforts were just wasted.
I agree with Ketan on this one. To kickstart career CFA is more then enough.
In case if some one joins Ms finance, then one should complete CFA first, start working/change jobs and then complete remaining groups along with full time job.

Here is my practical suggestion:
1) Since you will be a cost and management accountant by the end of this year, you can get openings in the same related field. Genpact in Kolkatta will hire you as a business analyst instantly doing cost budgeting and variance analysis.
2) It is impossible to get an opening in investment research without CFA, MBA finance.
3) You should start working after ICWA and complete your CFA side by side. Once CFA gets over, then you can try for investment management/research.

Babu,
Is Futures/Options/Swaps etc. adequately covered in alpha - delta. In delta curriculum thay have mentioned about Futures/Options/Swaps but since I am not able to access the textbooks I have no idea.
Can you please throw some light on it.
I think Debt/Equity/Index Futures/Options/Swaps etc are very important for Investment Management.
It should not happen that a CFA is working in Equity Segment and he doesnot have expertise in Debt/Equity/Index Futures/Options/Swaps.
Yup everything is covered. All kind of financial valuation models is covered in delta.

Well these topics are well covered under FRM that is now in kappa and without FRM i think a CFA is uncomplete. Swap is not covvred in Delta. and beside it i think international finance is also a subject which is very interesting and a CFA should know it well that how currency behave in international market. only Project managment and investment banking should be waived for CFA.. though i again fell that INvestment banking is also a very vital subject. but more and less FRM+international finance these are must to become a proper CFA. A delta CFA should Read these subjects and must have knowldge of VAR/Swap/forex..

Hello aish_stars. i think u should join MS(Finance) if you are not a CA/ICWA as it it gives an extensive insight into the various areas of finance..having said so ur choice of course should also be in keeping wit ur interests and career goals..CFA is meant for ppl interested in having a career in the investment industry..whereas MS(Finance) is meant those who want to keep their options open as to which particular sector they wish to join in the finance industry..so the curriculum in it is much broader compared to CFA..by the way u'll be admitted into the council of CFAs even after passing MS(Finance)..I hope this piece clears ur doubt and helps u in making a suitable choice.

Hi everyone ,me a qualified MS(finance) from ICFAI Hyderabad, a fresher and consequently want to ask some very very important basic and fundamental practical questions:
1.While calcuating cost of equity for indian entities , what do we use as expected return on market and wat is it currently.
2. Where can we find the beta coefficients for individual Indian stocks ,except from the paid up softwares..anything online.
3.While valuaing or finding the target price of the equity, when gowth rate is higher then required return(R-G), discounted valuation models cannot be used..so what it the another technique to value the stock.
4.Lastly, while calculating the WACC , the pre tax cost of debt is yield on maturity on long term debt ,right? and in which section of annual report of the company, do you find it.
Let me know
Thanks
Would someone please point out the main(and notable) differences between CFA & MBA(Finance) ?
