Little long post alert to those who are interested, the topic being Mock Percentiles vs Main Percentile.
I think the mock percentiles vs main percentile difference post must be put on public forums like Quora. Especially when coaching centers reveal percentiles and give you a rough estimate of how this reflects in the main CAT in their videos. CL goes one step further predicting your main CAT percentile based on previous data and their "AI" systems and they were always around your mock+5 percentile range.
I personally found AIMCATs a little assuring since I could see the entire 20000 odd scores range. You could clearly see how some additional questions or 5-15 marks could put you in top brackets.
In my case, I was heavily demotivated and paranoid before my first attempt of CAT, since I never crossed 90 percentile, with poor strategies, I would also lie in 60s-70s sometimes based on DILR. Post my first attempt in CAT (2019), in which I scored 97 percentile, I realized my all-India standing and knew I could have a shot at top B-Schools.
I'd personally say casual estimates by coaching institutes/experts based on your mock scores could be very far from reality. And as aspirants, we tend to give a lot of weight to these poorly formed advices. I also think getting too comfortable or acquainted too much with mocks might also backfire (false sense of security), especially in DILR since this is a section that demands pure instantaneous thinking solving sets with random formats.
Overall to conclude, my personal opinion post couple of attempts of CAT is an average of 80-90 percentile in all-India mocks is a really promising scenario which one can convert to 99+ percentile in main CAT. Also, one must heavily and repeatedly work on execution (post learning) as that's what the main CAT result would be about.

Just saw a post about how mock scores can be really low when compared to the actual exam. With SIMCAT 1 starting soon, I know the jittery ride of mock season is about to start for many. Thought I would share my mock scores for the AIMCATs last year, just to reiterate that ups and downs are a given for every mock season. All the best peeps! AIMCAT Score Percentile 2120 : 130 98.46% 2119 : 84 89.40% 2118 : 130 99.22% 2116 : 95 87.08% 2114 : 135 98.54% 2112 : 102 91.91% 2110 : 119 95.97% 2109 : 96 96.44% 2107 : 86 97.32% 2106 : 87 95.80% 2105 : 88 96.83% 2104 : 71 85.9% 2103 : 69 86% 2102 : 102 93% 2101 : 77 83% Actual CAT : 99.6%ile. I didn't give my IIM K Finance interview. Would it have any effect on my pgp result of iim k. I know this is illogical but what if they are in mood of revenge 😅
I've been pondering about this for quite some time now and now even more so after watching a video of Inside-IIM wherein, a bunch of IIM C students talk about their journey.
Almost, all the students mentioned that getting 6 hours of sleep is a luxury at least in the first few months. If, I were to be optimistic, I will consider that it ain't a luxury but 6 hours would be an average number of sleep that students get.
My point is that, personally I need 7-8 hours of sleep everyday, otherwie either I have to compensate it the next day or I get severe headache. Is there a way out that I can adjust my sleep cycle before joining a B-school or do, I've to compromise on one the buckets (Academics, Placements, Extra-curricular, Fun)
